Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (December 2019)

With how this trilogy has gone so far, all I really want from this film is for Palpatine to turn to Rey and say, ‘Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise?’ before turning to the camera to give his best Dr Evil impression.

Me too, though I kinda wished Rian made the third one as well. TLJ is awesome and I don't care what the haters say.

It's a good film but as a sequel to the Force Awakens it's completely out of place.  I'd much rather they'd made three fun romps and then let Johnson make his own self-enclosed pair or trilogy of films.  As it is this trilogy is already tonally all over the place, the plot strands set up in TFA have gone nowhere, and there's nothing really particularly compelling that the third film needs to provide a payoff for.  The film that TLJ makes you think is going to happen but then subverts would actually have been a much better fit than the film he made.

Can you remind us again whether you think JJ Abrams has a tendency to recycle things? I'm not sure if you've made it clear enough in the half a billion posts saying exactly that across every single thread that has anything to do with star wars on here. I feel like another few posts could just remove those last slivers of doubt that remain in anyone's mind.

God, nothing like Star Wars fans to completely destroy excitement for a Star Wars movie...

Come on now, the spirit of the forum is to light-heartedly take the piss out of everything.

I couldn’t be more excited about seeing Episode IX. I’ll be there, opening day, centre back row at the IMAX. Haven’t been this excited since TLJ, and before that TFA. The new trilogy has been a little wonky in places, but in general it’s been excellent, and far better than the prequels in every way imaginable.

Eh? Hardly.

I've mentioned it maybe twice ever. A tad oversensitive, perhaps.

I'm massively looking forwards to this too, and I want to be surprised again - like I was with TLJ - when I see it in December.

I recently watched TFA directly into TLJ for the first time and it was an interesting experience on how the two films feel quite different even though it's a direct sequence.

Feel different in a good way I might add, with TFA being a very kinetically directed film from a visual stand point, but with some really clunky dialog to the complete opposite with TLJ, which is far better written - with much better characterisation and dialog between characters - but far more plainly directed from a visual standpoint (with the exception of a few key scenes like the hyper-space ramming).

I hope this new one can land both and be a rising finale to it all.

It feels like a lot more when everyone’s excitedly looking forward to something, and then one person barrels in repeatedly firing off one liners about how it’s actually going to be shit.

After TLJ I am looking forward to how they finish the story up for this trilogy. Some specific points I would love to be wrapped up or clarified:

• Rey's background. TLJ's "she is just a nobody" was just a ruse, she is far too skilled and powerful.

• Who the fuck are the knights of Ren and how did Ben Skywalker come to lead them? (some Sith wannabes most likely)

• Who or what was Snoke and how did he end up recruiting Ben/Kylo? I know he was killed rather easily in TLJ but he was in charge of the new Empire so must have some intersting backstory

• Just how big is the First Order? I struggle to believe it can be as big as the Empire was otherwise how did it coexist with the new Republic

• The Resistance, basically a shit version of the Rebellion. It's pretty much dead after the events of TLJ and I dont know what Leia's role will be going forward.

• Luke's role going into Episode IX. I did really enjoy the few interactions we had between Rey and grumpy old Luke in TLJ (and kinda wished they had spent more time on this plot than the pointless casino planet stuff). Would be cool to see him mentoring Rey a little more, even in force ghost form.

• What is the state of the wider galaxy following the destruction of the New Republic government in TFA, are the First Order now in charge?

I probably have more questions and, no doubt, some of this might have already been cleared up in books/comics but I have struggled to adapt to the new "expanded universe" that Disney has created with these films.

Once you've killed your dad, tried to.murder your mum and your uncle while systematically killing of all their friends...It's a long road back to good guy.

Like Darth Vader? He doesn't have to survive but I think Rey has to be given more texture before things wrap up.

I think I can see where they might go plot-wise that would tie into TFA and make more sense of Rey's character.
