Google Stadia - “being buried in a deep hole next to Google Circles and the rest”

That’s exactly the scenario I envisioned when Stadia was first announced, and takes it into the realms of ‘undeniably convenient’. It’ll be interesting to see what effect it has on uptake... assuming Google really are in it for the long haul!

I wonder if this means we’ll get an app for current LG TVs too? I mean the Chromecast is hardly obtrusive, but it would free up a hdmi spot.

I must admit I’ve no idea what it does that the tv isn’t capable of doing natively.

I played Borderlands 3 in co-op with a mate last night. He was on his phone with a Kishi and I was on my MacBook with mouse and keyboard, both using voice chat through our headphones. Again, it was flawless.

We’re living in the future, right? It certainly feels like it.

That's my first thought too. A shitload of game buying types bought the CX due to the perfect storm of tedious lockdowns and two brand new next gen consoles launching. You'd think, hardware permitting, that both Google and Nvidia would want to tap into that market.

I bought Stadia Pro off the forum in November and have been using it a fair bit, but only the free Pro stuff.  Its a shame that even with an 8.99 per month subscription all the new titles are almost full price to buy.  Its a shame that the Stadia versions are not discounted.  I may cancel once all these lockdowns are done with.

( Yeah i know... Spring 2022  )

Apparently, Stadia uses about 12GB per hour when playing at 1080P. Which seems like quite a lot - Youtube uses about 1.6GB per hour, and Netflix uses about 3GB per hour. Not quite sure why given that (as far as I can tell) it's just streaming the sound and video back to you - why would it use so much more bandwidth than, say, a 1080P Youtube video?

I haven't noticed any issues with playing something on Stadia while someone else watches Netflix or iPlayer.

I imagine it's down to compression. Stadia games have to be compressed and streamed on the fly, finding a balance between speed and size. A Netflix video will already be compressed to a higher degree.

It'll be compressed much less optimally. A piece of pre-recorded video will have gone through a non-realtime, multi-pass encoder. Even something live streaming will typically have 5-20 seconds (I've made this up from probably out of date technical memories) of latency to optimise the encoding. Clearly Stadia can't do that. The amount of data that can be removed when you take longer to encode it is remarkable.

So it seems like this is by far the cheapest way to play 4K games on my new TV. I see that the preier bundle comes with a controller, chromecast ultra and a few months of the pro sub scription, but a few other questions:

Is there a good resource for searching online to see what games are available and how much they cost on Stadia? The google website is a bit of a mess.

Are the free games all there like gamepass or are they ones you needed to be subscribed and add to your account like PSPlus?

You can look on the Stadia online store (you need to be logged in), or there’s https://thestadiadb.com.

It’s a bit of both. You need to add them to your account each month like PS Plus, but there are quite a lot of games that stay available to add for more than one month, and at any one time there are quite a few to ‘claim’ (a couple of dozen, maybe?).

I got a premier edition with cyberpunk and it didn't come with any voucher for pro service, so not sure if the stand alone one does still.  Check ebay as well as I got a second band new & sealed premier kit for £45 to use on another TV.

I don't think everything has 4K support, but most of the big games seem to be in 4K.

Is it actually 4k? If 1080p on Stadia is a 12GB per hour as K says, it'll be 4 times that for 4k, right? That's 48GB an hour, sounds like a lot.

Edit: Updated for simpler maths (and error in calculation).

4K uses up to 20GB per hour.

Looking at this yesterday I made a note to check next time I was on the chromecast to see what my stream quality was like.  I fired up Destiny and the HDR logo popped up on the TV.  I opened the Stadia connection monitor to find that my connection quality was "fair" and while I had 5.1 & HDR, 4K was not supported on my connection.

I have 76Mbps BT broadband and the chromecast is hard wired to the switch with a gigabit network.  This computer is also connected in the same way and using the google speed test here https://projectstream.google.com/speedtest tells me my connection is great.  Now up until I checked this I was really happy with how it looked on my TV, but now I know its not working properly I'm a bit annoyed and want to figure out why.

I’ll check my connection then, because if I’m not getting 4K and it looks amazing there’s no point paying for the pro sub while I’m only playing Cyberpunk.

Although does that mean I lose HDR as well? Not sure what difference that would make.

Where do I find the connection monitor @Jonny5?

I was thinking the same about the pro sub @ZOK!  Just hit the Stadia button while playing and there's a button labelled "Connection".

In terms of me doing a speed test on the chromecast, if I cast a tab from Chrome on the computer to the device is that actually loading the page on the CC or simply streaming a video of the speed test running on my computer?

I just checked and I’m on ‘Excellent - No issues detected’, giving 4K resolution. I’m connected via wifi. It says ‘data usage may reach 20GB/hr’.

For reference @Jonny5 I’m on BT, can’t remember what package but I’m getting 55mb down and 17 up.
