As far as I know, all the wands just allow you to have up to 8 pre-set costumes on tap at the shake of a wand.

 

If you're not interested in clothes or your appearance then wands won't be of much interest. I, however, always have 8 costumes ready to go

The wands are a terrible missed opportunity imo, because otherwise I like the dressing up. I immediately stuffed them into storage after realising your outfits are taken out of storage and trapped inside the wand system, plus outfits can't share the same item(s). If you want two outfits to use the same glasses, for example, you will have to buy them twice. Plus you have to take off your outfit outside Mable's before you go in to buy clothes. I've no idea why they couldn't just work like shortcut/recipes like every MMORPG, plus Bloodstained and probably several others.

 

I finally caught a Mahi Mahi tonight! I only threw 7 bait this time. I've caught every single available fish now (since I got the game in early April).   I'm dreading trying to catch the Stringfish, apparently that was a nightmare.

I don't know what a Mahi Mahi is, is it a sea or river fish?

Yeah, I had the same reaction when I randomly got the recipe for the Bamboo Wand and made that (Celeste had weirdly not chosen to give me the Star Wand recipe - perhaps my daughter got there first).

 

I'm basically going to use it for having some total dress-up outfits on standby (e.g. Wizard, Astronaut etc) rather than for any kind of routine clothing, as losing those items from the wardrobe is a dealbreaker. On the plus side, presumably if the clothing disappears into your wand, then it doesn't take up space in your storage...

I keep 3 of each bug and fish in storage so that I can get models from Flick and CJ when they appear.  Firefly will be going to Flick next I think so fingers crossed its good

 

Agree that wands are 50% amazing and 50% frustrating

 

I'm not sure how many fish have been available so far in the Northern Hemisphere but I have 61 in my Critterpedia now.

Had a great evening of fishing yesterday, mostly on Nook Ticket Islands which I've not really used for a few weeks now but thought would be a good idea for 'new month' hunting.  Think I did 6 or 7 islands and got:

3 new fish

1 new bug

1 new recipe

4 gold nuggets

A couple of other 'rare' fish that I needed to collect for CJ model purposes

 

Just after finishing that I got a new fish on my island too!

 

Stringfish was indeed a massive pain, Golden Trout was just as bad

I'd just like to say that the model of the great white shark is disappointing.  For completionists only IMO.

I'm new to AC and I have a quick question, apologies if its already been answered, but this thread is nearly 400 pages long! 

 

I haven't started a game yet as I've only just (finally!) got hold of a Switch and AC and the plan is to start this afternoon with my 6 year old daughter. Having listened to various podcasts there appears to be some frustration that parents have let their kids start as mayor but because you can't change this later on they find their own progression blocked. It feels a little mean not to let my kid be mayor but don't want to have my (very first) experience of AC ruined. So what does rllmuk recommend? Let my kid be mayor and suck it up (fair enough - it is for her), or find a reason to persuade her that I should be mayor?

 

Also, as I'm completely new, any starting tips I should be aware of?

No personal experience as I play solo (although run two accounts on my island to give more rooms to decorate).

 

I think if you let your kid be mayor you should be prepared that you might want to play on their account sometimes to progress the game.

She kinda did! (She used some of saved up birthday money with her older brother while I paid for the rest). Looks like I'm the pauper!

I'd let her do it but make sure you can "help" from time to time just to keep things ticking over.

Hmm, well if her brother also paid then it'd be unfair for her to be mayor and not him. So would be fairest for all if you were, can't be seen to be favouring one kid over the other now.

Aah, right.

 

A wand is of no use to me at all then as I have worn the same outfit since the first week although, that said, I have recently added a mysterious dress to my repertoire for off island trips. Just to look all fancy like.

They're all pretty small and disappointing aren't they? The oarfish and coelacanth certainly are. But it's basically a case of, having a model made, or selling them, and I don't need bells. Insects have been a mixed bag. The preying mantis and tarantula were a little meh, but the Queen Alexandra's birdwing is impressively large. Butterflies in general probably have the most potential to look half-decent in model form.

As she's spent her own money towards the game, I'd let her have the honour of being the mayor. I'd also make sure, just like @thesnwmn said, that you can log onto her account and do some progress to make sure you carry the island forward at a steady pace. While joint accounts can do a lot of things, like donate fish, bugs and fossils to the museum, there will be some limitations that only the mayor can do.
