Streets of Rage IV - Survival Mode DLC and Anniversary Editions Out Now

Finished the first play through. Thoughts:

Really good for the most part. The difficulties busted for solo players which is a shame, normal felt like the other games' hard mode and enemies have far far too many moves that just override what you're doing and hit you anyway. For example I'm punching a guy, one of his friends tries to come behind me so I hit the back attack to knock him out. The guy in front always hits first now, making the back attack spectacularly redundant. The last couple of levels were pure frustration. Those fat motorcycle girls are one of the all time shite enemies.

Apart from the above, the combat feels great, especially early on. The flow of the stages is good, personally I thought it all came together in chapter 6: Chinatown. That part had the best graphics, the best boss, the best music, it's fucking glorious.

The last level was really dissapointing. The sense of escalation from the OG trilogy was completely absent and the game veered hard into anime wank territory. Castles? Sword fights? Mechanical spiders? Mr X was the baddest boss in 16bit for me, theres no way these are his kids.. What a pair of losers.

Also - sad they went to all the effort to redraw Max, and he's not playable! [/spoiler]

Overall a good 7 on first playthrough. I'll see how I feel with the retro music for the next one.

Glad other people have mentioned the lack of the original stage clear theme. I'm generally really happy with the soundtrack, and as John Linnemann notes in the DF video, particularly relieved they didn't lean on lazy synthwave for a cheap retro vibe, but it's too ingrained in me to expect the OG tune after downing a boss.

Feels a bit deflating without it.

Does it not play if you turn on the retro music?

Just sing it yourself. It's why god gave us all lungs.

This is just lovely. Looks delightful and the soundtrack is a dream. I was a bit cross about the amount of super-armour around but you have so many more tools now I guess it's only fair the bad guys get a bit of a leg up in places.

Cherry feels like the pick of the starting four for me, she can do some lovely side-switching stuff off the jumping down attack that completely wrecks the riot shield guys. And clearly loads of juggle/wall-bounce shenanigans just waiting to be optimised. Beautiful.

Maybe, but it would've been nice to have a sparkly new version. The one they've gone with is a bit too understated for my liking.

To be fair, even the Switch version in 1080p looks amazing on my 4K LG OLED.

Agreed, those chunky sprites fill up my 55 inch OLED in a very satisfying way - no need to sit within spitting distance of an old CRT like the original games.

Nope and it's bullllllllshit. Now the retro characters use classic sfx, and they are in the game, so hopefully they might patch it in. SoR4 Blaze is my fave of the lot, so I'd like to play as her but with 2's superlative sound fx. I think I've figured out what's off with Axel - it's those jack ups

Grabbing two knuckleheads and bashing them together as Floyd is just... *chef’s kiss*

I think where this game really proves itself - really shows that the devs know what they’re doing - is in introducing new characters with distinct styles of combat and them being as easy to use as tried-and-true Axel or Blaze.

Played this for 10mins on Switch in handheld and it's great, really feels like the logical evolution of 2, which pleases me greatly :D

Also the animation and visuals seem much better when playing compared to all the promo videos, they made it look a bit like Flash animation/not enough frames but it's Super impressive. I don't feel the need to change the screen filters or want to use the old characters.

Got to stage 6 with my daughter. Work and school work have meant not as long on this as we would have liked but it's really good. She was wanting "one more game" when I put it off which is a good review from her!

For anyone else struggling with overly dark stages there is a handy luminosity setting that you can adjust in the options :)

It's a great game, but good lord am I terrible at it! I feel like Normal is a bit misleading  Got to the last chapter after about 3 continues but had to tap out for a while after getting knocked about by gun men with super armour. Don't think i'm ever going to see an A rank at this point but i'll keep at it!

Definitely a special moment when that certain music kicks in on one of the levels for a short time.

Loving it so far, but i wished they used higher resolution artwork..

Is there no higher resolution support for the pro / x / pc? That’s pretty lazy.

My only (very minor) complaint so far is the new Barbon design - he's too small and slim! He should be a big hulking bloke.

Aside from that, this is great - muddled my way to the end of stage 6 on normal (with +1 life) just to try the characters out. Wasn't really liking Floyd (I'm an old school Max diehard) until I discovered his air jump and now I'm leaping around like a loon. Cherry seems super fun too, looking forward to trying out more of her.

It does seem pretty hard so far! Stage 2 boss wiped the floor with me for ages, I just couldn't work out how to counter his dashes. The taser policemen can do one as well.
