The Arcade Ten

Recommended Posts

There's a nice sub-plot in the discrepancies thread chewing through the shift from the arcade coin-guzzler to the 'experience' title, and there's a fair bit of mourning for the former.

And I get that, but they're also in rude health in the here and now, even if they rarely claim the spotlight.

Let's have it then. No mercy.

Your pure arcade top tens. No fat.

Arcade machines I have enjoyed playing in the past are; (I have not played an arcade machine for at least 27 years)

Gauntlet (this machine actually used to electrocute us if we touched the metal parts)

Daytona

Outrun

Star Wars

Afterburner

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Space Invaders

Operation Wolf

I have left out any games that I would have had at home as I had various Atari's and I feel there is a big distinction between Arcade gaming and home gaming, even if home games can be arcadey.

2. Golden Axe (I vaguely remember playing it on a machine though I mostly played this on the mega drive)

3. Pac man

4. Time Crisis 2

5. Mortal Kombat 2

6. The house of the dead 2

7. Donkey Kong

8.  Crazy taxi

Those are mostly home console games.

That's right, because arcades are dead now - they have no where else to put arcade games.

Space Invaders

Nemesis

Street Fighter 2

Galaxian

Battlezone

Tempest

Outrun

Yep like shooters....Lots of others...  loved all the Sega cabinet games - HangOn, PowerDrift, Space Harrier, AfterBurner and the full car version of Ridge Racer. Just something magical about the arcades... in particualar the games with hydraulics made for a great experience that you couldn't get at home....

Edit: Forgot Roboton 2084 and Defender too....

More accurate.

This is not a retro thread. Or, are we not allowed to list arcadey non-'experience' games that breach 240p resolution?

So what are the rules for posting here, again? I'm confused.

Arcade games.

Don't have to have existed in a cabinet, as long as you know they're pure action coin guzzlers.

So Nex Machina can be here as readily as sit-down Out Run.

I think its about games you played in an arcade? Perhaps though the age demographic might be an issues here... Last time I poked my head into an arcade it was just full of gambling machines and dance games....

In fact the last time I went to what felt like a proper old school arcade was when I visited the Game On exhibition a while back... it was bliss. Also the National Film Museum in Bradford has a fair selection classics on the top floor... including a Defender, Space Invaders and Street Fighter 2 cabinets... they only take 10p's too....

I couldn't put these in order as some remind me of certain places and people while others were just the most fun game playing experiences.

Gauntlet
Bomb Jack
Border Down
Rastan
Alien vs Predator
Chase HQ
Narc
Streetfighter 2
Ghouls'n Ghosts
APB

Dragons Lair

I had that in my list initially, but I was just so rubbish at it.  I could get much further in Space Ace, so have fonder memories of that now.
