I'd never heard of this woman before The Mandalorian and to be honest I quite liked her character and performance in the show but there's no doubt the right decision has been made here. It takes genuine stupidity and belligerence to tweet yourself out of your own Star Wars spin-off show, I mean wow.

Abhorrence, in my mind, would be to say something like "The Jews suffering at the hands of the Nazi's has been overblown by history" 

 

In that tweet she's drawing a false equivalence between the Nazi's propaganda, turning ordinary people against Jews, and modern politics and news media promoting hate of others due to their (in this case political) beliefs.

 

If that is the only thing she said then I'd have thought an apology and a clarification of her meaning would have been enough.

 

Something like

"I am sorry for being so clumsy with my words. I do not diminish the suffering of the Jews in any way, I just wanted to comment about how hate is used by fascists to create power for themselves."

 

I don't care that she's been sacked at all.

Yeah, it's the accumulation of other stuff, including the anti-vaxxer, anti-masks rhetoric and the controversy over trans pronouns. If she had been fired 'just' for the recent tweet, it would have been over the top. That tweet was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I really liked Cara Dune, her and Mando together with da bébé in da egg are the iconic images of the series for me. She couldn’t act very well, but that is a long Star Wars tradition. The Muppets always out-act the humans.

 

Anyway, you can’t go round publicly posting hateful anti-Semitic craziness if you’re the public face of a Disney kids TV show, so bye then.

 

Pretty clear they had a whole raft of stuff planned for the character though, spin-offs, comics, novels...The story of the population of Alderaan who became refugees is well worth telling, so I hope there’s another character that can run with it.

Not being able to act would become more of a problem when she was going to be the lead with her own show.  Timothy Olyphant can probably do a Rangers show in his sleep, if you put Bill Burr and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee in there, I think it could work.  Or maybe get Lucy Lawless as a replacement.

However I’ve read her most recent tweet a few times now and I don’t see the anti semitic side at all.

She's trying to compare the process of state indoctrination of a country to hate a whole group of people as the first step towards wiping them out, to people shouting down people with stupid or repugnant views. The false equivalence is absurd. And obviously one that was going to get her sacked.

No. The forum is just fed up of people coming in and defending abhorrent shit from a position of near total ignorance and without actually calling out the thing for being abhorrent, thus making it look like they think the abhorrent thing is not actually that bad.

 

If you want to genuinely discuss these kinds of things, I highly recommend the following strategies:

 

1. Call out the shitty thing for being shitty. This is key to your post being taken in good faith. Don't say that it's obvious that that is your position, because often it's really not.

 

2. Spend the same amount of time that you just spent defending questioning the shitty thing on researching the situation before actually posting. In this case, "Gina Carano offensive tweets" would have been more than enough to give you background on the situation.

FWIW there have been other examples where public figures have compared treatment of X group, or strategies used by X group, with the treatment of Jews, or with the Nazis. If that comparison is felt to be obviously wrong, IE that the thing they are comparing is anything other than genocide, then it is widely accepted under the definition of anti semitism. The reasoning behing that the act of comparison is minimising the seriousness of the Holocaust and what actually happened. 

 

That might seem like a stretch until you remember that attempts to undermine and minimise public perception of the Holocaust has been a priority for far right groups over the years.
