Yes. The Last Jedi is perhaps the only Star Wars movie that borders on being an actual film. It's good to be able to actually have a discussion about thematic elements within a film that hold up a mirror to the real world. Even though my age addled brain would obviously say that Empire is the best entry, it's Last Jedi  that is by far the smartest of the bunch.

I am sick of people saying that Last Jedi put JJ in a box and it's that films fault that Rise sucked so much. There was only nowhere to go if you lack any form of imagination whatsoever because it truly opened up the main Skywalker story line to a wider universe.

You are right, except there was nowhere to go - because Disney wanted to wrap up the story in one more film - and perhaps the last chapter is not the best place to reset the rules of everything that has come before. Especially when you have no real plan of what comes next in your final film. Very, very messy.

The context of something is everything. And if Disney had done this in a “Star Wars Story”  they would have had a much better reception to Rian’s choices imo - as it would show where the whole thing could go after the Skywalker Saga had ended ... rather render than it meaningless.

I did wonder why there was so much fuss about the dagger plot vin RoS when AotC already did a similarly ludicrous chain of events with the hyperdart, where an assassin was hired to kill the first assassin (who failed due to using a slow and incredibly complicated method involving inserting a robot into the room that deployed some worms, rather than just sticking a gun on that robot, or a bomb), leaving an essential clue that could be traced back to them by use of a bloke in a 1950s diner who knew all about it even though it was deleted from the archives.

Don't forget the supposedly heroic admirable character of Padme getting some poor girl murdered because she happily uses commoners as decoys in the style of Saddam Hussein.

AOTC is fucking just awful.

Yes, the poison dart who dunnit quest is the most boring, tedious, and ridiculous thing ever. Who can forget the high drama of someone deleting the planet from the Jedi Star Map archives.

Jedi Master Sifo Dyas, what who? What’s going on? Is this info spliced off for other media spin offs?

Why does Jango Fett take his helmet off at every opportunity  if he’s a Mandalorian?

The thing with Attack of the Clones, is that badness covers more badness. I don’t think I ever noticed this is what’s actually going on in the plot, I was too preoccupied with how awful the set design, acting, dialogue, and CGI was.

He was the mandalore? I thought he was a simple man trying to make his way in the universe!

Sure had me fooled!

This is the thing, is he? Isn’t he? Is Bobba Fett? They both just happen to wear stolen Mandalorian armour AND are also bounty hunters?

it’s digging into  Wookipedia levels on confusing.

This confuses what good cinema is, I think. Empire is such a tightly wound piece of cinema. It starts with everyone together, splits them up and brings it all back perfectly. The timing of its reveals is perfect, it's brilliantly shot and it never fucks up the tone, even in moments of levity. The Last Jedi is a mess in comparison.

And for all that, The Last Jedi's themes are superficial. And I'm not sure it really gets Star Wars, either. It's goodies and baddies - the Empire isiterally Space Nazis, and the Dark Side is menace just by existing. "Ooohhh we need to have something in the middle and stop fighting " has always been a shit idea, even Rebels abandoned it. At least RoS avoided that particular trap.

Watched this for the first time today having missed it at the cinema (I’ve seen every other one on release at the cinema). Clearly not of the quality of the The Last Jedi but I got enough enjoyment from it. I’ll say one thing, Adam Driver is a fantastic actor, I loved every scene with him in, and got a little chill with one that referenced my favourite scene from The Last Jedi.

Just watching this for the second time after seeing it at the cinema.

It really does feel like the first film in a new trilogy, it barely makes any mention to the previous films and feels completely different. The whole story setup of Palpatine’s Final Order just doesn’t feel like the final chapter in a trilogy. And the whole searching for a Maguffin makes it fee more like an Indiana Jones film. Well, maybe more like a Mummy film.....

He ain’t though @Kevvy Metal. They address that in Clone Wars; Obi-Wan mentions him to the Prime Minister of Mandalore and he says something along the lines of “He’s

not a Mandalorian, and I’ve no idea where he got that armour.”

@Rubber_JohnnyIt’s even worse than that - why bother with a robot containing wormy things, or even with guns attached, when you’re sitting on a hoverbike at an unguarded window you’ve just cut a hole in. Just poke a bloody gun through the hole, shoot her and leg it. The Jedi don’t even sense the danger until the worms are about to kill her, so she’d have got away easily.

Does it not bug the shit out of anyone else that Palpatine was never called Palpatine in the original trilogy, so why the fuck's he called it here?

He was just The Emperor and is credited as such.

It wasn't until the prequels that he became Palpatine, which is his fucking cover story and Darth Sidious is his real identity.

He had that name before the first movie even came out, in the novelisation. Then on merchandise.

Darth Sidious isn't his real identity any more than Darth Vader is Anakin Skywalkers real identity.

Yeah, in the films it wasn’t until TPM that the name Palpatine was mentioned, but the original novel (which is somewhere in my loft) has it here

Quote

Aided and abetted by restless, power-hungry individuals within the government, and the massive organs of commerce, the ambitious Senator Palpatine caused himself to be elected President of the Republic. He promised to reunite the disaffected among the people and to restore the remembered glory of the Republic. Once secure in office he declared himself Emperor, shutting himself away from the populace. Soon he was controlled by the very assistants and boot-lickers he had appointed to high office, and the cries of the people for justice did not reach his ears (George Lucas [Alan Dean Foster], Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker (paperback; New York: Del Rey, 1976), p. 1, ISBN 0-345-26079-1.)

Obviously his backstory was altered to show him as a power hungry Sith Lord instead of a puppet Emperor controlled from the shadows but the seeds were there.

they could drop a wheely bin from orbit and destroy everything within a 2 mile radius, since sensors / orbital defenses don't seem to exist in starwars

That's hilarious. Star Wars constantly coming up with new ways to make the Fetts seem like useless posers.

I just watched this. I can understand why a lot of Star Wars fans didn't like it but it was a solid action/buddy movie with lots of great CGI and it rarely paused for breath. I loved the comedy tiny robot expert "thing" Babu Frik. He was awesome.

It was corny as hell but then Star Wars is.

The plot of this is held together by sticky backed plastic and blue tac, but on a second viewing last night, I really enjoyed it. Yes, if you press too hard, it falls to bits, but, opening few minutes aside, this is thoroughly enjoyable.

Watched it last night for the first time since the cinema and I have to say I still really really enjoy it, it's a great adventure romp and sure it goes at a break-neck pace but I love that it covers so much ground and is, quite frankly also completely bananas :D
