This, a million times this. They were either to afraid of messing up when going further into the timeline, too lazy to think of something new, or they were playing it as safe as possible by sticking to existing, proven stories. Probably a combination of all three things together. It was causing Stale Trek. But now! Finally going where no Trek has gone before! And Picard is coming with us :omg:

Will be interesting to see what happened with the Alpha Quadrant as a result of the Dominion War and all that stuff, although thinking about it, that was absent from the films that must’ve run on a parallel timeline.

Apart from Worf commanding the Defiant...

 

The films and TV have always been kept a bit separate.

And most irritatingly because Discovery would have fitted, with only minimal changes needed, a post TNG time line much better than it is currently fitting a pre TOS timeline. As it is it is trying to fill in an existing period which really didn't need filling in.

Insurrection referenced the war. They don't really need to mention it unless they want though. After the war ended, its completely plausible that a few years later things are broadly back to status quo. Apparently this is set 20 years on from Nemesis anyway.

Hmm?

 

Apart from the new ones, the films are totally in the same timeline as the series aren't they? (Ignoring some dodgy warp numbers of course)

 

As others have mentioned it's one of the reasons I'm excited for this new Picard show, carrying on the proper Star Trek universe. They've exhausted the alternate timeline/prequel stuff now. It's too late, I've seen everything.

I totally misread the news article thinking he was somehow reprising his role in Discovery. 

 

If it’s post TNG, he’ll be in it as much as he was in DS9. Simply due to the old guy’s age.

That’s what I mean mate, they barely mentioned the war at all in the films, even though a couple of them happened while the war was happening. I know Worf turned up on Defiant in First Contact, but that was a call to defend Earth from the Borg (and a way of getting him back on the Enterprise).

 

@McCoy, I’ve mostly blanked Insurrection from my memory - can’t remember the war reference at all !

 

Just wondering whether they might include some sort of post-war political shift. But since it’s twenty odd years after Nemesis, I guess anything like that would be dealt with much like the peace treaty between the Federation and the Klingons in TNG, as a bit of historical exposition.

People joke about the Patrick Stewart ageless thing, but having just watched the announcement that is one 78 year old I'm not worried about dying anytime in the next 7 TV seasons.

From memory, two slight references.  At the start they are inviting the new race into the Federation and Picard mentions it is happening quickly and I think he mentions this is because the Federation is trying to rebuild.  Later, the bag guy references conflicts with the Borg and the Dominion as evidence that people are seeing weakness in the Federation. 

 

So nothing major, but clearly the same timeline. Whilst Romulus should be destroyed in the new series, would anyone really mind if we just cart the Abrams movies off to their own little corner of continuity. Always seemed a shame to destroy Romulus and just have it as a bulletpoint in a movie when it should have been the focus of a story if you are going to do it.  Nero was pissed off because Romulus had been destroyed but it literally could have been any other planet, including an entirely new one.  It is not like Nero looks or acts like any Romulan seen before.

Clearly Romulus being destroyed will result in lots of refugees flooding into the Federation, leading to small-minded prejudice against illegal aliens mushrooming on Earth, resulting in it leaving the Federation and closing its borders. Star Trek: Picard will be set in the aftermath.

 

Also, surely every actor that was ever in TNG, DS9 and Voyager will be queuing up to reprise their roles in this?
