Star Wars: Andor

Up to episode 3. I don’t know what it is about the production design and story structure but it’s a space opera strong enough to make me feel OK that the Culture series isn’t going ahead?

It doesn't ever get full on action-y like the movies are. It's got some action pieces - some really striking ones - but it's not what the show's about.

I think of it much more like Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy than a Bond film. They're both spy fiction, but they each take a totally different approach.

Andor is more concerned with people in rooms talking than it is with jumping onto moving trains and fighting sinister forces of chaos. The action parts are almost treated like unfortunate consequences, rather than exciting popcorn viewing.

Really, once you've got to Episode 4, it's sort of "got going" as much as it ever does. Plot points change, and there are more action scenes (and again, they're great), but by that point the show's set out its stall, and it continues like that. The pace doesn't suddenly pick up. While events move on and things happen, if you haven't found episodes 1-4 hooking you, I don't know the rest will.

I didn't mean for it to hot up action wise. More that I'm up to like episode 7 or 8 and there's much of it that just doesn't grab me. I don't mind a slow pace if there's an interesting story being told and characters that I care about.

I think it's probably not going to grab you then. If you're not into this style of telling the story, it doesn't suddenly change. You basically know the building blocks for any plot points that will come up in future, so if you don't care about the story or characters by this point, I don't think you'll feel any different after any of the future episodes.

5 episodes in. Andor is so fucking unlikeable.

I just want to punch him in the face.

He’s not supposed to be likeable, is he? He’s just a mercenary chancer who ends up doing the right thing through the crushing weight of circumstance.

I know that. Still, he's a twat.

He's an actual character isn't he? One with twattish aspects and honourable ones. Like most people. Rather than a broad brush stroke caricature.

Took a while to get around to watching this.

It's very well acted, pretty well written, and definitely well produced. But ultimately the whole thing is soooooo dull. There is not one jot of tension in any of it.

Its a shame this team didn't tackle the obi-wan series - as that had some inherent excitement built in, but was just very poorly executed.

I used to like Brush Strokes. Whatever happened to Karl Howman?

It’s almost entirely people with different or uncertain motives feeling each other out and trying to give enough away to get what they want but not lose the house. It’s proper spy fiction stuff. You could put this on a stage and it’d still work.

How many sci fi shows have a tense sequence where a guy has let down his mum?

I rewatched this.  First time round I enjoyed the earlier episodes well enough to keep watching, but I don't think I was really into it until the seaside resort onwards.

Spoiler

The fallout from the heist is far more interesting than the heist itself, which is not a slight on that sequence.

Second time around it was the same.  Nothing wrong with that, other than you don't know you're getting that on the initial viewing.

They should have dropped the episodes in batches really. That probably goes against them wanting three months of subs out of people.
