Who here doesn't care about the Switch and why?

There is a distinct lack of AAA games on the Switch IMHO... or perhaps games that appeal to me.

We are now what coming up to 2 years since release. Where is a new Mario Kart (not a WiiU port)? Mario? F-Zero? Pikmin? New franchises etc.

A new 3D Mario came out literally just last year. There's really no rush for them to put out a new Mario Kart when 8 Deluxe is the best selling Switch game thus far and continues to sell well, same as why there is no rush for a GTA6 - you don't cannibalise your existing sales so soon, which is the Mario Kart team was put on ARMS instead, which admittedly wasn't a huge hit but they tried something different. F-Zero is not commercially viable and Pikmin 4 apparently does exist somewhere within Nintendo HQ.

These kind of arguments usually boil down to 'why isn't there more Metroid, Zelda and Mario?' when we had two of them last year and Metroid is coming in the next year or two.

People are perfectly entitled to their opinion on hardware and games - the one thing that really always gets me is when people say "I don't like Nintendo games' - like that's some kind of genre and they are all the same. You wouldn't say "I don't like Sony games' or 'I don't like Capcom games', but for some reason people just pigeon-hole Nintendo. A company that produces titles ranging from Mario to Metroid, from Zelda to Mario Kart, from Pikmin to Advance Wars, from Waverace to F-Zero, from Kirby to Pokemon, from Smash Bros to Fire Emblem, from Kid Icarus to Splatoon, from Xenoblade to Mario Party.

They are one of the most diverse publishers out there, but for some reason people don't like 'Nintendo games' rather than 'I don't like Pokemon' or 'I don't like Smash Bros'. I just always find it odd.

Carry on.

Of the games you mention, I quite like Mario Kart, though playing through all of them up to Wii has put me off wanting to play another one for a while. Other than that, there's nothing there that interests me. But I have a fairly narrow range of games I play, so I'm not exactly representative of gamers.

So no. No interest in Switch. Or PS4, for that matter. Couldn't justify a gaming PC either. Bone has the exclusives (Forza) and  multi platform stuff I want. If there was something I really wanted to play on Switch, I'd get one, but that hasn't happened yet.

I don't think it's an argument really. Loads of people are happy with the Switch while others wonder what the fuck Nintendo are doing post Mario Odyssey.

I bought the Switch for Nintendo first party games and this year has been shit for them. Like, worst ever possibly, which seems nuts.

I agree with your point, but sadly they don't seem to produce Wave Race, Advance Wars or F-Zero much any more.

Agree with what you are saying but from a previous Nintendo machine owner (WiiU) Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon feel old hat and no reason to re-buy them. They could have at least revamped MK8 on the Switch to make a completely new game. Suppose many people bought GTA5 on the newer consoles despite already buying it on the last gen....so perhaps its fair point.

There just doesn't seem to be the sheer variety of Nintendo content that the GameCube offered in its first couple of years. Again maybe that the games don't appeal to me but nothing is enticing me back to the switch to play.... Maybe I should just sell it and quit complaining... :)

I don't get the criticism over Wii U ports. If you don't want them don't buy them, they're clearly aimed at people who didn't own that system, which is most people.

Right, but in the absence of anything else that appeals for these people to buy, surely you can empathise with the frustration?

It seems strange you're so determined to tell people how they feel about something is...

I can't empathise with something I don't agree with.

It's been a while - probably the N64 - since much of Nintendo's output really appealed to me. Back then it made a real difference that the Marios and Zeldas were supported by Star Fox, Wave Race, F-Zero X, 1080. All that stuff that apparently doesn't sell anymore. But it would get me on board quicker than any Smash, Pokemon, Kirby, Yoshi etc. or even new stuff like Splatoon and Arms.

I mean, I'd be happy with a remake of F-Zero X with some tarted up graphics. That wouldn't take long or cost much to make, would it?

Not touched my Switch in ages, probably played for about 20 minutes in the last six months. I can't put my finger on whether the Switch isn't doing it for me or if I'm just off games generally. However, Nintendo could bring me back in with a proper F-Zero game.

Both. The lack of announcements for the future is doubly annoying.

Per eurogamer this is the pitiful list of games coming in 2019 with a release date.

2019:

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Nintendo, January 11th)

Onimusha (Capcom, January 15th 2019)

Trials Rising (Ubisoft, February 12th)

We. The Revolution (Polyslash, March 2019)

Pandemic (Asmodee, March 2019

Shovel Knight's Showdown + King of Cards DLC (Yacht Club Games, April 9th 2019)

The Lord of the Rings Living Card Game (Asmodee, April 2019)

Wargroove (Chucklefish Games, first quarter 2019)

When Ski Lifts Go (Curve Digital, early 2019)

TBH, all anyone will need is Wargroove.

Didn't think it was a bad game after playing the demo... just not worth ~£45 IMHO. Effectively a super cute 2D platformer. It should have been £19.99 max.

I think it’s decent for kids, but grown men shouldn’t be playing it.

my nephew loves it but I think iwata tried to make everything kirbyesq

Splatoon 2 is a legitimate full sequel though.

Agree we should have gotten more MK8 content. But it’s one of the greatest games ever made, as is BotW.

ARMS is a joy and Odyssey was solid (though not my favourite 3D Mario).

The problem has been a lack of similar level titles in Year 2. No new IP’s, no more full remasters of GC/Wii games. Just C-tier, Smash and Wii U ports.

If it weren’t for Fortnite, Switch Year 2 has been absymal for me tbh. I don’t necessarily want more Zelda, Metroid, Mario... but I want more AAA exciting games. AC, Yoshi, Kirby are snooze to me.

Where is the NSMB sequel? It’s been 6 years and we get a port!? Give us a Wario Ware, Luigi’s Mansion, MarioMaker 2, Nintendokart, F-Zero, Kid Icarus, Galaxy HD, Double Dash remastered, DS ports of Ocarina and Majora, 2D Zelda, a port of GC Warioland, Switch Sports etc etc...

I think the issue right now is that the 3DS needs to die. It’s taking up games that should be ideal for the switch. Just look at Wario ware.

Im hoping 2020 will be a breakthrough year for Nintendo.

I can see this point tbf, but then they have released Pokemon and Smash, two of the largest IPs in gaming...and Labo which was totally leftfield. A year in which both Pokemon and Smash come out is not an obvious target for 'you've not released anything big' really is it. And I say that as a person that doesn't like, and won't be buying, either of them.

Can't be bothered trawling through 6 pages of abuse, so this has probably been said already...

The Switch exists, plenty of folk love it, Nintendo are doing well off the back of it, and the gaming world would be a lot duller if it was left up to Microsoft and Sony - don't think there is much more to say.

Yeah, I negged it too, though in hindsight it probably should have been empathy as I genuinely feel sorry for those who have forgotten what it's like to have fun

Amen. :)  Would never want to see the gaming world without a Nintendo machine around. I've bought every console they have made all have been enjoyable for various reasons.

Having a tough time with the switch at the moment in finding content that interests me... but I would never have wanted to miss out on SM: Odyssey.

Think the switch design is a stroke of genius - even if I don't use it much undocked the option is there. Its a bit compromised because of it but still well designed.

3DS can't die (or rather, the 2DS now), it's their budget option. Switch is still too damn dear to buy for smaller kids, I think. It'll need to be cheaper before they can converge on that as a single platform.

You say that, but the consumer ultimately decides the fate of any hardware, and the consumer is apparently saying talk of the death of the 3DS may not be premature, the volumes it is shifting are starting to become a bit on the low side so it may only have a few years left of relevance anyway, be interesting to see how they propose to plug the low price kid friendly gap if the 3DS continues to decline at its current pace.

180+ responses. Good. Goooood.

I see my thread has gone...

Spoiler

It's great to see the forum is not in fact 95% Nintendo, as much as the front page of general discussion tended to lead me to think, even during the Wii U years.

I have three Wii U's, do i win a prize?

(have just started 3d World, will play on the Switch in 2022 probably. Too many games - you don't hear that often).

Kirby fucking rocks on Switch, I've never played it single player mind, but every Saturday me and my daughter play it. We've completed it about 5 times!

The somewhat defensive/aggressive tone of some of those coming out in support of the Switch is a bit weird given the topic. I think we all know it’s selling really well and lots of people seem to be enjoying it, and that few bought the Wii U (I’m really glad to be one of those few!) These issues are mostly irrelevant to demographic on this forum, no? All I was mostly seeing before that was folk explaining why it doesn’t personally interest them - often in the most consolatory terms!
