The Mandalorian

A normally I'm down with a good "They are making Star Wars small" rant but

Spoiler

There's literally no one else that could have shown up that

1. Would have made any sense

2. Would have been more universe destroying.

Luke is the last proper. There is a proliferation of other secret hidden force users in other media, and eventually they start weakening the OT. Mace Windu needs to stay dead.

Effects

Spoiler

It's a TV show, not a huge movie. In that context, was great.

Dark Troopers were good too.

Future direction

Spoiler

Do people really want another series of monster of the week?

They are incredibly sharp with the pacing on this. Seasons aren't too long. They mix it up at the right time. This gives an opportunity for new directions while leaving open the possibility of a reunion.

Plus in the middle of all that, he's accidentally become the leader of Mandalore. Everyone's gonna be after him.

That was awesome. I don't know if they can make a million shows awesome, but surely Filoni deserves a chance at making Star Wars movies great again too?

People talk about fans service.

There is such a as bad service.

It happens at a lot of restaurants.

ROS was a tesco prawn cocktail thrown at you for a starter-kind of service.

Mando Chapter 16 was a Heston taste the universe through your eyes-kind of service.

Good service does its job.

I know it was total fan service but I am a massive fan and I feel totally serviced.

I’ve got nothing to add on the obvious stuff but I do want to say that the Dark Troopers were absolutely fantastic, and came across like a cross between Terminators and Hammerstein from 2000AD (they definitely have his eyes!) The stop-motion effect in their movement was perfect and somehow far more menacing than the smoothly animated battle droids of the prequels.

They were so creepy.

I also loved how

Spoiler

Even though they were actual robots able to connect to the ship and open doors using space WiFi, they just went into full on punching mode to open locked doors

In this generally shitty, weird year, I’ve been fortunate to cry tears of joy three times. Liverpool finally winning the league again, getting a job after 11 months of searching and that finale.

Doubled up as still had chapter 15 to watch, so that was a hugely enjoyable way to end the week. Feel wide-eyed wonder like a kid again. Magic.

Spoiler

Exclusive scene from The Book Of Boba Fett

Fennec: Boba! Boba! There! It’s Kyle Katarn from the New Republic! He’s just got off the train.
Boba: He can’t see me.
Fennec: Why not?
Boba: To the untrained eye, this could look like it’s rubbish and I haven’t bounced back.
Fennec: But you have!
Boba: I know! Point him out to me.
Fennec: He’s got a beard.

Shed a couple of tears there. Really enjoyed it.

I knew who had arrived, couldn’t really be anyone else, but I still sat there with my hand over my mouth muffling my cries of ‘omg, it’s xxxxxxxxx’.

To echo @Jg15’s thoughts, my faith has been restored.

So I'm happy people are enjoying this but... well... since we got rid of negs...

I'm really gutted that the culmination of two series of cool original Star Wars movies is Luke fucking Skywalker again. I love Luke, he's a great character and I love how we see him grow in the original trilogy and then change in the sequel trilogy. But I also love Mando. And Grogu. And I was really enjoying watching their story pan out away from space Jesus and his mates. They fought a fucking dragon, they wore awesome armour and did cool force shit, they ate babies! It was fresh and original and it showed how there is space (har har) in this universe for new character going about taking bounties doing fun job of the week type stuff.

And then that X Wing turns up and it kind of feels like everything we've watched them do is just to move us towards this Luke Skywalker scene and the setup of a Boba Fett series. It's just yet more of the Skywalker saga backed up by a slightly worse version of the Rogue One Vader scene and a really really ropey CGI Luke that just sort of stands there and gapes dead eyed and doesn't sound like Luke.

I just want a new story in this universe. I'm not anti nostalgia at all, I thought a lot of the call backs in TFA added nice flourishes and really enjoyed the new slant The Last Jedi put on old characters. But I think I'm disappointed because of how much I was enjoying this story as its own thing and now it just doesn't feel as much like that.

Much as I loved the episode, and as I said the second season just about teeters on the edge of spoiling itself with fan service, I can't disagree with any of that.

That was stunning.

Spoiler

The whole episode was brilliant, and that ending was a shining example of fan service done right.

I wondered if it might be Luke the second the X-Wing showed up, but only because of the talk earlier in this thread about recasting him and all that. I figured it couldn't be though, but then we saw the glove and the green lightsaber. :D

Grogu's goodbye was perfectly done, and both my wife and I were in tears. It was bad enough to start with, but then Mando took his helmet off, Grogu hugged his leg, and then along came R2 and it was all too much.

This whole season has been amazing really, and I'm completely on board for all the new shows.

Loved almost everything about it.

That said: I can see what the naysayers are saying. The arrival did relegate

Spoiler

Mando to a passenger voyeur on his own series finale. I desperately wanted them to open the blast doors and take on the remaining dark troopers prior to the lift opening to help Luke out of a potential stand off. There was so many ways Mando could have been given a few heroic moments to parallel Luke's actions.

That said so much about the two series has been brilliant. Confused about:

Spoiler

So does Book of Boba = Mando series 3 under a new name? I thought I'd read Mando series 3 Dec 2021  as well? Or is that people not wanting to do spoilers in their reporting? Or are there two series to come at the end of 2021 in which case there's no way there won't be a crossover surely.

Regardless: so far the best thing to come from the Star Wars universe since ROTJ.

If loving fan service of that quality is wrong, I don't want to be right. That was easily one of the most exciting episodes of TV I've ever seen. At this point they've totally won me over and basically do no wrong and yet they managed to raise the bar yet again. Pretty much every moment of that was amazing, from the Lambda-class shuttle chase at the start right through to the post-credits teaser. The storytelling, the way it was shot, the designs, the dialogue, the SFX and, especially, the music.

Spoiler

I really have no idea where they are going to go next. They surely just can't do The Mandalorian season 3 sans Grogu. My best guess is that The Book of Fett is season 3, and they will revisit the dangling threads with the dark sabre, Bo-Katan and Din either at a later date or in the other parallel series. Perhaps the behind-the-scenes rumours did cause them to cut the series short whilst leaving the door open. In any case, it's resulted in a great story that actually developed at a reasonable rate and didn't outstay its welcome.

As far as Grogu is concerned, they've set themselves up well for his return. As far as we know Luke has taken him to the site of a terrible tragedy, but that is many years away and anything can between now and then. Grogu's rescue/escape would be an excellent way into showing us more about that massacre and the barely-glimpsed Knights of Ren, whilst also reuniting Din and Grogu without it just feeling like a repeat of what we've just seen.

I'm definitely excited for Narcos: Tatooine though, with Fett as el jefe. I definitely wouldn't have said that a few weeks ago, but Morrison is nailing it as Fett.

It was janky, but It's a TV show, so i'll cut them some slack on that.

Plus it must have been hard as hell during the year we've had to get all that finished, even for a movie. I feel that it's something that might get quietly patched in the future to bring it inline with the quality we've seen in the MCU.

The opening of Terminator Dark Fate shows that it is now possible to do major de-ageing or even 100% CGI heads that pretty much surpass the uncanny valley, so you might be right. It’s okay when it’s kept to very brief appearances but it does still take me out of the moment just because I know I’m looking at CG rather than a human performance.
