Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

I'm probably late to the party with this one, but decided to take a nook miles trip which I haven't done recently, and got a lovely little island where the waters were full of whale sharks and sun fish - think I took seven or eight of each of them home. It's amazing what you can fit in your pockets!

I haven't played an AC since the DS version, and this has been GOTY but mostly because of lockdown. Even so, the core game has barely developed at all, and the updates being used to re-introduce elements from old games, rather than new content and ideas, which is disappointing.

There's a Pokemon-level degree of doing the bare minimum and a fear of meddling with the formula, but what strikes me is how little depth or gameplay there really is in the various systems, where they could easily inject a ton of depth and variety with trees, plants, bugs etc. Limitations are everywhere, and they work in favour of the game's laid back nature, but also impact on longevity. Creativity and editing has some bizarrely arbitrary restrictions, the colours limit, design limits... you can't even paint fences.  Why don't fences fill half a block allowing you to place & align an object over the other half? They've even taken out ball physics. The new diving update is super limited, with even less of a game element than fishing. It makes you wonder why it wasn't there at launch, seems like an intentional dripfeed rather than being held back by development... hasn't this version been kicking around since the Wii U anyway?

The other major area of disappointment is allowing 10 villagers but only 8 character types. Despite there being a ton of written dialogue in the game, most of it is repeated across these types with little unique variation. So I've had 4-5 lazy villagers come in an out of my village and all say literally the same thing. That's a budgeting problem, because if Nintendo can employ writers for 8 character types, they can afford it for... 80 tbh. How hard would it be to replace "bugs" for one of a dozen other nouns. Or include variants from previous games so we don't always get the same sea bass joke. "It'll do" seems to be the philosophy, because, like Pokemon, there is a sense that fans won't expect any more than this.

If they introduce lots of new timed events, farming and cooking, cities, multiplayer games... that would help a lot. But there is so much missing from the previous games it's just a bit of a downer to play it everyday for 3 months and then have nothing much to do outside of grinding for seasonal drops, and checking in for the rarer items and updates.

Having said all that, definitely in my top 3 GOTY, so *shrug*.

No ball physics is just bizarre, I’m sure that the first game (the only AC I’ve previously played) had it. You have this big beach ball that’s fixed solidly to the ground like a stone. I like all the items that’s in the game but the complete lack of interactivity with them is so disappointing, it highlights that they are there just for window dressing. Small things like having villagers interact with items would add an extra layer (although they do with some items), kicking a beach ball to each other etc.

Scooters that you’re unable to use or the arcade cabinets not having a small mini game attached (or classic Nintendo arcade games) just create a distance between you and the world.

It is Nintendo and the big shake up in this version of the game was terraforming and the freedom to craft and individualise your island. Nintendo don’t throw too many changes into the mix. It’s a shame as it’s such a good game but there are so many missed opportunities and I don’t want to wait five years to see if Nintendo feel the same.

I'm really enjoying the game. I haven't played an animal crossing since the cube so all the things that are missing vs other instalments aren't things that I notice (except ball physics...).

I got this on the day of release and as a family of 4 we've played it every single day. It's lovely to have a thing that all the family play together. Except on the 1st of each month when the kids argue about who's going to donate what to the museum. "It's not fair, he donated more than me last month"...

I've just spent 2 hours rearranging my house and noticed that some of the wallpapers gets reflected off my astronaut's helmet. How cool is that!

One of my villagers sent me a real painting through the post this morning.  Which was nice.  Except it was one of about three that I already have in the museum.

I have a couple of duplicate real paintings for swapping, what one is it?

I highly recommend a visit to @Unofficial Whos lovely island. It is a winter wonderland!

Given that the astrological month ends in two days the meteor shower was perfect timing as I have not collected any stars this month and need two cancer frags for the cancer table. Fingers crossed!

I got crabs too!

Just a small point on this. It's 80 times the 12 languages the game is in. I'm not at all confident enough to predict the budget shortcomings but if you are you should include the consideration that the development will have forecast the game as an international game. 12 times the budget for writers' time is significant.
