The 'Not So Famous Celebrity' Death Thread :(

Recommended Posts

Loved Blake's 7 growing up, and Darrow's turn as Vimes in the stage version of Guards Guards. It remains the only Pratchett adaptation that I've enjoyed and it was largely down to his performance.

RIP indeed.

I never watched Blakes 7. Kind of passed me by. Worth watching? I'm fully aware it got a bad rep for wonky FX, but I really don't give a shit about that kind of thing if the story is great.

It was compulsory viewing for me back in the day, although I’ve not really seen it in years. If you don’t mind early-80s Doctor Who sound and visual effects, you’ll be fine. It’s very much of its time in that regard.

No, I don’t mind that at all. The whole lot seems to be on YouTube at the minute as well.

I rewatched the whole lot a few years back and I reckon it still holds up. Mind you I grew up in the 80s and am used to that 70s/80s BBC Effects Unit style of production. Thankfully the writing largely shines through, there are some great episodes although there is a bit of filler. The drama concentrates more on politics and character interaction rather than aliens although there is a bit of that. Avon is to many, including myself, the stand-out character thanks to his depth and Darrow's excellent performance. It's also one of those shows where you're constantly going "it's that guy off The Bill, isn't he?", great for that sort of actor-spotting. If you enjoy TV SF and can get past the pre-CG effects this is well worth a watch.

I'm going to give the first episode a go tonight. I think I'm exhausted by CG overload at the expense of story these days anyway (Discovery, I'm looking at you).

Start a thread in tv forum if you like it?  Listened to Big Finish Blake's 7 at work today.  Would have been one of the last ones he recorded "sniff" :(:)

Irish comedian Brendan Grace died, 68. I don’t know if his work was known much outside this country, but many will have seen him as Fintan Stack on Father Ted.

Freddie Jones - in the likes of Krull, Young Sherlock and many, many more.

Fantastic actor. But he looked ancient in Firefox. He must have lived to a grand old age

Sad to hear about Freddie Jones passing as a child of the 80’s he was always one of those “oh I’ve see. Him before” type actors from krull, dune and of coarse one of my favourite movies of all times you do Sherlock Holmes.

Yes - he was 91. Looks to have worked up until he was 90.

One of my all time favourite characters.

"If you ever say that to me again... I'll put your head through the wall"

He had his fun. That's all that matters.

Richard Williams has died aged 86. He was animation director of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, director of Raggedy Ann & Andy and The Thief and the Cobbler, and author of The Animator's Survival Kit.

This is a good video on his work:

The Thief and the Cobbler is among the films with the longest production histories ever - which also makes it one of the most upsetting stories of a director's work being taken away from them and released in heavily altered form:

http://flipanimation.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-thief-and-cobbler-recobbled-cut-mk.html

It took so long partly because of how absurdly ambitious it was. I wouldn't say it's my favourite style of animation (I find such perfect smoothness kind of off-putting!) but technically it may be  unsurpassed.

He was also responsible for possibly the scariest version of A Christmas Carol ever made: it's one of the few adaptations of the story to include the Ignorance and Want bit (at 16:50) which terrified the hell out of me one Christmas!

And still creating amazing things in the last few years:
