The films are flawed sure, lazy JJ syndrome relying far too heavily on Star Wars tropes and grandstanding events which have no significant impact or meaning. Then wackadoo TLJ which does completely the opposite and subverts expectation, not entirely successfully. Plus BB8 in a walker.

 

But still I’ve found these new films a triumph. They look right and feel right. There’s a sense of a loveable gang going on adventures that was sorely lacking from Solo, and completely absent from the Prequels. Plus the return of the old cast is just pure childhood wish-fulfilment including puppet Yoda, once again acting Mark Hamill off the screen. Most importantly when I left the cinema both times, despite the evident flaws, I felt mildly euphoric rather than depressed, angry or bored. Could be a popcorn sugar rush, but don’t think so. And they also open up the Universe as well as revive it.

 

The new trailer gave me tingles and made me well up a bit and I can’t wait to go book my iMax tickets at the Science Museum again, just like I did for the last two.

Rian single handedly ruined the franchise and screwed Solo.

 

Now the dust has settled, most see Solo for what it is. A solid action romp in the style of Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull.

I went into Solo with extremely low expectations and was therefore pleasantly surprised. Granted its no Rogue One but (dare I say it) I enjoyed it more than the Last Jedi.

 

Looking forward to getting some more information on the Knights of Ren in episode 9.

JJ Abrams serves up some remixed form of a familiar visual in tarted-up modern style. 

In this case the most striking visual from the original trilogy remixed with new characters literally being watched by the Emperor.

Hugely reassuring to folk who want to see the same stuff over and over and over again.
