Who here doesn't care about the Switch and why?

I have a switch and  kind of regret buying it a bit. Since finishing SM:Odyssey hardly touched it. Problem for me  is any game that does come out that I'm interested in (indie titles) - get released on another platform that I have where it performs better, IMHO has a better controller and is cheaper. Not really fussed about it being portable but I can see why the converged portable and home consoles. Rather have a proper home console with a full size controller though supplied as standard.

For me its lacking compelling Nintendo exclusive content beyond Mario. Never really got on with the new Zelda and played MK8 and Splatoon on the WiiU.

I already have controllers that are compatible and a back catalogue of 300 games for it. All the games I'm playing are free or already owned.

Switch £280

Pro Controller £60

4 games = £150

= Price of my laptop.

You can get a Switch at the moment for £260 with free Mario Cars, multiplayer out of the box and you don't need a pro controller.

Half the price of your laptop ;)

Mine's mothballed at the moment, barring the occasional bout of Hyrule Warriors. I"m keeping it for Shin Megami Tensei V which I know is way off, but it would be a system seller to me had I not already got one so there's no point getting rid. Even though it's a decent size as far as handhelds go it's still too small for me to comfortably play most games, so it's basically a home console and if I'm buying digital games I'm going to stick with long-standing account-based storefronts like Steam and PSN.

I fully expect to hammer Phantasy Star soon, so there's that too.

I don’t understand your comparisons.

You don’t need a Pro controller - I have one, and much prefer the joycons, so that equals = £0

You can’t play Mario Cars, Mario Odyssey or BOTW on your laptop as far as I’m aware - so really, what’s the point anyway? This is unassailable logic.

I don’t know how games are free? But certainly if you bought a machine to play games you already own, then the Switch was certainly going to disappoint you, unless you’d already been buying games for a Switch you didn’t own for some reason.

Nothing you’ve said really convinces that a laptop can offer a better portable gaming experience than the Switch.

A laptop can send emails too though I guess! And do spreadsheets, so that might be fun also.

Bought one at launch with Zelda. I really liked BOTW but didn't love it and still have a dungeon plus Ganon to do. Mario Odyssey was amazing and I loved every minute of it. I've not touched my Switch since that although I'll be dusting it off for Metroid whenever that shows up.

This year has been pretty shit from a first party perspective. I've only bought Donkey Kong and Captain Toad this year, both of which were Wii U ports. I didn't own a Wii U so they were still new to me, but I didn't really expect them to be all that was available in the second year of the console's life. Also they were both 6-7/10 games at best. Pokemon will probably be my Christmas game and I'm getting Smash so at least it's a strong end to the year, and next year looks much better.

I think this year's been great, Labo alone is amazing and there's three different kits for that already.

But the game I've enjoyed the most is Dark Souls, a game people have desired for years in portable format yet there it is and all you hear is ports, ports, ports.

I should stop reading this thread. It’s giving me buyers remorse and I haven’t even bought a switch yet.

Speaking from a personal perspective, it’s easily the best gaming machine I’ve ever owned. The idea of a console being limited to being plugged into the telly strikes me as absurd now.

But I lost interest in video gaming on consoles after the 360, so I’m probably not representative of most here.

You are just being purposely obtuse. I wanted a portable gaming device so had a decision to make. I strongly considered a Switch but knew that if I picked one up to play the small handful of games I wanted to, I would need to purchase them and once they were done I would be scratching my ballsack. If I bought a laptop I would have immediate access to games I already owned or that were available FTP or through Xbox game pass so there would be absolutely no extra costs. I went with the latter.

I don't dislike Nintendo and I certainly do not dislike their games, I just think that for me personally there are much better long term options in terms of value and content.

I understand, but I just thought your original comparison was silly, sorry.

No I think you are representative. The Switch is hugely successful and with good reason; it occupies a unique space in the gaming landscape that it's competitors can't or don't compete with.

I don't own one, and probably never will. The PSP and Vita already tried the 'full fat console games on a handheld' approach and it turned out to be not much of a selling point. I want different things from my portable titles.

Also I've been getting increasingly irritated by the way the existence of a Switch version appears to determine if a game is worth having or not, in this community at least.

Haha, I hear that. Same game you got for free 3 years ago on PS+ (probably PS4 and Vita crossplay too) and never played? Now it's on Switch for £19.99 we're all over it #PerfectForSwitch

That's my only real gripe with it though, the Switch tax (and the fact they seem to be coasting on Wii U do-overs). It does have a lot of lovely games, and is a very nice little machine.

I don’t want Sony or MS to compete with it though - I want them to continue producing their types of games and pursuing VR etc. The games I play on PS4 I wouldn’t or couldn’t play on a tiny portable screen.

Good for you, 20+ million Switch owners want something else though, even if it's just an addition to what the others offer. And here's the thing you don't have to play Switch on a 'tiny portable screen' either.

Nothing on there appeals to me and I'm 44... I play the odd game of PUBG on the PC and that's about it... I've now got better things to do with my life other than play games all day, such as DIY, Housework, Look after the kids, go out with the kids, work, drive the kids around, watch a bit of TV, try and do some photography, do some skateboarding, go out with my mates once every 4 months....

If you can play Mario Cars or BOTW perfectly on the Switch screen, and you can, that means anything will work at that size.

Zok a lot of people here are quite old now and have poor eyesight, why do you think they're all buying these massive tellies?

Mario Kart is as much a symptom of the malaise as a plus point for Switch, I feel. MK7 on 3DS isn't that different, and MK8 on the Wii U really isn't that different. There's your portable/couch portable/TV setups all covered without the need for to upgrade.

I thought the screen might be a bit small before I bought it but it works perfectly for 'console' games. Didn't even bother plugging it into the TV for the first couple of months.

The Switch tax is annoying but it's such a great way to play smaller pick up and play (mostly indie) games versus a PC (and I say this as someone who has a PC under the TV that boots into Steam so it's not like there are many hurdles). I've loved playing Axiom Verge, OSM and Into the Breach in the last few months, all available cheaper on the PC.

Split joycons without the grips are incredibly comfortable as well, an excellent evolution of the Wiimote/Nunchuck.

I had a decent time with my Switch this year with Dead Cells and Darkest Dungeon. But for me it would always have to be a secondary gaming system. Backing me up when i want to play on the couch while my wife watches tv or on the train but playing second fiddle to my PC or PlayStation because there's just not enough stuff there to keep me busy. I'd be disappointed if it was my only gaming system.

Damn, if only those 11 million customers who bought it were aware of this.

I admit I am surprised the Switch has been as popular as it has been, fair play to them for flogging that horse. Do you not feel the wheels are starting to come off though? I mean, the next big release is NSMBU FFS, does that not feel like they are coasting?
