I was trying quite hard to remember if Andor had the opportunity to see outside of the shuttle as he was bought in, assuming his experience to be similar to all the other arrivals. Drawing a blank, though, annoyingly.

 

 

Yes, he did.

He looks down on one of the facilities before the shuttle lands. He sees the water being drawn into the hydro-power systems through large whirlpools.

Episodes 9 and 10 are masterpieces. Just wonderful.

 

The bit with Space Rik Mayall, holy fuck. Sinister. The speech. Gollum man. Oh god. So good.

 

I get the impression that in some senses this will follow a bit of a path like Firefly or even the original Star Trek. A small adoring viewership and a series that eventually matures into cult status. It's absolutely the best thing on TV right now and one of the best sci-fi treatments of fascism and the costs of fighting it there has ever been.

 

I do think the ending of this has to be a release of tension similar to the XWings skimming across the lake in Force Awakens. Two seasons of people getting fucked and endless ratcheting tension for probably the best appearance of a Rebel fleet or some other millitary realisation of Rebel power in Star Wars history. I keep hoping someone mentions Incom or something. Followed by fascism getting at least one full proton torp in the chuckies.

what Luthen says, he's fighting for a sunrise he can never see. The point is that rebellion will require sacrifice, like that faced by Lonni, Mon Mothma and the prisoners in this very episode. Many will have to give up everything for something that they will never see. That's why Kino didn't leap straight to fighting. He only did it when he realised he was going to die in prison regardless.

Diego Luna is pulling off an incredible performance in this show. It’s one of the most selfless leading actor roles I’ve ever seen - Cassian gets none of the big moments but he is the absolute lynchpin that everything revolves around. 
 

Between the actor and the writing it’s an amazing depiction of a pure survivor, and just how inspiring that characteristic is to others in hard times.

I think it’s a bit more complex than that. To me the real theme is that the rebellion, for all that it is needed, is just as much about manipulation and expendable humanity in pursuit of cause as what it fights against, as it is about being the ‘good’ side, the side of what’s right.

We see it with Andor being manipulated by his greed into the heist, and when he comes home he is starting to see how his actions have again made life worse for his community, after having already done so. And for this he gets to fuck off on space holiday to forget about the huge suffering he’s helped cause. And when he ends up in prison he finds his actions have had even harsher ramifications on ordinary people. And while he’s suffering there, people he knew personally are having their lives utterly ruined, thanks to his actions.

 

And all the while his rebel manipulators have decided that he knows too much about the purpose they drew him into serving, and are doing their best to eliminate him as a final thank you.

 

It’s a deliciously spicy meatball.

One of the interesting things is how he challenges the attributes you'd usually ascribe to a "hero" and actually presents a far more believable character for it. He's quiet, observes things, picks his moment to act, selectively decides morals to best suit a situation, isn't instantly likeable or ripped/shredded. He's a survivor, like you say. Along with the themes of fighting fascism and the nature of what good or bad truly is (and how your appreciation of it may have to change to fight for a longer term better outcome) as well as the personal sacrifices that people need to make for the greater good it's complex and inspires actual real discussion on motives, values and outcomes. 

 

Nobody is clean in this. Baggage, damage, chaos and horror track everyone around, even when they make the "right" choices. And I fucking love it.

It’s for these very reasons that every episode makes me more and more excited about watching Rogue One on Wednesday morning after the finale. I know there is likely going to be at least one more season but that just means I will go through that process all over again when that is ready :)

Just finished. Best Star Wars thing ever I'd say. Makes even the original movies seem bigger and better somehow, the universe more real. Outstanding.

So many individual performances that were just nailed on. The blond ISB lady, Cassian, Gollum, Mothma, etc etc

It is brilliant. There have been no space battles and not even a whiff of a lightsaber and it's better for it in how it proves this is a universe that can grow beyond some of it's more popular elements.

(I say this as someone who's generally enjoyed most of the recent output to some degree apart from Boba which left me mostly cold)

I really liked the way he described how Andy Serkis’ character saw his role in the prison as his religion and that his freedom was like the afterlife for him.
 

Also was pretty telling that Gilroy had no involvement in the blue milk cereal - it’s clear that he has no interest in the Star Wars stuff and there are others at work slotting those bits in. Complete reverse of all those making of shows were they talking about being fans since they were kids. 

 

 

This is great, thanks for the tip. I've listened to all their discussions about Andor - proper in-depth stuff that the series deserves.

There's humour in Andor, it's just not the flippant self-aware stuff we've becomes accustomed to from the MCU etc. There's humour in B2's scenes, in the backstabbing ISB scenes, Syril's early scenes acting as a pompous arse on Morlana and the dressing down those corpsec guys get from Blevin. And between Syril and his mother. And the guy asking if he can be called 'Prefect' and Blevin's response. And the sniping between Mon, her husband and Tay Kolma. There's plenty of appropriate, integrated humour that arises naturally. In fact the bit where the not-K2SO droid appears stuck out to me a bit because it's the only scene with a slightly sillier sense of humour.

Visiting Cleveleys though? That's wrong. Even if they set the best tv show ever made there, I couldn't recommend going. The only reason ever to go was the WHSmiths that sold C64 games, and the arcade that had some SNK games and SFII, but both those reasons are gone now.

 

They do have a nice tabletop gaming shop now though.

 

Admittedly the kids werent thrilled at being dragged to look at what was a disused public toilets (the store he is going to when he gets arrested)

 

I dont dislike Andor, just not really my thing. But I can enjoy it enough.

I've actually re-watched the first six episodes all over again this week because I couldn't help myself. And I concur with the above: there's lots of subtle humour laced all through the series.

 

Along with the stuff mentioned above, there was also a little moment I hadn't caught before: the Imperial prefect on Aldani says to his wife and son "I want everyone to be on their best behaviour" and his wife says something like "when I see any, I'll let you know."

 

There's also a fantastic bit of dark humour from Luthen just before he heard about

He is showing a client some jewellery, and explains that the inscriptions on them are in a language from a culture that has gone now, so she can decide the words "mean anything you like", while he's smiling all the while. But you know he's essentially making a dark joke to himself, as we'll know it's because it was probably a culture the Empire has wiped out and erased the history of.

The guy who would ultimately intend to betray them comes across so differently when you know what he's planning. The way he's sounding out Andor to see how he reacts is for different reasons etc.

 

Plus lines like "you'll sleep tonight" from Andor to the young guy before the heist: when I watch it now the dialogue is actually darkly foreshadowing his fate, which must have been intentional.

Not “many Bothans”. It is Manny Bothans, one of Andor’s aliases. “Manny Bothans died to bring us this information”.
