Google Stadia - “now a Game Pass killer: The Crew 2 >>> Forza Horizon”

Recommended Posts

Another great thing about this: I was playing Cyberpunk 2077 last night and received an invite from a mate to play something else. Within about 15 seconds the game had launched and we were playing together with voice chat. It's a game I'd never played before (and is free on Pro), so normally it would be a case of checking I have it, then me downloading it and updating it etc, but on Stadia it was just BAM, in the game. Undeniably there are drawbacks to streaming a game vs playing it locally, but there are so many upsides it's hard not to love it.

My Premiere pack arrived at 8am this morning after ordering on Saturday night, and I had a quick go earlier on. Image quality was stunning, and again performance was flawless. Very impressed with that.

Just a shame Cyberpunk 2077's HDR implementation is so awful <_<

So are you saying the chrome box actually improves your Stadia connection/performance?

Yes. It's presumably because they've got control over the whole hardware and software chain when you're using the Chromecast when compared to Chrome browser on [insert_your_OS] running on [insert_your_hardware].

I find the difference is minor/not-noticeable when streaming 1080p@60 but huge when trying to stream 4k@60. Chrome would always be dropping frames and the image quality isn't as good to the point I didn't want to use it. Chromecast is awesome though - totally counterintuitive given that it's a £40 dongle.

Yeah what solidified that Stadia is no good for me personally on my personal internet connection personally was the sheer gap in results I got between Grid on Stadia and Grid on my PC.

I played it on Stadia for a trial and it felt laggy but.... Codemasters games sometimes do and I finished some early races in 5th or so.

Got it cheap on PC 3 months later so I thought I'd give it a try.  It didn't FEEL that much different but the exact same races were all easy 1sts.

I had the same experience with the first few races with Grid on Stadia, really struggled with it.  I just hooked up my new Stadia pad to the laptop with a USB cable and the first race I did I came first by miles. I don't know if it was bluetooth lag before or if I just fluked the race this time, but it felt like I was just playing a local game.

14.3?! I swear down I just updated this thing the other day...

In other news, my controller/chromecast combo arrived this morning. That’ll need wrapping as soon as possible, to remove any temptation to open and ‘test’ it.

Apparently Stadia should work natively on iOS now assuming you've updated to iOS 14.3: https://9to5google.com/2020/12/16/google-stadia-is-now-fully-playable-on-ios-w-a-dedicated-pwa/

It's not working here for me, anyone else have it working?

Wow!  Yes, working here and with better results than on Chrome on my laptop - both wifi.

Now then, where do you get those natty phone holders that clip onto the controller?

It might be just me, but I think Cyberpunk looks even better now since the update.

100%. It looks phenomenal, and far better than it does on my One X (plus it’s 60fps). Been playing it on my iPhone (so you’ll have to forgive that white line at the bottom of the screen):

I finally got my Stadia today after DPD took it on a wild goose chase, have to say I’m very impressed. Only fannied around for 40 minutes or so in Cyberpunk but there doesn’t seem to be any obvious signs I’m streaming it rather than playing on a local machine.

That may well change when combat comes into things, but so far it’s nice.

Is there a big different between cyber punk on stadia pro Vs regular stadia? I played it on vanilla on my TV and thought it looked noticeably inferior to the ps5 version

Assuming you're using CCU in both instances, the *only* difference is a 4k HDR stream for Pro. Cyberpunk only runs in 1080p in the Stadia servers but the generic upscaling Stadia delivers to create a 4k stream does signifcantly improve image quality in my experience. HDR is obviously a big improvement too if your tele supports it.

I've not played Cyberpunk on PS5 but the general consensus of the reviews seems to be:

PC > XSX > Stadia > PS5 > PS4 & XOX

With the primary reason for PS5 lagging behing here being that it's running the PS4 version emulated without any specific optimizations. I've got the XSX version and can attest that it does run better than Stadia but the difference isn't that big.

Interesting, I was playing on a PC with a wired controller though.

Maybe there was a specific issue there that got fixed and your hardware change is a red herring.

How are other Stadia Cyberpunkers finding this? I have to say I am fairly stunned by how good it is, it seems like I’ve no right to be playing a game like this on a platform that is effectively free.

I was honestly considering buying a Series X at some point to play this game (before the review storm I might add), and now I’m like what’s the point? This does everything I need.

I haven’t tried unplugging the Chromecast to see how it looks without the extra juice, anyone compared them?

The point is that the Stadia library is extremely limited. But otherwise, Stadia is surprisingly good.

Yes I get that, but personally I’m not too interested in playing anything else on it - I have Switch with plenty of games on I’ve not yet played, and I’ve essentially bought this as a Cyberpunk player. I’ll keep the sub for a bit to see if I use it. I just don’t play that many games anymore.

The other real selling points to me for XBox are Halo and Gamepass, and if I don’t play Stadia much beyond Cyberpunk it’s probably unlikely I would have found the time for those anyway.

I prefer the sequel (there are more tombs and secrets etc and I love the snowy setting). It’s my fave of the bunch. They’re both really good, however.
