During that episode I sensed something. A feeling I’ve not had since.....1983.

 

Honestly that was one of the greatest Star Wars anythings I’ve seen in decades, although Rogue One came close. The beautiful shots, the OT, Prequels, Clone Wars all referenced subtlety and lovingly. Then some real “No fucking way!” moments and reveals. 
 

Like the best of Star Wars and the best of Westerns in one perfect package. Just like it should be.

So Grogu was already being trained at the Jedi Temple prior to the Clone Wars, is he truly the love child of Yoda and Yaddle?

 

Also the fact that Thrawn is still alive and kicking is great, he made for such a convincing and menacing villan in Rebels.

 

Another KOTOR reference, the HK series, although this was HK-87's.

An excellent summation of what works and what doesn't. And I have to say with only recently being familiar with the Clone Wars series, that probably carried it quite a bit for me. It's starting to play too much to the "fandom" this season, objectively.

That was absolutely brilliant. My wife loved it too, and she's about as far from an EU nerd as you can get. 

 

On its own merits it was just a really well done samurai story.

As awesome as the Thrawn reveal was, I'd be surprised if that led to anything much this season. I'm sure it was just to explain what Ahsoka was up to.

 

We finally have a name for Grogu, and an explanation for his abilities. I wonder who it was who his him?

I think it is becoming a signature Filoni move to incorporate some of his favourite creations into these series he is involved with, and I personally don't have a problem with it (as long as it's done right).

Clone Wars/Rebels spoliers follow:

 

When Ahsoka turned up in Rebels it was a nice surprise. Of course, at that point, the last we had seen of her was her leaving the Jedi as Season 7 of Clone Wars had yet to be finalised. We then got the Vader fight in Rebels from which it appears she is killed but its later revealed that Ezra is able to save her.

 

The fact that her voice is heard at the end of RoS, along with the voices of other Jedi past, can only infer she dies some point between Mando and that film.

 

Anyway I had no problem with her appearing, or her portrayal in this episode. I do wonder about her connection, if she has one, with Luke in this era.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say I’ve never seen any of the cartoons that are being spoken about in this thread and I thought this was a great episode. 
 

I didn’t need to know who the Jedi lady is for the episode to work.

I enjoyed how bleak the setting was, this episode. Reminded me of Excalibur or something. Wish it could’ve gone all Green Knight, come to think of it. Anyway, I would like someone to make a bite size way of knowing wtf all this extended universe stuff is, because I haven’t the time to be catching up on several series of cartoons and novels.

As someone who's never scratched any EU stuff, I am not exactly the same excited when a character from the cartoons turns up searching for someone from the cartoons/a book/I dunno.

 

I thought when

Katee Sackhoff at the end of her guest episode is all "Go and look for Ashoka, tell her Bo Katan sent you"

 

sounded awkward and obviously designed to make me excited in a way I wasn't.

 

I really liked the part where Mando is told quite bluntly

As someone not drenched in Star Wars lore, I think it would be better carving its own path than riding the trails of previous works. But that doesn't seem to be what's happening. I assume I'm already supposed to know what's going on the the Moff and his room of steamy armours, where a lot of the general story is aiming us and, because I can see but not enjoy the foreshadowing and Easter egging, I am starting to wonder if the show even wants me to watch it.

 

Having said that, it's still beautifully shot and really nicely put together and I like the slow pace and tone etc. It's just felt like it's pandering to the core a little too often.

To be fair, I’m not sure if it’s just pandering, Filoni did spend a lot of time crafting these characters and it is natural I guess to carry on those stories.   This show does feel like it is tasked with stitching things from the movies together and laying a lot of groundwork for other shows to come.  I am hoping that Mando does take off his helmet at some point and we can get a bit more from him.

I do wonder, had the Mando been another Filoni animated series, would it have been anywhere near as popular as it is currently?

 

And for those that might argue that The Clone Wars or Rebels are Kids shows the Mando isn't really any different. The violence, stories, character wouldn't feel out of place in either of those shows. Other than the fact that Mando is live action and the other two are "cartoons" thematically they are aimed at the same audience.

This stuff is all very valid criticism of the series at this point - but mainly the second season which is leaning more heavily into other works. So far I think the balance has been maintained, but it's certainly not as "fresh" as the first season felt.

Same. It'd be nice to briefly hear her thoughts on the fact that anakin had a kid with Padme (which I'm assuming she didnt know), became vader, then got killed in a fight with said kid during a brief moment of redemption. It'd be quite the update! You'd have to assume the skywalker name has become something occasionally whispered in folklore tales at this point if nothing else.

I really don't think any of what we've seen requires knowledge of the cartoons. My wife has now knowledge of anything outside of this show and she seems to be managing just fine.

 

No Clone Wars or Rebels spoilers below by the way.

The story is told almost entirely from the perspective of Mando, who has never met Bo-Katan, never met Ahsoka, never seen a Dark Trooper and never heard if Thrawn. I can only assume he doesn't even know about Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader.

 

It's obviously cool for those that have seen the cartoons to run into live action versions of those characters, but I don't think it adds much to this story either way. You don't need to know Bo-Katan's history to understand that she's a Mandalorian who knows the location of a Jedi. You don't need to know Ahsoka's history to understand that she's a Jedi who could train Gogu should she wish to. She explains in the show that she knew Yoda, and it's not a huge leap to understand that she was talking about Anakin when she mentioned a Jedi Knight who turned to the dark side. Even if you don't, it doesn't actually matter for the purposes of the scene.

 

The Thrawn name drop is the one thing that means nothing if you don't know who he is, although I guess that adds a bit of mystery. I'd be surprised if he actually shows up in this anyway.

 

Finally, my only knowledge of Dark Troopers is that they were a thing in Dark Forces, and to my knowledge have never shown up in the new EU before now. Again, it's cool if you recognise them, but for the purposes of the show all you need to know is that Gideon is doing something sinister with them involving Gogu's blood.

Bearing in mind that Luke was, without a shadow of a doubt, the biggest hero of the Rebellion I find it hard to believe that Ahsoka wouldn't know about him or his Jedi Order. Why she didn't tell Mando to go see Luke at the end I dont know?

 

Luke and his new Jedi Order seem highly secretive in the new canon compared to Legends, maybe purposely. In Legends they very quickly became famous, especially with Luke reopening the Jedi Temple on Courscant, becoming heavily involved in New Republic affairs as the previous Jedi did. In this they almost don't appear to exist as maybe Luke has learned of the Jedi past mistakes.
