This is really bloody great. What an episode!

So many feels, and a proper mystery/some actual threat.

I have an idea about what's happened, if you think about it - it's kinda obvious.

I won't share it even in spoiler as it would be too easy to read. I'll loop back once more is revealed! It works though if they've gone that path.

My wife isn’t happy - this is on a sub subscription on Amazon now? Paramount +? That the same for everyone else?

I think this a cheeky move.

If you have P+ you can get it a day earlier, but you'll still get it if you wait til Friday.

Popping it up as available and then seemingly locking to P+ has surely driven a few new subscriptions.

It's probably not an intentional gotcha, as such. Paramount+ is available through Prime Video as a subs channel, and doesn't have separate listings to other Prime content so it just showed up when it was available. It would be nice if Amazon could add in a little "coming to Prime on Friday" note mind.

I quite enjoyed the episode. It still had a couple of daft moments, but they were very minor and didn't detract from the rest.

Spoiler

I'm glad we're sticking around with Shaw, who's continued to grow on me.

Changelings infiltrating Starfleet has kind of been done already, but it does seem like this is something more.

Actually there was one very silly bit. The two changelings escorting Ro should really have just shot her, or at least set a much shorter countdown on their bomb. Instead, they gave Ro absolutely ages to contact the Titan and explain everything, and indeed attack the Intrepid while she was at it. I get that it was necessary for to move the plot along, but I'm sure it could have been handled better than that. In the words of Shaw though, "whatever".

So happy to see

Spoiler

Ro back but really not happy to see her die. You can't just waste Michelle Forbes like that.

Morn and Okona were on that list too.

The blood taken from the changling had no DNA or did I mishear?

Because it so - you have a simple way to work out who is real or not.

Wait 9 months?

One small uniform thing:

Spoiler

Has anyone else in the series had Ro's uniform variant? I really prefer it to the wraparound tunic most of them are wearing. It looks like a two-piece, jacketed version of the DS9-era uniform.

That one was great - best so far. Yes not as good as old TNG but that is a different show from 30 yrs ago made in a different time with different production values and audience expectations and pacing etc.

This is the nearest we are going to get and I loved it

Spoiler

Ro fucking Laren!

Loved the pacing of this which felt more like TNG, lots of talky scenes  lots of intrigue and back and forth. The scenes between Picard and Ro are just turning the subtext of their relationship back in TNG into text and spelling it all out but even so it was made with heart.

The Jack/Red Door stuff is the worst part and I am concerned it will give us the downside to the season with a poor reveal and twist.

The first two seasons I heard the complaint, rightly, that it seemed none of the writers had watched TNG.

You can't say that about season 3. It is a love letter to TNG written by people not as talented as those who made TNG. Initially I watched it hoping it might hang together enough to be able to enjoy a shambolic send off for the TNG crew. Each episode I was thinking don't fuck it up like S1 and S2. Now I'm, looking forward to each episode (and yes still thinking don't fuck it up but that part is quieter :D )

This season reminds me of the Undiscovered Country. The actors are too old, its been too many years, it doesn't feel quite right, the Captain is played by an actor who is desperate to be younger and the whole thing creaks but it is the fucking Enterprise crew on one last mission dammit! I love the film but it isn't a patch on original trek or Wrath of Khan.

:D

Well, episode 5 had me go from 'it's not as shit as season 1&2', to actually enjoying it, and now looking forward to episode 6.

@layten probably needs to change the thread title back too '..... it's not shit!' or whatever it was.

Is... Is this good now? Is Picard a good show?

Well, for every two shite bits there's one good bit now.

Stewart is still single-handedly retroactively ruining the character.

Remember when women couldn't be with Picard 'cos he was too much of a rebellious rebel who rebelliously rebelled all the time? Constantly getting into fights and scrapes with gangs of toughs? Stewart does, somehow.

Stewart has reenvisioned Picard as Gareth Marenghi - good friends with Will Riker, though they sometimes have punch-ups.

Jonathan Frakes remains the MVP, as ever. His easy charm is a salve over the whole affair.

Well, I’m actually enjoying this season a lot. Todd Stashwick’s Captain Shaw is becoming a favourite, and watching Frakes and the rest of the returning old guard is like meeting up with a group of good friends you haven’t seen for a long time. Jeri Ryan seems to have remembered how to play Seven. Patrick Stewart ? It’s a little painful watching his age get the better of him.

But I’m liking the main storyline so far. Not sure about Jack’s plot line, but he’s not as annoying as I thought he’d be after ep 1. Would love to see a series with Shaw and Seven on the Titan.

I’m going to check the credits and see if Seth McFarlane’s Orville team are doing some moonlighting.

This is where I am, I can't believe after Season 2 I'd be back watching this show and enjoying it. Frakes is just awesome isn't he.

This will never beat peak TNG but that's a show that could never be made today. There's a lot of love for TNG being poured into it by the new showrunner, hand him the keys to a Captain Shaw series if he can stick the landing.

Seriously enjoying this show now after the misery of the last 2 seasons, it feels like an elongated TNG movie at times.

Nah even if it all falls apart in the second half of the season, we'll always have Shaw who is my favourite new Trek character in many many years.

My take on Jack Crusher for what it's worth is:

Spoiler

Picard will not be his father, but a Changeling who was posing as Picard.
