I admit I am surprised the Switch has been as popular as it has been, fair play to them for flogging that horse. Do you not feel the wheels are starting to come off though? I mean, the next big release is NSMBU FFS, does that not feel like they are coasting?

Surely the next big release is Smash Brothers?

Actually the next big release is Smash Bros this week, I've heard it's quite popular along with that other little game they recently put out, Pokemon.

Anyway this is all besides the point, Dragon Quest Builders 2 is out this month*

True, mentally I had that as out already as I keep seeing the bundles popping up. And give them their due, that does seem to be a proper 'new' version, and not the Wii U one over again.

The lack of games wouldn't be so much of an issue if there were more big AAA Nintendo titles or similar. I loved the Wii U and the ten or so great games it had were kind of enough for I wanted it for. On Switch I have 4 of those, three of which were on Wii U, the other is overrated and then I also have Puyo Puyo which is good but not exactly in that class of system title.

There is still nothing else. Of course that's just my opinion based on my situation and I can see that for those who play on the go or want to have those indie games and don't have other better/cheaper means it's great. I can see why it's doing well. I just probably shouldn't have got one. The reason I did is because my Wii U was a perfect compliment to other systems in a way this isn't.

I think the other problem is the lack of power. While this shouldn't matter in the majority of cases, it does mean the system is always a kind of complimentary one as opposed to primary. If you're really into games, it's probably not going to be the only machine you own, and if it's not you run into the same issues I have with it in that there are other better/cheaper ways to get the majority of titles. With the Wii U it wasn't so much of an issue as for one, the other systems weren't as powerful as they are now and it had a more unique, albeit very small, line up. I'm yet to see much difference in power between the Switch and Wii U.

I also have an Xbox One X and it's great, but I still prefer the Switch. Power isn't everything, it's what you do with what you have that counts.

Also lack of AAA games, I would have thought Pokemon and Smash Bros were the very definition of them.

Perhaps, it’s still missing shoulder buttons, but Switch wouldn’t even be able to run the destruction physics in Siege with it’s current hardware.

Switch is missing shoulder buttons? People bemoan the lack of power on Switch but who would have thought Wolfenstein 2 was possible? At the end of the day though you're never going to get the same level of power from a portable device as a dedicated home console, there have to be some compromises, and if Nintendo had gone down that route I doubt Switch would have been as popular as it is.

Neither of those remotely appeal to me but okay, in terms of sales and stuff I suppose you're right.

I agree about the power in theory, that's why I never had a problem with the Wii U but that was also because there were games like DK and MK and other Nintendo or close to Nintendo studios making it work. I have both DK and MK again on Switch because they haven't made any more like that. My point is there needs to be more 'only on Switch' Nintendo type experiences to make it a unique system that overcomes its power issues so they don't matter. At the moment it's pretty much a portable Raspberry Pi or whatever with the odd Nintendo game that was probably on Wii U 3 or 4 years ago. Odyssey is still really the only unique Nintendo experience that you can't get elsewhere and stops you ever considering power issues. (and I didn't really think much of it).

Labo is unique and couldn't possibly work on any other sysyem. As for more side scrolling platformers, Kirby is brilliant and Switch only. I think portable Raspberry Pi is kind of a daft desciption, unless I can suddenly play Dark Souls on that, Xenoblade, Splatoon etc.

There is a distinct lack of AAA games on the Switch IMHO... or perhaps games that appeal to me.

We are now what coming up to 2 years since release. Where is a new Mario Kart (not a WiiU port)? Mario? F-Zero? Pikmin? New franchises etc.

Think the last Nintendo console I really enjoyed was the Gamecube... so many games came out on that.. The Wii to some extent had its fair amount of shovel ware but got more use than the Switch has up to now for me anyway.

Its almost as if Ninty have have given up other than a few select franchises and let the indies take over with the fresh ideas.

Agree Labo was great though although a fairly limited experience once you've built the models and messed around with them for a bit. What have people done with the models once they have built them BTW?.... :) Mine are cluttering up the house and I really don't want to throw them out... Part of the reason decided not to buy any more kits.

Question to those who are noting a lack of releases this year - is your issue that this is bad for Nintendo, from the point of view of keeping up momentum and excitement, or bad for you as a gamer, because you’ve played everything available which appeals to you?

Bad personally for me as an owner of the device... I think that it isn't a machine for me as plenty of people seem happy with it and the games that are getting released.

I guess if you don't own a PC or other consoles and it was your only gaming device it would be fantastic. I do and it just feels like a compromised gaming experience when I have much more capable platforms to play the same games on and cheaper too. Shame I couldn't have got Mario and tried Zelda on the PC really... :) Still Ninty got my money for it so there you go.... In retrospect what I should have done is just kept the WiiU and tried Zelda on that. Which would have left me without Mario. And I probably would have still bought it for Mario. :D

They could turn this year around pretty easily by bringing out a Hotline Miami double pack, Ridge Racers and OutRun:2006 but no they obviously don't like money and concentrate their efforts on niche crap like Super Smash Brothers.

Both. The lack of announcements for the future is doubly annoying.

Per eurogamer this is the pitiful list of games coming in 2019 with a release date.

2019:

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Nintendo, January 11th)

Onimusha (Capcom, January 15th 2019)

Trials Rising (Ubisoft, February 12th)

We. The Revolution (Polyslash, March 2019)

Pandemic (Asmodee, March 2019

Shovel Knight's Showdown + King of Cards DLC (Yacht Club Games, April 9th 2019)

The Lord of the Rings Living Card Game (Asmodee, April 2019)

Wargroove (Chucklefish Games, first quarter 2019)

When Ski Lifts Go (Curve Digital, early 2019)

If you can play Mario Cars or BOTW perfectly on the Switch screen, and you can, that means anything will work at that size.

Nah. Nintendo produced big screen games do tend to retain the magic regardless, but I find a lot of others just aren't great to play on a small screen.

That's the reverse of what I did. Bought a WiiU cheap for BOTW, and then also played MK8 to death, which left me wondering if I'd have been better shelling out for a Switch and playing them there. But now, having played them, that just leaves Odyssey.

That may be, but they were Wii U ports or lacking content.

I’m a fan of the Switch, Stan.

Kirby isn't a port and it's had new content added on a regular basis, for free, since it came out in March or whenever, not that it was short on it to begin with.

I don't get the criticism over Wii U ports. If you don't want them don't buy them, they're clearly aimed at people who didn't own that system, which is most people.

So you're just ignoring the next Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Yoshi, Doom 2 and possibly Metroid Prime 4 all of which have been announced.

Speaking as someone who owns a PS4 Pro, One X and a gaming PC, I absolutely love my Switch. I wouldn't have bought it if I had to pick one console and nothing else, although I think I would probably be quite happy with that, but as it is it fills a role in my gaming life that nothing else can match. It's the first time a handheld console provides a functionally uncompromised way to play home console style games, and the ability to seamlessly play the same games on the TV is a bonus.
