Music that was too good for the game it was in.

Recommended Posts

So we all know that Mario Galaxy and F-Zero have great music. Or that the underwater music in Donkey Kong Country is beautiful. Great games and great music go hand in hand, and it's legitimately difficult to think of a classic game that doesn't have a pretty great soundtrack.

But what about those moments of musical beauty in an otherwise bad/passable game.

Here's my offering.

This music makes me unable to dislike that game as much as everyone else seems to.

Here's one I remember loving when I was a kid despite the game being pretty mediocre at best (later found out the tune was originally a c64 one)

Any other contenders?

There's only one contender for me:

I wouldn't normally even like music like this but there's something about it.

My brother and I used to put the game on just to dance around the room like idiots. We were in our thirties at the time.

Haha, that song is amazing. This is the type of classic music you just don't get to hear in the other "favourite music" threads.

I used to navigate to the demo of Age of Booty on my brother's ps3 to hear this tune.

We never actually played the game though :)

I would say on the other hand that that music is exactly the same quality as the game.

Finally someone else who thinks Buck Bumble is the best game on the N64! I can finally stop being ashamed.

I enjoyed Axiom Verge but the music was far and away the best thing about it. I doubt I'd have seen it through to the end without it.

Ah man, it's one of my favourite games.

That guy who did the incredible Nier Automata soundtrack also scored Drakengard 3 which as a game was a load of poo, so that:

At the risk of being harsh, Nier Gestalt / Replicant also qualify... ;)

Now and then I bring up the game Mind Zero - a ropey Vita knock-off of PS1-era Persona that had some good ideas in the gameplay but still had so much jank. Some of the boss encounter music kicked all the ass though -

Speaking of iffy Vita games, there were some very atmospheric tunes in Freedom Wars

Also... it wasn't Naganuma, but damnit they tried!

(E: oi @RubberJohnny Dustforce doesn't belong here! :P )

The ultimate chip tune answer.

Tim Follin is the composer. Just incredibly music, for pictionary.

Looked up his name and it seems he's the man responsible for my favourite bit of NES music, the title screen/main theme from Solstice, so yeah, makes sense that he could make even Pictionary sound good.

Soukaigi has an absolutely superb soundtrack from Hiroki Kikuta of Secret of Mana fame - every track on the OST a winner, but the game is pure bobbins.

If I remember correctly it was entirely recorded live with an orchestra.

Splatterhouse remake was an OK game, but not many people know the game was scored by Howard Drossin of Sonic 3 / Comix Zone fame and it's superb. It has touches of 90's grunge, industrial metal and straight up shredding years before Mick Gordon got universal praise for new Doom. Helped that Doom was a much better game
