Best Films of 2018

Recommended Posts

Still a few weeks to go but David Ehrlich's always well made best of video has been released. I've seen a lot of films this year, a lot, and I'm probably going with either The Verdict or Network.

Spoilers for a bunch of films -

I’ve pretty much got my top ten sorted. Just waiting to see Roma, as that’s probably the last new film I’ll watch this year.

Not going to watch the video just yet as I don't want to cloud my judgement but top 5 off the top of my head:

Isle of Dogs

Private Life

Searching

American Animals

Three Billboards

I would say American Animals is the movie of the year for me, but it made me realise what a poor year of film it's been.

This is partly my own fault because I sometimes let supposedly great movies slip me by because I'm tired or whatever from work and think that I won't appreciate them.

I still have loads from this year I want to watch, I'm way behind. But from what I've seen this is currently my top 10 (well 12 cause I couldn't crop them out)

Ones that I want to watch that I feel could make it into my top 10 based on word of mouth;

Widows

First Man

Searching

A Star is Born

Leave no Trace

American Animals

Cold War

I think might make it my mission to get those watched this month if I can soon can have a definitive list.

I think it’s been a blinding year for films - best in a long time. I’ve a few I’d like to see before the end of the year that might make my list Widows, Roma, Susperia, Vox Lux (not sure if we’re getting this in 2018) and Spiderverse.

Lolz at Mission Impossible being so high in that video list though.

Sod it. Here’s mine.

1 Phantom Thread

2 Mandy

3 Shoplifters

4 Cold War

5 Climax

6 Three Billboards

7 Mute

8 Annihilation

9 Shape Of Water

10 You Were Never Really Here

Just bubbling under

Revenge, The Night Comes For Us, Infinity War, The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs, Heredity, A Quiet Place, They Shall Not Grow Old, First Man & MI Fallout.

Yet to see

Susperia, American Animals & Roma.

It's a very good action film with some amazing stunts, a nonsense storyline and a great shift from the Cruiser - probably second best action film I've seen this year after The Night Comes for Us. But putting it higher than the likes of Cold War? Not for me Clive.

Need to watch a few more but not sure anything will top ‘Cold War’. Although of the better movies that’s prob the only one I’ve watched in the cinema so slightly unfair comparison.

Bonkers.

Anyways, Three Billboards and You Were Never Really Here were utter pish.

Agreed with you on Three Billboards. Was hugely disappointed. I thought YWNRH was very strong.

Mission Impossible was almost without merit. A couple of great action scenes wrapped around tired tropes, a non existent plot, a film without a villain, a shoehorned love interest, a truly surreally shit bomb plot, some running porn and one of the most exposition heavy scripts ever written. People who defend it should be embarrassed.

Hold The Dark is the worst film you've seen this year.

Yeah but the motorbike scene was great.

(Are you going to do your video on it that you mentioned in the film's thread?)

Ooh, thanks for reminding me. Is it available now? I definitely want to do a supercut of all the dialogue where characters explain the plot and tell us what they're about to do next

From this year only - I enjoyed Searching a great deal. Thought Fallout was good, same as The Night Comes For Us.

I was disappointed by Hold the Dark, and slightly less so by Apostle.

Great films I’ve seen this year that weren’t released this year -

Network

The Verdict

Sweet Smell of Success

The Omen

An American Werewolf in London

Rope

The Taking of Pelham 123

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Timecrimes

Sorcerer

To Live and Die in LA

Yeah you do (I'm about to name at least 2) and no it's not. You're telling me MI is worse than Open House, Jurassic World 2 or Venom? I know you've seen them and they're awful.

I've seen a lot I would rank way below MI:Fallout
