You can see a clear split between people here who are moaning about how FINGS AIN'T HAPPENIN every 3 seconds and how ITS BORIN INNIT and another contingent who recognise what Pob neatly summarised with "this is what makes a story engaging, not action or fast pacing".

 

You could argue that there's a bit of a different strokes for different folks aspect to entertainment, but you could also argue that all of you who want stuff to HAPPEN all the time are ruining TV. You already have a million shows on Netflix where there are flashing lights, people shouting and running around and a possible appearance of The Rock every 10 minutes. This is fine as it is. Episode 3 wasn't better than Episodes 1 and 2. EPISODES ONE AND TWO DEVELOPED MORE FLESHED OUT CHARACTERS SO EPISODE THREE WAS MORE IMPACTFUL.

I think the 30-minute episode structure is working against it. From what Tony Gilroy says it sounds like it should be 4 feature-length episodes rather than 12 sitcom-length ones. If you were forced to watch Die Hard in 30 minute chunks you might well conclude that not much has happened after the first one (you would be wrong, but my point remains).

 

Ideally I'd wait for the next three episodes to be available before I watched any more but I know I won't have the willpower and I also don't want anything spoiled.

I liked it a lot, but episode 2 was oddly structured. It felt like a 30 minute sequence cut out of a film more or less at random - it wasn't really an episode of anything. I get why they did it - if they released all three episodes as a single TV movie, it'd be much less accessible. You wouldn't get people deciding to dip in so much.

 

I suspect it might have worked slightly better if they'd just had two hour long episodes rather than three 40 minute ones, but ultimately it doesn't matter given that they released all three at once.

Anyway ... somewhat OT, but based on the first episode of this Tony Gilroy could do a good live action version of Cyberpunk. The aesthetic and style in those early scenes looked like something straight out of Cyberpunk 2077.

They even refer to the two dead imperials* as "corpos". 

As much as I enjoyed the Cyberpunk anime, my enjoyment was in spite of it being an anime. I'd love a live action series.

Well I for one am loving it, two eps down and I'm excited for more. This is my kind of Star Wars, slower paced with good writing, showing the SW universe in a more realistic way.

 

I'd take one episode of this over the whole of BoBF or Obi Wan, which I disliked.

 

I'm one of those people who think Rogue One is the best SW that the Disney era has produced, I like The Mandalorian too, mind.

 

4K, HDR, Atmos and the Hue lights doing a dance, love it.

Just watched Ep 4. It’s starting to come together really nicely now. That was a really good episode, and

gave us some much more familiar surroundings. Also started to give a really good idea of the jeopardy these fledgling Rebel leaders are placing themselves in while wearing their Grand Republic/Empire faces.

This is effectively what their lives will revolve around: flitting between fantasy and sci-fi forever and ever and ever and ever....

 

Possibly with a brief sojourn into the Marvel universe I guess.

 

It's a little bit depressing, but clearly some good money to be made.

I do actually quite like how "boring" this is. It's spending a lot of time just on dialogue and world building, which I don't think we've seen in "prestige" Star Wars to quite this extent before.

But the problem is it could just as easily work as an entirely different sci-fi show. Star Wars already has a very clearly defined universe and this really doesn't feel like it's part of it somehow. Space AK-47s really don't help.

 

It feels like it should be its own thing on the Sci Fi channel or something instead, which is maybe both a good and a bad thing.

Man, I just can’t get over how utterly fantastic this is and the stupendous gulf in quality between this and all the other Star Wars output since Rogue One. Good things happen when Disney doesn’t deem something very important and genuine creativity and artistry get a chance to come through.

Your views chime pretty much exactly with mine. I have plenty of time for 'slow' tv if it's done well - and I think this is pretty good. I just don't think it has much of a place in Star Wars. I figure that the things I like in Star Wars are the space-ships, evil bad guys, heroic (yet slightly awkward) heroes and robots. All mixed together with a little bit of comedy that should never take itself completely seriously. 

 

I'm clearly out of sync, and have been for a very long time.

For a Star Wars show there's a severe lack of alien creatures in this. It's wall to wall humans, and not very interesting ones at that. It's like the makers are embarrassed that it's Star Wars. It wouldn't hurt you to throw in a big mad looking rubbery thing into the background now and then! Even the ships are boring.

I think it's fantastic - they've done a great job of building context and texture around the bones of the early rebellion, looking forward to seeing where it goes and I do hope it remains grounded – those dubious ethical choices added so much weight to the backstory that Rogue One built.

Also loving the Captain Scarlet vibes

I wasn't too hot on the proto-rebel bits but I loved all the scenes in the ISB and with Mon Monthma. I like that the show is fleshing out some details of the politics of the era.: the references to the disparate resistance cells, how the ISB chief views their mission, how Mothma operated without losing her place on the Senate etc. It still looks and sounds a league above the other SW shows. The sequence where the

disgraced corpo descends into the depths of Coruscant to visit his mum was superb. A different feel for Star Wars, but a very welcome one.

This for me is by far the best Star Wars TV series so far. I had started to lose hope and was just watching them all out of duty more than anything. I love how for once, they have expanded the universe (no desert planet yet thank fuck).

 

It does feel Star Wars to me. Just a dank street level Star Wars we haven't seen yet.

Up to Episode 4, still good.  I've been really impressed with how successfully they've transitioned his world and not return to the planet we saw in the first episodes (in this case, nobody wants to "go back to Jakku").

 

Andor's recruitment speech was also poignant given where the character ends up.

 

I've enjoyed seeing behind the scenes of Coruscant politics. 

 

Skarsgård as a broiling, but controlled, insurrectionist hiding in plain sight as a effete antiquing space ponce is a good a turn as McDiarmid when he's all "a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one" nice Palatine.  

 

Props to the portrayal of Mon Monthma as well.  Her husband needs to go out of a airlock.
