This entire show has had almost exclusively completely new characters leading it from the beginning.

I agree. That was partly why I was enjoying it. New stories in new places about new people. Then we get the MCU style shoehorning in of characters that add little in their own right, other than to encourage you to keep up your Disney+ subscription. And then we ditch the central plot device off to a pile of bad CGI.

I'm being meaner about it than I actually feel, I think, but I do wish they'd avoided the temptation to get back in the ruts. I've been lazily binging the Clone Wars series on D+ since I finished the Mandalorian, and it's really not very good. A handful of decent episodes at most across 7 pretty padded seasons. And whilst, by the end, I also liked Ahsoka, her presence in this is literally just to say "be sure to tune into my forthcoming series!"

@Uncle Mike I started watching Clone Wars and hated it. Skipped to the last four episodes of Season 7 and loved it, and then just dipped into what the Internet told me were the decent arcs, like Ahsoka being kicked out and the Mandalorian stuff. Did the same with Rebels.

If I’d watched it all the way through without skipping any I’d have been pretty miserable. It has some really good arcs, but there is a hell of a lot of padding. I mean, if I’d watched it as a kid it would all have been amazing and I would have fond memories of it forever, but I’m nearly 50.

The problem with that is there have been books and comics set between ROTJ and TFA so we know what's going on around this period in terms of Jedi and what characters are up to and the Lucas story group are really on point with keeping everything without contradictions.

If you're a fan of the larger universe from other media then you'll know that was the only option that makes sense.

Didn't they junk all the expanded universe stuff?

Is it established in the books/comics/games that for 100% that there is only 4 jedi or only that there are only four that we know of?

If Cal Kesis is canon, then that sets up that there were other Jedi in hiding during the reign of the empire so it's not crazy to believe there could be more. Yoda told Luke that when he was gone, Luke would be the last of the Jedi, canon changes all the time.

if the character was interesting enough, would you probably wouldn't really care.

They only junked the EU stuff that was established before the sequel trilogy. Clone Wars & Rebels are still canon but loads of books/comics were cut.

I’ve not been reading the new timeline books at all. Have they established when Luke sets up his Academy ? Does he do it straight after RoTJ or is Ben Solo part of the inaugural class ?

I think it's around five years after ROTJ. He spends a while exploring old Jedi temples around the galaxy and learning about the Force. Given The Mandalorian's position in the timeline (5 years after ROTJ), it could be that adopting Grogu is the point that he decides to embark on his teaching career.

There's been 100s of comics and roughly 20-40 new books that are all part of the canon.

I've only read Dr Aphra- which is excellent. She'd exactly be someone I'd like to see turn up in a live action.

Spoiler

still think it would be fine to introduce new Jedi in this, but it also made sense for Luke to find baby yoda.

The

Spoiler

Luke

reveal wasn't what got me in the last episode - put me in the camp of being a little ambivalent about the small universe thing, but I do think the show had earned it fair and square at that point.

The bit that really got me was

Spoiler

Mando removing the helmet to show the child his face.

God damn, if that didn't move you, your heart must be black. That was some peak star wars. I could barely keep my shit together.

I absolutely loved season 2 after a slow-ish start, but my main worry was that I was perhaps enjoying it too much. Like, I knew it was stuffed with fan service. It's clear they are setting up more series with guest appearances. They are leaning on nostalgia and established characters, including bringing some back from the dead. But none of that impacted my enjoyment in the way I might expect it to on paper. I actually couldn't believe how pumped I was when Boba Fett finally made a proper appearance, after being really sniffy about the idea prior to S2 airing. It must simply be because it was all built up and executed so well (in my opinion).

I have gone on quite a journey with this series. Right off the bat I was disappointed about how simplistic and 'TV-like' it was in terms of script and performances. By that I mean pre-Sopranos 80s and 90s TV. But now I absolutely love it.

I think it's a mixture of a few things: adapting to the kind of show it is, and re-watching it from the start with my 8-year old; growing to like the characters, as you tend to do with TV shows.

But I also do think that it's upped its game massively as it's gone on. It started with the penultimate ep of S1 and has been on an upward trajectory ever since. It's got a bit more to it than I first gave it credit for, and that's really come out in season 2. The Bill Burr episodes encapsulate that for me - there is a massive gulf in quality between the two as far as I'm concerned.

I loved the Prison break episode in S1, but the one he was in in S2 was top-tier, universe-expanding stuff. That scene in the cafeteria was excellent. You're just getting used to Mando taking the helmet off and then that conversation between Mayfeld and yer man happens. Fucking brilliant.

I couldn’t agree more. The show had already proven what a fun, original Star Wars story looked like - it didn’t need a crutch to walk, it’s been running and skipping along for two seasons. The ending was entirely deserved.

Read the last few pages. The prison episode in the first season is the absolute shittiest episode in either season. So any criticism of other episodes is null and void if you love that episode.

Also, no “soul”? Get in the sea.

Nah, the country village one is the worst surely. The prison break one does some universe building and has Richard Aoyade. And Anakin Skywalker.
