The Mandalorian

That was absolutely amazing, I'm close to tears. Who would have thought there were writers that could still do good scripts! It just goes to show if they put the effort in with great music, great action and you end up with TV gold. Finally, good Star Wars is back!

The imperial-trooper

Spoiler

just standing there shocked, holding his tray was funny as fuck

Also, this episode managed at the same time to

Spoiler

humanise the Imperial forces, showing the camaraderie of the troops and actually showing they have each others backs

while at the same time reminding us

Spoiler

that they’re led by insane death-cultists

Up to chapter 14 and constantly impressed out how well this series is put together. Two things I like the most are, one, the fan service without the insecurity. There are nods and winks and callbacks and layers from lore but they’re generally there to serve the story or build on that lore. It’s not done as an incessant reminder that the people making it love Star Wars so much as you do, in the desperate way much of Disney’s other live action stuff has been undermined.

Secondly, it’s events are told with a classic narrative structure. It’s a nuts and bolts approach, but it’s also a system most people are inherently familiar with through decades of absorbing visual storytelling. There’s very little reliance on cheap tricks or suggestive ‘mystery box’ style teases that go nowhere fast. I’m watching because it tells a simple story well, with compelling characters, really quite lovely cinematography and a lot of care paid to pacing to lay intrigue but also let things breathe when necessary.

I do hope now the series is established, there is a limited number of seasons to avoid diluting the overall quality. A total of three or four really good years of this would be more than enough.

Mando’s little exhausted sigh before he squares up to just punch 12 guys with thermal detonators was just a spot on perfect little bit of dialogue-free characterisation. He was really going to just try to punch his way out if that’s what it had come down to

I thought the imperial officer was Peter Weller for a bit of double Robocop but it turns out it was the guy who played the fucking Night King instead.

Spoiler

Jobbed out twice in a row, what a geek

I loved the remixed, more orchestral opening Theme and the bit where

Spoiler

Mando tried to use his normal fighting style blocking hits with his armour but the shitty ceramic crap the stormtroopers wear just broke and he got hurt.

Given that:

Spoiler

Mando and the jailbird were working for the Empire while delivering the tanker, I guess that means all those ‘pirates’  that Mando killed were actually the good guys (Either Rebellion or Freedom Fighters)!!!!!

Yep, thought the same.

Spoiler

Also thought I recognised the pirate species as Iktotchi, same race as Jedi Master Saesee Tinn, except these guys didn't have two massive horns but fleshy head tails like the Twilek.

Not necessarily, they could have been

Spoiler

working for a crime organisation like Black Dawn or Crimson Sun, after the same resources as the Empire.

Spoiler

I saw those militant aliens simply as locals who want the foreign invaders off their land and will sacrifice their lives to do it. Mando has never been a hero and, despite being in the midst of an arc where he's moving beyond being a ruthless bounty hunter, he was right in the middle of being called out by Mayfield for being willing to bend the rules when desperate. Then we get an action scene where the point is demonstrated.

Spoiler

I can imagine nerds raised on a a diet of Marvel Cinematic Universe(tm) characters getting palpitations when the "hero" character they're supposed to identify with does something "bad" because they cannot reconcile the idea that real humans are complex, flawed and morally grey amorphous creatures. The Man With No Name would blow their minds.

which was exactly the point I thought they were making in 1977 when Han Solo shot Greedo under the table. You don’t have to be a nice guy to work for the good guys.

Until George changed it to the ‘self-defence’ guff.
