Hanzo the Razor
That sounds pretty uninspired. The combination of Favreau's involvement and that it's set in the relatively safe post OT, pre ST years doesn't fill me with much interest.

RubberJohnny
I think an episodic format is probably better for Star Wars as it doesn’t suffer the weight of expectations for being an event. But making it about the generic proud warrior race guys is the least interesting thing you could do with it, and just another nostalgia play.

Boothjan
Interesting - could play out like some of the New Canon novels which are often set around the same timeline, but sort of set around the fringes of the main stuff. I'm certainly not going to condemn it based on one throwaway paragraph. Let's see what extra info we get.

Darren
Ooh, set before the rise of the First Order, but in the outer reaches of the galaxy beyond the New Republic. Lots of space there (ha ha) to tell any kind of story at all, but I suspect this will be the medium through which at least two of JJ's mystery boxes will be opened - how the First Order rose at all, and the whole who is Snoke thing. I'm going to have to subscribe to Disney's online streaming thing aren't I?
SeanR
so, you're saying that Snoke is Boba Fett after being partially digested in the sarlaccs stomach?
K
Mixing Star Wars with another genre worked pretty well in Rogue One, and slightly less well in Solo, but this could still be pretty good. A sci-fi western set in the aftermath of a brutal war has been done a few times before, not least in Firefly, but the summary above makes it sound like it'll be more Clint Eastwood than Maverick. Not sure about the title - the Mandalorian sounds like gibberish. I seem to recall that the reason that Star Wars TV series that was supposedly modelled on the Sporanos never got off the ground in the noughties was because it was just too expensive. A TV series that's been spun off from some of the most expensive films ever made is always going to struggle to compete in terms of spectacle, or even just in terms of having a lot of different locations, so it'll be interesting to see whether they even try to match the visuals of the films, or whether they go for character and intrigue instead. I agree. One of the upsides of the sketchy scene-setting in TFA and TLJ is that I'm now genuinely really interested in the blanks between the end of Jedi and the start of the new trilogy, so they've got me there. It's the perfect time for a big budget Star Wars TV series, what with Disney launching their own streaming service and presumably throwing money at projects like this to get people champing at the bit to subscribe. It could look almost as good as features. Battlestar Galactica looked almost film-quality 15 years ago. Investment in TV, and the talent it can attract, has boomed since then. Favreau seems like a good choice as a showrunner as well.

They've already explained most of those, it's just that the explanations are really dumb. The Empire decided to commit suicide after Palpatine died by blowing up all its worlds in Operation Cinder, then they just decided to start it again (you think they'd have saved themselves some trouble by not blowing themselves up) and abducted a bunch of kids and hired some people to build ships for them. That's it. This is in the main campaign of Battlefront 2, but no one cared to play it. Snoke had like three explanations - originally he was supposed to be Plagueis, they play his music and Daisy Ridley almost outright said it in an interview, but then they seemed not to want to go that way for the Last Jedi and started laying the groundwork in Rebels and Battlefront 2 for an explanation that he was going to be from outside the Galaxy, with Palpatine having created Observatories around the Galactic Rim looking for something. Then literally a few months before it launched they decided not to do that and went with "no explanation", but Rian Johnson gave a novelist some notes about adding a terrorist attack where some senator gets crippled by a chemical weapon, so he's just that guy. Despite only existing for a few years, they've managed to make the new EU somehow dumber than the old. I know Kieron Gillen used to post here, but every issue of his comic has something as daft as that picture of Han Solo punching a giant weasel. K
Having Plagueis as the true identity of Snoke is JJ Abrams and his mystery boxes in a nutshell, really. Set up a plot thread and get people engaged by promising some amazing revelation down the line, except the revelation is that it’s some guy you barely remember who was briefly mentioned in Episode III, and whose only significance is that brief mention. Rather than build an interesting character, just reference an old one and let people’s attachment to the series do the hard work. Rian Johnson’s decision to just kill him off was probably the right thing to do. His identity is irrelevant, and getting rid of him lets us concentrate on the future (i.e. new, interesting characters like Kylo Renn and Rey), rather than pointlessly referencing the past.
RubberJohnny
I don't really buy that logic, he's a new character even if he had a name we've heard before because that was just a namedrop and not an actual character. Like Han namedrops "King Prana" in TFA, that's not a character in the movie. If he had a character design and an actor doing a performance, then now it's a character. Snoke is still Andy Serkis doing a good performance, it doesn't become irrelevant and from the past if he has a different origin.

I meant more that the eventual revelation that he was Plagueis would be a bit anticlimactic for those reasons. I didn't think there was much wrong with the character as played by Serkis, although he was very much an emperor surrogate.

If he'd basically figured out some Force quasi-Immortality, that could be something to tempt people with, and the waiting 50-60 years for revenge might be fun. It's one of those things if they could execute it right it'd be good, and if they don't it's one of those stupid thing that shrink the universe. No in between. But I just would have liked any story. How did he reform and rebuild the Empire? How did he turn Kylo? How come he didn't strike against Palatine if he's seemingly even more powerful. I care about himess as a character, as a thing that influences other characters I care about.
