Streets of Rage IV - PS4 / XB1 / PC / Switch - Out Now!

I'm loving this. Spent a while doing local 2 player stuff too. Great stuff.

If I die on a level I dont mind replaying it as you do learn stuff each time through.

Havent resorted to using the handicaps.

Yeah - it feels like the game makes it's own rules on the fly at the moment. Going to take off my high score compulsion and just concentrate on getting through.

For all my nitpicks, I can't bloody stop playing it. When everything's going well and the gameplay, visuals and music come together it's euphoric. Definitely worthy of the name

I'd love to see them tackle Shinobi or Comix Zone

It's an amazing, wonderfully playable game. It's just that their combo mastery aspirations are undercut by the balance being off. Feels great busting out a 70+ hit combo, less so when you're locked into an animation and unable to perform the attack you need to escape a jab from the back, or when several enemies launch super armor attacks as you're comboing into their pals.

When I knock the motorcycle girl down, I pick up a hammer and smack her over the head with it but she's got armour and doesn't flinch. She's not attacking, not charging, just backing off. So why she got armour for?

I'm swinging like mad because that weapon should stun lock her rather than knock her down but it did neither

Those are probably my most hated enemies in the game due to the combination of the armour and the charge attack that sometimes comes from off screen with little warning, which is annoying when your swarmed by mobs that you end up grabbing and you cant let go, so cant avoid said charge.

I love this game so much and my daughter seems to be enjoying it as much as me. We finished it on normal and immediately started again. This game is everything I wanted it to be. Only minor quibble is the use of the 8bit tunes on the retro soundtrack. Would rather they kept it to all the 16 bit stuff. Having said that the new soundtrack is amazing. Had it playing on Spotify earlier and it's so good!

Also hate enemies moving vertically during jumps when the player doesn’t have that level of control.

All the stuff @Down by Law has said plus this; the enemies' abilities to hit you when they aren't on the same plane as you is annoying.

Anyway, just finished this (on Easy, because I suck at games, so a lot of the nuance of the systems they've put in place didn't impact me). It was enjoyable enough but still hate the art style, I think it's really ugly. Mostly used Floyd, though his slow lumbering around made the last few boss fights a bit longer than they needed to be. It's the best beat-em-up I've played in the last few years, but that doesn't say anything really as I've played some trash.

Not as good as Target Renegade. :)

Found a bit of useful tech last night - when vaulting over an enemy, mid vault press jump again to let go and get some airtime. Really useful against the girls that throw the vials as they drop them when you grab them. This will get you out of harms way quickly

You know what, this game has really shown me how bad i've gotten at games. Even easy has no chill and I just get frustrated about getting knocked about by super armoured enemies and my reactions just don't allow me to process the right counters in time. Don't regret buying it, it's a brilliant game and deserves support, but it's definitely a wake up call that this sort of game isn't for me any more and that really sucks :(

Yeah, that's even more hilarious if you're playing as Cherry, as there's little more enjoyable than grabbing someone, climbing onto their shoulders to pummel them for a bit (her equivalent of vaulting) , then leaping from them before you reach the punchbag limit at which point, depending on the situation, you can continue your combo by bouncing from other enemies, by landing straight onto a new pair of shoulders, or by diving punch straight back into the original grabee.

Very enjoyable; she's definitely the airtime champion.

I love the fact you can just leave the cops to beat the crap out the enemy's before they turn there attention to you.

Worth trying to save some health.

Am I missing something or is

Spoiler

Max

a massive difficulty spike? I've blitzed pretty much every other boss first try, but this guy appears to have no weaknesses, to the point I thought maybe I wasn't supposed to tackle him head on and instead there might be a way to break the mind control. Are you really expected to just chip away it him with quick hit and runs?

Cheers! My old sor2 muscle memory keeps kicking in and obviously didn't work. Hopefully I can retrain my reflexes for this!

I seem to remember he telegraphs all of his moves with long wind up animations, so just hit a few times and back off at the right moments, obviously it's much harder near the end of the fight when he's in rage mode.

I always press up and jump, which is instinctively ingrained still from SoR2, and that works. Didn't know down was also an option.

I've been trying that and can't get it to work. That's on the default controls. Are you using legacy?

I do up+jump, but muscle memory sometimes means I hit the 'pick up' button instead (which feels like where the C button would be on a megadrive controller).

I'm loving this and it's rock hard, but I'm really feeling the lack of a dash move for most of the characters, as well as the inability to roll up and down the screen - it feels like a bit of a downgrade after 3. There's less versatility with the weapons than in 3 or the Remake as well.

Also my left thumb is utterly fucked! Bloody joycons!

This is correct, same button combo as always.

I think it's just jump on its own, to be honest. Will retest later, but fairly confident I've had the joystick in all kindsa positions and it's not mattered.

No, I'm using the new ones.

The only thing I've changed is removing star attack to R1, because I kept triggering it accidentally.

Yep, it's jump alone.

And you can just hold it until you land, no need for tricky timing.

Only had a few quick blasts on this, but absolutely loving it. It's properly squeezing my nostalgia glands. Although I do wish it played the old level complete jingle.

Im finding it quite difficult though, level 7 boss

Spoiler

Estel and commissioner

can shit the fuck off.

Yeah, he seems really tricky at first but is very do-able one you adjust your play style a little bit. I really struggled with him on my first Normal run but breezed past him just now on Hard.

But yep, you're right - don't try anything fancy. No long combos, no stun locks, no throws. Get some solid hits in and then get out of range. His attacks are generally easy to dodge provided you just stay a decent distance away and on a different vertical plane. You can button mash out if his grab if you're quick too.

I do have one minor niggle, the character design of the Y twins. Everything else is so heavily rooted in 90s action archetypes but when you get to the final two they're full on anime and don't really fit aesthetically. Felt similar about the DJ boss, he was more Scott Pilgrim than Streets of Rage.

I really enjoyed flicking through the artwork in the extras menu and seeing the evolution of most characters, but they only had the final designs for those two which is a shame.

The whole last stage veers too far from the path IMO, way too anime inspired.  The only really disappointing stage, though I've got to be honest when I saw Axel get on that motorbike I thought we were finally going to get some of that motorbike action that was cut from 3 :(

I haven't played this game. It might be terrible for all I know, but goddamn is it gorgeous. Just something about the art style which I totally dig. Reminds me of the equally gorgeous Wonderboy, that kind of comicbookish illustrated style.

They're in the bomber games remake if you get hold of that.

I mean it's not as if there is any evidence that currently points to it being very much the opposite of terrible...

I’ll let you in on a secret - it’s dead good. :D

Played online with my bestie earlier, a bit stuttery but completely enjoyable, much better than playing alone.
