Google Stadia - 2 months free pro (as long as you don’t want to use a chromecast)

Recommended Posts

I've been quite impressed with it, playing AC Odyssey was a better experience than I'd get on my standard PS4. Looked better, loaded quicker.

But that is the problem Google have, it relies so much on your set up that everyone will have a different experience. Not everyone wants to piss about wiring up their home and not everyone knows about home plugs. The games will come but I'm not sure how they'll solve this problem.

I'm very impressed with the technology too; Destiny never looked so pretty and, after years of being a console gamer, reminded me how much I miss the mouse.

But I'm just not 100% convinced the games will ever come. It sounds like developers aren't interested in doing whatever work it takes to bring them over; I would happily drop real money on things I can't get elsewhere (Chimera Squad being a timely example).

Just got a Doom 64 code from Stadia as a result of buying Doom Eternal. I guess they were just working on this in the background!

I set my Stadia controller up to work with my PC last night. The setup process is slick so they got that right and I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft or Sony released controllers with that sort of WiFi functionality. I'm running Edge as my main browser and didn't encounter any major issues. Loaded up Steamworld Dig 2 so I could compare it to playing natively on the Switch. It was fine at first but after I unlocked the first achievement in the game it went haywire and eventually booted me from the game saying my connection wasn't up to scratch. Odd.

The controller is nice though and I like how much oomph the rumble has.

I just noticed that Doom Eternal's patch notes talk about reducing input latency on Stadia. It's totally non-specific but will give this a try later and see if this is noticeably better because it was very poor compared to other titles.

As a mac user, I've never had chance to play with keyboard and mouse, cos ya know - no games etc.

So I've given Stadia a go and I'm happily playing Dead War 4 (which is a cracking B-grade game that I thought they don't really make anymore. It feels like it should be on the Gamecube - and I use that as a strong compliment).

Stadia is actually bloody great. The graphics are fine on my iMac, a bit blurry but don't pop or anything. And I haven't been bothered by lag (though it does stutter occasionally). No juggling hard drive space, or updates. Fantastic.

I was totally against streaming games, but this could be a huge success.

I mean it won't. Because a) google abandon everything they start and b) people have no faith in them to buy a library of games because google abandon everything they start.

But then again google have addressed these issues by a) not bothered to release any games onto stadia and b) charge full whack for the 3 ancient games they have.

All that said I might keep my sub for a while past the two months if there is something still to play. It's cool.

I gave this a quick blast for 20 mins and it seems to be fixed. It plays like the Xbox version now to me.

What does prominent Stadia partner Take Two Interactive think about the service now?

Quote

"It's not a game changer," Zelnick said. "People who want our games now can get our games now. The fact that you could stream them and not have to have a console interface is really not that big of a deal."

Well, I'm sure that...

Quote

"If you're going to pay $60-plus in US dollars for a frontline release, and more internationally, are you really unwilling to buy a $300 console?" Zelnick mused. "The belief that streaming was going to be transformative was based on a view that there were loads of people who really [had] an interest in interactive entertainment, really wanted to pay for it, but just didn't want to have a console. I'm not sure that turned out to be the case."

Oh.

I don't think this is some great blow against this service but oof.

I've cancelled my pro subscription for now, they're just taking too long to release this on other devices. I want to be able to play it on my ipad or android tablet, or even my phone. I know i can play it on a pc or laptop browser, but i have a gaming PC.

It's a good service and i'll likely subscribe again once they make it natively more widely available.

You may be able to do it I the android tab if you set chrome to load the desktop site.

I got one of these for my phone, it's great.

  • 2 weeks later...

My free two months runs out today, and I've made sure to cancel the sub (Google were really upfront about reminding me, which I appreciated.)

All in all, I'm reasonably impressed by the technology, but not by the overall product/platform. At its best, it's a little worse than I feel I get on my PS4 Pro. The graphics are a little fuzzier due to the video compression, the lag does exist (it obviously matters more in some games than others) but is fairly small, it does work.

But I was still too prone to the occasional network glitch which obviously holds it all up, I was disappointed that loading and so on wasn't more instant, and the business model makes no sense to me. Paying a subscription and buying at full price seems crazy.

This seems to work natively on my phone now using the stadia app! I have a Xiaomi Mi 8.

Hoping that it'll work on my Samsung tablet too.

confirmed now works on android tablets on the stadia app. The quality seemed better than on a pc chrome browser too. I'll likely re-activate my pro sub now :)

Strangely no wireless controller support using the app on phones so you bed to wire up your Stadia controller. You can also set resolution by device now, which is much better.

They really should have launched with all this stuff working.

I haven't tried on my phone but I was using a wireless dualshock 4 on my tablet earlier, i'll try with my phone later. Totally agree that this should have been the state that the service launched in.

Yeah I mean the actual Stadia controller. You can use it wireless on Chrome but not on the app.

Did anybody else get a £10 credit yesterday? I signed-up for the free trial but it wasn't for me so I cancelled, hence this 'incentive' for me to come back (which I won't, my internet wasn't anywhere near good enough for it).

I got the ten quid, and my sub ran out last week! I got Doom 64, even though at 4 quid it was a bit of a waste, but anything actually good I wanted was well over the tenner, and paying my own money to only own games on someone else's server still just seems wack to me. I only really run Stadia as a kind of Internet test, so Doom 64 is as good a game as any.

Every pro member has £10 to spend in the store.

Yeah, I'm not a pro member though as my free trial ran out a month ago.

Deleted the mail as soon as it arrived :P

If you change your mind, logging back into Stadia still shows it, the voucher wasn't tied to the email.
