The Mandalorian

That was great, it's just been consistently awesome this season.

Spoiler

I was really glad Old Billy Burr survived and he did an awesome job again, I was kinda gutted he didn't join team Mando there  at the end but we'll see him again as I'm guessing Rick Famuyima is a big Burr fan because he's been in both his episodes.

Spoiler

That was tiiiiiiiiight.

That was some fucking Sorcerer shit with the explody trucks in the jungle theme.

A RoboCop reference from the droid?

Loved the Fett armour clean up job (but still wearing the fetching battle robes).

One Mando army was a thing. Loved him going to use the trooper armour to block but he forgot it was shit and it got smashed to bits.

I cheered the Empire too... But then it masterfully delves into the nature of the people you were just cheering with an amazing tense scene after.

Mando revealing felt like genuine desperation as well as genuine character growth. Also was that subtly suggesting he used to be a stormtrooper?

And when that slimy officer started gloating about war crimes, when the shot happened I practically punched the air. And the music backing the ensuing chaos was unbelievably good. Some classy sci fi synth morphing into the overall show theme.

Also, MVP in this show is the fucking crazy good vehicle interior design. Just a treasure trove of detail and really tangible physical presence for everything that makes it feel functional, inhabited and interactive.

Was just gonna say the same thing. Well, probably more along the lines of 'I like big trucks', but the sentiment was there.

Also loved how queasy Burr looked in *that* scene. Sold it brilliantly.

I know they blew shit up, but I wonder if Mando is now on impy records? Might not matter, but still....

Oh, and it never occurred to me before but the Slave_1 does seem a bit shit for hot pickups/extractions if the crew need to be seated before it can go vertical. All costs crucial seconds.

Spoiler

Probably not an issue at the moment as they can’t correlate that face with Mando - he wasn’t seen by anyone while wearing his real armour. I suppose they could discover the data breach, look at the destruction at the refinery and the message sent almost straight after and put two and two together though.

I've probably missed this in another thread so apologies, however I just read it has been announced that Rosario Dawson is getting an Ahsoka spin-off series (set between Rebels and Mandalorian) airing in 2022. Filoni as creator/executive producer.

I'm in.

It's in the general (Kenobi!) Star Wars thread, but bears repeating as it's excellent news :)

What I love is how Filoni can make a couple of ships feel threatening again. The OT and the sequels were all like: Star Destroyer! Super Star Destroyer! Death Star! Death Star II! Death Star III that destroys entire solar systems!!

Galactus cannon that fires 60 Galactuses per minute, each with its own flail made out of a Unicron!

Filoni can make two TIE fighters feel like the biggest threat imaginable in that moment. Bringing back a sense of scale and reasonable threat is so, so vital to telling decent stories without constant escalation.

Fuck me this show just keeps getting better. I thought the prison break episode from season 1 was crap yet here we are a year later with the same writers, director and guest star and it's about a million times better. Maybe it's partly that I just adjusted to the kind of show this is, but I really feel like it's on a whole new level. The acting, effects, script, sets, cinematography - just an insane improvement. This episode also felt a little deeper and more contemplative despite still containing loads of action.

Spoiler

It's funny that we were discussing Rodriguez doing last week's and whether Tarantino would want to do one, then this week we have a very Tarantino-esque scene in the mess hall. It was so good. Bill Burr was brilliant.

I loved the manner in which we got to see Din reveal his face again. I assumed it would be to Baby Yoda first, but the fact he does it in act of desperation, in front of someone he doesn't even like, even getting his face actually scanned in the process, was much better. I also thought it was hinting at a past in the Imperial navy. Surely Imperial security doesn't just allow any face to access sensitive data like that!

Boba Fett looks totally boss despite being relegated to getaway driver for this episode. Loved his buffed-up armour. Then at the end when the TIEs are chasing Slave-1 I was thinking, oh yes, please drop one of those bad boys. Funny to think that those epic sonic charges were introduced in such a crappy film. The production and audio design has always been amazing in Star Wars no matter how bad the actual films are.

The effects work is top-notch as well. I honestly had no idea how much was on location, how much was in the 'volume' (the Unreal-engine powered virtual stage) and where the practical sets ended and the CG started. The fight on the lorry was virtually seamless.

I'm starting to get immersed in the the new EU and just played the Battlefront 2 campaign, which deals with Operation Cinder. To me it seemed like Palpatine was trying to deny assets and critical Imperial (and perhaps Sith) secrets to the Rebels in the event of his defeat, so his most trusted officers could retreat and begin re-arming in secret. It kind of make more sense if Palpatine had a longer term plan for returning from the dead, rather than a petulant final command in the event of his death.

I was really looking forward to ashoka appearing but personally I think they're going to struggle with her.  I assume rosario dawson didn't get much prep on fighting as all she does is wave her hands from side to side.  They're going to struggle getting the fluid movement of animation onto live action, especially if they aren't going to give rosario dawson a lot of prep time for action scenes.

I'm assuming that's the reason he's still wearing a big skirt with his armour, despite it looking a bit dumb.

I quite like this, though, the necessary improvisation and ramshackle, imperfect nature of things. Like Mando’s ship getting progressively more knackered, and literally being held together with fishing nets at one point.

It looked to me like the inner cockpit rotates to keep them level relative to something something something i can't explain properly.
