New game from the Steamworld studio. I have high hopes.

No, it can only be connected for non-Stadia uses via USB cable. Connecting to Stadia on whatever device is wireless though.

I'm pretty sure you can use the stadia controller on PC with a USB connection, but not bluetooth/wireless. No idea how well the buttons map/can be mapped to any particular game though.

 

One thing about 'free' Destiny: it's just the free-to-play version that exists on all platforms. Most of D2's content is in its expansions, and the free version doesn't have most of that in it; now that they've stripped the original D2 campaign (Red War) out of the game that leaves a lot less stuff to play.

Like everyone else I've just ordered the £20 Stadia hardware bundle. 

 

Specifically this is with the intention of gifting Cyberpunk 2077 to my girlfriend for Christmas. I was going to get either the Xbox One S or PS4 versions, but apparently they're terrible. 

 

Is it actually possible to gift a Stadia game to someone? 

 

She has a Google account already so once I give her the device, it'll be fairly straightforward for her to register for Stadia (I understand it makes you take a trial of Stadia Pro that you then have to cancel, but that's a relatively minor inconvenience). 

 

What then? I can't have to just send her the price of the game and tell her to buy it herself... can I?

I just had a dig around my account and can't see any 'Buy as Gift' options.

You can share games within a family, if that helps?

Also bear in mind that there is a Pro tier (for £8.99 per month) as well as standard, and if you want 4K rather than HD you need to be on the Pro tier.

 

You get around 4 games a month you can add to your collection to access while you are on Pro, I pay for it but I wouldn’t say it’s great value for money compared with something like Game Pass, but if you want the higher resolution that’s what it is. It used to be when you sign up you get a voucher for a tenner or so that comes off your next purchase, but I don’t know if that’s running now.

You can share it with people in your ‘family’. I did this last year for exactly the same thing your trying to do now, and it worked a treat. Just asked my brother for his gmail address and shared the game with him. 
 

I also bought the £20 bundle recently, so now I’m playing that gift myself, one year later!

 

The tech is still absolutely incredible, draped in a completely wrong-headed business model.

Bought it the other day with 3 months of pro trial because I had YouTube premium. The streaming is great and seamless but I’ve already put the thing in my infinite drawer of plastic tat (anyone want a Sony eyetoy) as there’s nothing new for me to play on it and feels wild to pay for games which costs more or can be played natively somewhere else. Too many free games in the world!

It’s hard to tell! I think you used to get some months free with Premiere, but now you sign up separately and get the first month free, which you can cancel before first billing.

With the 20 quid deal (Stadia controller and Chromecast) you just get a month of Stadia Pro. I can't really get too excited by Stadia Pro to be honest, there's stuff worth playing but it's all stuff that's on Gamepass anyway... I can't really see a reason to go for it. 

It's a shame, the technology is there but the content just isn't.

Most of the games aren't rendered in 4k in the background so "Pro" is really 4k upscaling (albeit a nice upscale).  Also, the general pattern developing now is for games to have a "performance" mode which means 1080p at 60fps. Cyberpunk, RDR2 and Control all basically don't benefit from Pro under this model for this reason.

 

Pro has surround sound too, but it's a really narrow implementation of surround sound (raw PCM) that many things don't support or TVs don't pass through. Again, limited value.

I've long thought (and said) that getting pre-installed with TVs must surely be in the endgame plans for Microsoft too (but they will need to improve their tech.) I wonder if they would come sniffing around when Google inevitably get bored and look to close it down? Or perhaps Sony would jump in to give their upcoming service a big leap forward?
