The Best Game Trailers

Recommended Posts

If a trailer's job is to get people discussing and debating to get the game's name out there, then there can't be many that led to more words of argument than this...

Which reminds me: I still haven't got round to watching DF Retro's retrospective on E3 2005:

Say what you like about the final game, but in terms of implications and potential, "Nier New Project" (later to become Automata) is up there:

For Platinum fans who had missed the original, this was trailer an interesting curio... but for players of Gestalt / Replicant this reveal was mindblowing. The 2010 game had some brilliant writing, music, and world-building, but the gameplay holding it together was littered with rough edges, and it was a proper 6/10 experience that had "missed potential" plastered all over it. The original game wasn't unplayable but it had enough jank to disappoint after the storytelling, characterisation and score had put in so much work. We wondered: if there was a studio who specialised in polished gameplay experiences, a new Nier could be pretty special... and that's why the setup of this trailer was so exciting.

Front-loading the video with the words "Developed by PlatinumGames" - perhaps one of the leading studios for "polished gameplay experiences" - and credits for the producer/musician/director of Nier was such a smart move; Gestalt / Replicant fans such as myself were watching the video thinking "NO... THEY WOULDN'T...SURELY..." - and the letters ticking over to spell Nier was the best way to end it.

The BotW and Wind Waker trailers are both incredible. The former especially.

The Mario Odyssey Jump Superstar thingy is so good as well. My little girl regularly asks me to put it on when I'm using the computer.

This is fantastic as well:

Guy who did it started out doing fan trailers for Naughty Dog games and such, can't find him on phone now, but his stuff is excellent.

Was just looking at some upcoming stuff and thought this trailer for The Sinking City was impressive. Doesn't tell you shit about the game. Except that it's going to mess with your head Cthulhu style:

Easy...

Dead Island

Stunning trailer for a distinctly meh game... such beautiful music too

For me this was one of the all time worst. Yes it's a nice wee animation and an affecting clip but there was absolutely NO indication of what the game would be like. I remember everyone creaming themselves over the clip but I knew that it would likely have the square root of fuck all to do with the actual gameplay. A good game trailer should showcase the game above all else.

I just caught up with the Super Mario Maker 2 thread, and this trailer from a few months ago is a great example of showing off the sequel's new features in as densely-packed a way as possible:

This Fall of Cybertron trailer kicks all sorts of ass. I still watch it occasionally even now, years after the fact.

The game itself wasn't anything groundbreaking, but was loads of fun. Especially

Spoiler

laying down the heavy smack as Grimlock.

The style  I remember being pretty hyped for this, and recently it was in the running in my games of the decade list...

Most Fromsoftware game trailers are brilliant.

True colours of darkness:

I think the All Saints' Day trailer for the first DS is still one of my favourites though:

That moment when Ornstein falls to his knees combined with the dramatic music -emphasizing the theme of despair- really does it for me.

It's a trailer for a level, but the fact that a level deserves its own trailer surely means that it deserves inclusion:

Proper gasps of excitement when I saw this - ignoring that leaked DC prototype, this was the first new Rez content in years - and you would think it's spoilery but it only conveys a fraction of the full experience. ^_^
