Just catching up to the second season, finished episode 5. I've not seen any opinions on the season itself and maybe I'm way off the mark, but episode 5 is the first episode that lived up (in any shape) to how I feel the premise should be handled. It was well plotted, there was space to breath at the right moments, the dialogue wasn't stilted and plain rubbish and the acting was good across the board. I gave a wry smile at the end when Dave Filoni's name came up as writer and director.

 

Anyway, it was really good imo and stood out to me hugely compared to what I've seen previously, including the first season. It'll be interesting to come back to the thread after I've finished the season and read others opinions! I'm prepared to be in my own little world!

This thread shows yet again how throwing in a bit of character development completely ruined the Star Wars fandom.

I've already said in this thread that basically using two seasons of a different story to lead into showing ten minutes of Luke Skywalker wasn't what I wanted from the Mando finale, but others have really enjoyed it and that's great. That might read as me trying to be superior but it honestly isn't, if you want more from the Skywalker story more power to you, it's just not what I want at this moment in time. 

 

The people I'm referring to are the same people that sit in waiting for anyone to mention Star Wars for a chance to quietly mutter "not my Luke...." or "why was Poe stupid..." or "Rhianna-" wait did someone actually use "Rhianna Johnson" as an insult before basically explaining that they didn't understand Poe's arc in The Last Jedi as any of this was some sort of criticism. Wow. 

 

Anyway, I'm referring to the same people that have been making the fandom completely toxic since someone tried to actually develop a character beyond what they were before a 30 year gap. Again I have no issue with people not liking TLJ, but it's the constant mentions every time anything happens with Star Wars about how much they hated it that just baffle me. I really really hated The Rise of Skywalker, but that's it. It's done. I really enjoyed a lot about Mando Season 2, bits of it were some of my favourite Star Wars in a long while, but literally none of me was compelled to come on here and rag on Rise of Skywalker. I just wanted to talk about how good Mando was. I think that's part of what annoys me with everything linking back to the Skywalkers. I have to hear the same idiots making the same points about a thing I really loved when all I want to do is enjoy new stuff with that music and those sound effects and bloody lightsabers. 

 

I just want to enjoy new things and... how can I put this...

The character development you refer to was shit character development, and you can't just rewire a character anyway you like and call it development. Particularly if you don't, you know, do any of the hard work of developing them via showing an actual story.

 

The toxic stuff around TLJ is unfortunate because it clouds the fact the film was bad.

You really just want to enjoy Mando so much that you decided to type out a long post to insult anyone who’s got a different opinion to you by calling them toxic idiots?

 

I agree that whoever called him Rihanna was pretty childish, but is there really anything wrong with others, myself included, comparing this favourably to what we feel they messed up in the sequels, on this, a discussion board?

 

Maybe just roll your eyes and move on, rather than attacking people, if it offends you that much.

Regardless of how you feel about fanservice, I think the end of season 2 was a perfect conclusion to the story so far.

Mando's whole quest was to deliver Grogu to the Jedi. One of the most praised episodes of the season had Mando and chums defending Grogu while he called out to the Jedi! Of the few Jedi still around at this point it made complete sense that it would be Luke who answered that call, and if it were anyone else I imagine they'd have taken Grogu to Luke for training anyway.

 

And for what it's worth, TLJ is easily my favourite of the new movies, despite what I feel were a few missteps, and I love how Luke was handled there. However, bearing in mind where this is set I don't see how Luke ends up makes any difference to what he's up to here.

At the risk of dragging this thread away from TLJ...

 

Not sure it has been posted explicitly but Favreau and Kennedy have confirmed that Mando 3 is happening as planned.

Book o’ Boba is a separate spin-off with Robert Rodriguez also producing.


They decided to keep the news under wraps instead of mentioning it as part of the recent the investor day announcements.

Season 2 episode 8 achieved something I don’t even think the original trilogy managed....

There is a lot of talk in pretty much all of the films about the strength of Jedi and them becoming almost mythical following the events of the Clone Wars but we have never really seen how Jedi are perceived by people who have never truly believed in them.

 

Mandalorian does an unbelievable job of creating a setting in this well established universe where a Jedi and what they can apparently do seems like utter nonsense to the core characters. The show balances the excitement and pull of a grounded story while also elevating the more fantastical elements of Star Wars, all the while working toward Episode 8 and it’s crescendo where we see Luke and the Jedi through a lens we have never really had before. Through the eyes of characters (mainly Mando) that are in complete awe at what is happening. Everything the show has done with the grounded elements has lost none of its appeal now that Luke showed up. It’s simply shown how well balanced the entire Universe they are expanding actually is where all these amazing elements can coexist.

 

It’s a very careful and deliberate handling of not only Luke but the entire role that the Force and Jedi play in the Star Wars universe and it is that beautiful handling of it that makes the pay-off so perfect. It’s also the fundamental thing that the new trilogy (not just TLJ) got horribly wrong IMO.

 

 

No matter where things go from here I have no doubt that Mando and everything that spins off and within it is in fantastic shape.

I was slightly underwhelmed by season 2. I remember season 1 being better paced and written but haven't seen that since it launched so it may just be a case of raised expectations.

 

First episode felt grand with the big setpiece (the change in aspect ratio was interesting - was it filmed in iMax I wonder?) and was a great start to the season. After that I feel the writing and tension took a downhill slope with some filler episodes (we need to go to this place to get this thing so that we can get on with the main objective). Side quests. Season 1 had this too but I remember them being better and more interesting. 

 

Generally too many western shooty action sequences with stormtroopers as cannon fodder. I get that this is their role and was also in the original movies but there was just too much of it and it got dull. Seems they spent most of the budget on the opening and then saved some for the final stretch? 

 

I really liked the Jedi episode. Made me think of both Tartakovsky Samurai Jack and Kill Bill whch isn't too shabby. :)

 

And yes, that final episode 8 was great. Some great stop-motion-esque CGI reminding me of OG Terminator. A real sense of threat. 

 

Just call me dead inside. :)

I really enjoyed Season 2. S1 was a bit mixed, but Season 2 was pretty much top tier all the way through.

Boba Fett rejoining. Or is Boba Fett? Who knows. Still, a middle aged Boba Fett who is aging significantly faster than Skywalker was a bit poor, especially after we established there were other bad ass Mandalorians around. I guess the build up with the suit was nice though.

 

I liked the Luke fight at the end, but did t like that Luke was the Jedi. I get why he's there from a story perspective but a series that had broadly made the galaxy bigger took some significant steps in making it smaller again.

 

Still, I can forgive it that misstep.

 

I think it links in with the new trilogy - presumably the Child's blood was being used in cloning experiments under the eye of Thrawn to create a new Emperor?

 

Nice bit if old school EU tie in there.

I think Fett is more like 17 years older than Luke. He looks about 12 in AOTC, and there is five years between that film and ROTS. Luke is born in ROTS. 
 

Morrison does look a bit old to be playing a 45-ish year old, but let’s put that down to becoming somewhat weathered inside the Sarlacc.

I watched Episode 3 of S1 ages ago (primarily because of Werner Herzog) and thought it was fine, if unremarkable. I've been recommended to watch S2 of this.

 

My question being, is the hype real or is this a case of for fans only again? The IMDB/RT scores are stupidly high and I'd like to know if they are actually justified.

Only you can decide that. Watch it or don’t, you don’t need us to try to convince you. You’ll either like it, or you won’t.
