Streets of Rage IV - Survival Mode DLC and Anniversary Editions Out Now

I'm disappointed that they didn't include the run/ dash/ roll mechanics from SOR3. Axel's walking mobility feels so inadequate compared to how some of the enemies dash around the place. The short reach of his regular attacks compound the issue as it can be difficult to get in range to attack quickly.

This is really good, but god am I crap.

I sort of have this dim recollection of just button bashing my way through Streets of Rage 2 on what I assume was normal difficulty without any real problems. Now there's guys with shields that you can't just stand in front of and biff until they fall over. I even know what to do, but my instinct is to just stand there and bash them.

My first impressions are that this has really brought out the tactical side of SOR, which was probably always there, but back in the MD days it was only ever the bosses that gave me gip. The new moves, special attack risk/reward, new enemy types plus more enemies on screen really makes you think more about positioning, prioritisation, crowd management and move selection. It's fantastic. Those little tactical additions like better integrated specials, juggling, weapon catching and the hard attack make all the difference.

Did anyone catch the Shinobi graffiti in stage 4? Hopefully hinting at the next project :wub:

Yes and yes.

Unrelated, but Shinobi on the Sega Ages collection on Switch is one of the best things I've bought in ages. Being able to rewind the bonus stage to kill all ninjas is amazing - when I was a kid, having one of the bastards jump on me was always super stressful. Now they all die every time! And that stage select... man, so good.

I hope they support this a little bit post-release too though - I can think of at least two obvious characters that aren't in it, for example.

Personally, I'm loving the game, but there are Streets of Rage fans and retro gaming fans on Twitter complaining and debating about whether this is worthy. Sigh.

Nobody tell them Final Fight was better. I don't care what DF say about the AI. I mean... SoR4 is still ripping off paying homage Final Fight character design.

J / Two P = Signal

Poison = Nora

Bill Bull = Big Ben

Bred = Galcia

Dude, most of these were in SOR2...

And 2 is STILL better than Final Fight.

And SoR2 copied them from Final Fight. 1989 > 1992.

As a series, SoR is undoubtedly stronger. Especially considering 4.

Yeah that's kind of my point. This series was absolutely direct competition to FF because it wasn't on a Sega console until the Mega CD version.

Anyone else having even more nightmares on the Gamepass version for online co-op?

Yesterday it would crash after about 10 mins of play, today it's not even getting into it. Presumably the servers are fucked or something.

It's a real shame, because I don't want to have to play it solo.

I went through 6 stages yesterday and had a  great time :) I think it's everything I wanted it to be aside from one or two annoyances.

There's a section where there is no y-axis and you're stuck on a fixed line (on the ship). There is an enemy with his hands in his pockets with yellow trousers who has this one bloody attack which has three kicks to it. Basically, I walked toward him and it triggered his kick and whilst I was on the floor he kept backing off meaning I couldn't get near him Tried again but this time tried jumping and it triggered the same three kick thing which counters anything I have. I literally couldn't do anything to him and was stuck just being pummelled until I died. i think eventually he got close enough for me to catch him with a punch after he'd kicked me for me to break the cycle. It was still infuriating at the time as there's nowhere to go and no-way to counter! If I'd have had the metal-arm dude I could have fired the special laser attack, but I think I was using Blaze.

Aside from that though, definitely a 9/10 for me. Can't believe I'm playing it though without paying a penny (gamepass)... kind of feels wrong :unsure:

Surely this is the... correct speed?

This isn't some "I'm used to PAL speed" thing is it?

Sorry - you are absolutely right. I'm conditioned to hear the 50hz versions as the 'correct' ones, so they all sound too fast.

Could be because the Game Pass version is a patch behind?

Look, I'm sorry everyone, I know I said I was done, but we're clearly going to have to do another top 100 games of all time list sometime as SoR2 was on that and the list needs updating...

Fired this up for the first time and finished it with Axel no issues.

It's great. Best side scrolling beat em up ever? Maybe. I have a soft spot for Captain Commando.

One point: Galcia is just a fudged up name and he should have really been ‘Garcia’ if only the developers had been more confident around their use of L and R, right?

Pretty weird that it’s persisted all the way into 2020.

Just a reminder that jumping up without attacking gives you invincibility frames.

Makes dealing with a lot of enemies much easier.

The key is using the defensive special on time and countering to get your health back.

I think in a month's time we will see plenty of people completing this without taking a hit.
