Bad bits in otherwise good games

Some of the tank bits in Arkham Knight were good fun. Mostly the Riddler ones.

I spent the final boss doing a 1990s style exploit where I find a bit of the map he can’t effectively attack me in and live there for about an hour. Slow, boring, incorrect, but it works.

The last levels in Advance War. A campaign which teaches you to think tactically, rewarding planning and strategy. And a final level where instead the game becomes a battle of attrition, whittling down a boss over many turns, relying on spamming rather than deep thought. Such a disappointing end to a fantastic game.

The speed run ending to The Witness. Worst section of any game I've ever played, takes everything it taught you the entire game and shafts it with its own frozen turd.

You would be correct to assume that I never completed this section.

The torture mission in GTAV. Edgy and ironic it may have been, but I can't say I enjoyed it. Trevor's character in general was just entirely unlikeable. You could argue that that was the point, but it's hard to invest in someone who you just wanted to be arrested.

The final boss in Dark Souls 2. What a let down. Especially after the hard as fuck DLC bosses, and Gwyn in the first game.

It was at least not necessary to complete the game, but it does feel at odds with everything else. Probably the only real misstep in an almost perfectly designed game.

I stopped playing not long after Trevor appeared. That was more of a 'final straw' thing though - all the missions up to that point had been incredibly dull.

One off vehicle-based chase/escape shooting levels in a game where your character is otherwise on foot. They’re always shit and annoying and sometimes game breaking (like I still couldn’t get past the one a few levels into Star Wars Battlefront 2 after a dozen attempts, despite dialling it down to the easiest setting, so had to abandon it forever).

The investigation sections of the Ace Attorney games. Not that they are bad, per second. Just that they are not nearly as exciting and dramatic as the court-based parts of the game, and feel like filler in comparison.

Yeah... I kind of think that's why Psyche-Locks were introduced in 2 - to give the player that same feeling of breaking a witness. :D There are some cool moments with evidence reveals though - one of my favourite bits comes from PW1's fifth chapter:

Spoiler

Finding Ema's fingerprints on the cloth scrap. It's a nice dramatic turn in an otherwise routine investigation :)

I’m going to assume that Okami is a wonderful game.

I wouldn’t know however, because the unskippable intro sequence is so long and awful that I never progressed further in it.

the chattering ‘voices’ (and I use the term loosely) still haunt my dreams.

Almost every boss encounter in almost every game. Ever.

Yeah, there's several games I've ended up quitting that I was otherwise enjoying and doing fine in because I couldn't figure out the cheap trick required or it was a massive difficulty spike.

My answer was going to be "The stealth section in Shenmue" but I think I'll just go with "The stealth section in..."

You can totally skip it in the HD versions!
