Looks like a series about the most boring character from a film with no likeable or interesting characters. There’s so much Star Wars stuff coming to Disney+ and this looks like easily the worst. Just Star Wars places and shots of a character who is  absolutely devoid of personality.

I don’t think he was boring. He’s also the first good guy to kill another good guy.

He had more depth than most Starwars characters, rogue one gets Shitted on unfairly.

Its by the far the best Starwars movie and that included Empire.

The ending is sublime.

I only disagree with one line of this. Empire is better

I can't help but feel Obi-wan Kenobi is priming us for Andor. It's the very beginning of the Rebellion, and it's an interesting time. Andor himself came from a Confederate planet, which is potentially interesting; we've never really seen that side.

Rouge One has consistently gone down in my estimation every time I've watched it.

I enjoyed it a lot the first time, but it's just so relentlessly dour. And the characters are so boring. And the Darth Vader bit is so shamelessly fan pandering.

It's the War part of the title taken literally and the heart ripped out. We heard you like Star Wars, so here's more of just the War bit.

The ending is the best bit, but mostly because it means the movie is over.

100% this.

No wait.

100% the opposite of this.

R1 is the only SW film since Empire that has gone up and up in my estimation the more I’ve watched it. It’s a genuinely excellent film, irrespective of its licence.

Rogue One is a great film not just a great Starwars film.

It just has ordinary people fighting the war. It’s not dour, it’s a film about a desperate suicide mission, not Mary Poppins

If you hate Rogue One, you hate Starwars because it’s the only legit decent stand alone movie in the series.

A New Hope works perfectly as a standalone movie, especially when you consider it originally didn’t have episode IV written on it.

It’s also hilarious to suggest that R1 might work as a standalone movie when so much of it is just fan pandering with no substance. Without the rest of the franchise it would be about 45 minutes of terrible characterisation, shit shaky cam action scenes and an ending that would make literally no sense if you weren’t a fanboy desperate to see that character do some cool action.

  • 3 weeks later...

I somehow missed the trailer from a few weeks ago. After the cheap, rushed feel of Obi Wan, this looks much grander and more cinematic. That trailer has the feel of a proper prestige show rather than something knocked out to pad out the listings. Tony Gilroy has done some amazing stuff so I've got high hopes for this. In particular, I can't wait to see the political intrigue of the Senate in the age of the Empire. Those few lines in ANH where Tarkin makes it clear that the Emperor is only just managing to exert complete control leaves plenty of room for paranoia and manoeuvring in the halls of power, something Gilroy should be at home with. The senate stuff is boring for kids but as an adult I find it one of the more interesting things about the prequel era.

Agreed there - terrible writing aside, Palpatine’s political manoeuvring turning the Senate into turkeys voting for Christmas was pretty good.

Me too, @Waggo

Rogue One is fantastic - it's also brought us the superb Rebel Rising novel about Jyn Erso's life with Saw Gerrera (as well as Catalyst - but that's shit so don't bother!), so it'll be interesting to see how the story is set up on the other side of things.

Loads of potential with Andor - really looking forward to it.

It does seem odd. About 80% of the posts in the Obi-Wan thread are along the lines of "after enduring yet another hour of Disney's execrable 'Obi-Wan', I am more convinced than ever that this is a bad television programme".

And obviously spineless Disney are pandering to internet racists by making two shows in a row about white male lead characters/woke Disney are continuing to force their woke agenda by making a show about a friendly terrorist from Space Mexico (delete as appropriate).

Im just looking forward to a show that won't feature a Skywalker, I imagine Vader will be around somewhere but I hope he doesn't feature

Yeah, this would be a good opportunity to focus other Imperials - the officers, scientists and loyalist senators as shown in the trailer - rather than the space wizards. I wouldn't even mind if they conjured up Tarkin again. The CGI was uncanny valley in Rogue One but the actor under the effects was really good. Maybe they should just let him play the character and put a headpiece on him to replicate Peter Cushing's bizarre Dracula-shaped head.

I don't really get on with Star War books, but I did read Lost Stars, which is the one everyone recommended since the Disney reset. It's not bad, but one aspect I really did like was seeing the Imperials from the point of view of the core worlds people who are doing pretty well out of the whole Empire situation and don't want to see the cost of their comfort. Seems pretty relevant.

There's some social progress. Andor could never have happened in the '00's.  No 'Merican would tolerate someone who speaks space French in a lead role.

The daft thing about that was that Guy Henry doesn’t look unlike a younger Cushing anyway. They might have had better results just ageing him up.

I hope Andor is amazing and universally adored, not because I deserve to have nice things (as an Obi Wan hater I clearly don’t), but because then I won’t have to read people constantly moaning about other people moaning about how shit another SW show is.
