Yeah, I’ve repeatedly said that people are entitled to their own opinion. I’ve never refuted that.

And yeah, the idea that they had no plan whatsoever is totally clutching at straws in my opinion, it’s pretty ridiculous in my opinion, but people are entitled to think that if they like.

The flat earther thing was a wee joke. I guess some people are a little sensitive.

Do you wish for for me to go away so all those who dislike TLJ can express their dislike in peace?

Also, it’s you being aggressive here.

No, stay. I like hearing your opinion on things. Keep it neutral though, there’s no need to insult people just because they’ve got a different opinion to you.

I can’t wait to see what you think of Episode IX. It’s always good to hear the opinion of people who love something.

Not sure how anyone can think Disney had a plan for this trilogy - when its been the MOST open of secrets that they had nothing (except for release dates).

Hence the various members of the cast, and Ryan Johnson saying as much, as well as JJ saying he had to start from scratch with Episode 9. And its the single biggest problem with this trilogy.

Here is an extract of his Fast Company interview from this month about taking over Episode 9 from Colin Trevorrow:

Quote

FC: What were the time constraints?

Abrams: Because Disney had announced release dates, and everything works backwards.

FC: Was the schedule unusually fast?

Abrams: To have no script and to have a release date and have it be essentially a two-year window when you’re saying (to yourself), you’ve got two years from the decision to do it to release, and you have literally nothing . . . . You don’t have the story, you don’t have the cast, you don’t have the designers, the sets. There was a crew, and there were things that will be worked on for the version that preceded ours, but this was starting over. And because this was such a mega job, I knew at the very least I needed a cowriter to work on this thing, but I didn’t know who that cowriter would be. There was nothing. So the first thing I did was reach out to a writer who I’ve admired for years, Chris Terrio. who I didn’t really know, to say, “Listen, would you want to write Star Warswith me?” And he screamed.

But it was a completely unknown scenario. I had some gut instincts about where the story would have gone. But without getting in the weeds on episode eight, that was a story that Rian wrote and was telling based on seven before we met. So he was taking the thing in another direction. So we also had to respond to Episode VIII. So our movie was not just following what we had started, it was following what we had started and then had been advanced by someone else. So there was that, and, finally, it was resolving nine movies. While there are some threads of larger ideas and some big picture things that had been conceived decades ago and a lot of ideas that Lawrence Kasdan and I had when we were doing Episode VII, the lack of absolute inevitability, the lack of a complete structure for this thing, given the way it was being run was an enormous challenge.

Of course these facts won't mean much to people like @KevvyMetal.

Now they have gone back to development rather than hitting deadlines, I'm sure these films will get better. Its just a shame they had to rush this trilogy at the expense of its story.

I still think all these problems aren't Rian Johnson or TLJ's fault. Of the two movies so far, I'd rather have had a whole trilogy by Rian than JJ.

Although I think the huge amount of fan service is what makes the more money, even if it's dull.

I agree, and as much as I don't like TLJ - I don't think it's that film's fault, or Ryan's fault either.

Its Disney's. The buck stops there.

They announced the release date of Episode 7 before the ink was even dry on the contract. With no director. No working script. And no plan. George (and his treatments) were almost immediately thrown under the bus - and the shareholders needed to see a product. Quality was secondary to getting, something, anything made. And lots of it.

Star Wars was the saga that started huge epic, multi-film narratives. Every huge budget film series that came after it owes it a debt. So that Disney pushed on with no one running the show, or a singular vision of what this new series of films should be - is a crime against the history of cinema (well almost!).

I imagine lots will be written about this period of Disney, and the internal politics that created this mess.

You’re right, it’s not Rian Johnson’s or JJ Abrams fault, it’s Disney’s, as @Dirty Harry Pottersays. Each film has its own merits and problems. Each film has people who like it and people who don’t. The big problem is that they just don’t work together. They’re pulling in different directions and that leaves us with an incoherent story, which should have been the trilogy’s driving priority.

I just hope JJ can end it on a satisfactory note, but he’s got his work cut out and I hope Disney now realise they need a well planned story that can span a trilogy, rather than a bunch of set pieces that don’t hang together.

That doesn’t explain why the prequels are infinitely worse and suffered only because Lucas didn’t have a production team willing to stand up to him

If you actually want to tag me for some reason, like some actual discussion then do it properly... otherwise fucking stop this shit, you child.

Insinuating that I’m “Mental” because I like to talk positively about this film does not do many favours for rllmuk reputation as “2nd cuntiest forum ever”. Also feels like you’re edging towards breaking the forum rules there.

On that note, if the mods see another example of that nickname or something similar being used in threads ("typo" or otherwise) then that user will be getting banned.

Argue, agree, disagree, agree to disagree, whatever, but that kind of childish sniping bullshit needs to stop now. Thank you.

This is what I find most bemusing,  I just don't understand why they would not have an Arc for the trilogy plotted out before kicking things off. Well I guess I do actually, its because $$$$$$$

I think they did have an arc but within those parameters the individual writer/directors were free to do what they wanted, so long as they didn’t contradict it or prevent it from being completed (e.g. RJ was free to kill Snoke and Luke but couldn’t have killed off Rey or Ben, because there’s a plan for what happens to them, and in this trilogy Snoke and even Luke are just supporting characters on their journeys).

I really like Bob Chipman, when it comes to Film Critics. He writes film reviews on The Escapist and Geek.com.

With the latest trailer, he touches upon this idea - which I also disagree on - that Lucasfilm had absolutely no plan during the production of these films and were just "winging it". I think it's quite absurd, and I'd imagine a lot of the pieces will fall into place with this 3rd film.

Doesn't look like there's a YouTube link, so that links the best you get.

What makes you so sure they had a plan?

I mean, as Darren mentioned, I'm pretty sure they had a few key plot points down and a conclusion in mind, but it absolutely feels like they're making this shit up as they go. To me, it doesn't feel like there was a bigger structure in place that moved the narrative along. They just let each director go in whatever direction they wanted.

Maybe I'm completely wrong and I doubt we'll ever find out for sure, but there are bits of info floating around (things like what you've posted above and the JJ quotes dirtyharrypotter posted last night) that all point to that being how it is.

I just wondered why you seemed so adamant that's all nonsense.

Obviously I hope it all falls into place in the last film, but its been such a disjointed story so far that I feel like I've been dragged all over the place without anything actually moving forward all that much, that I'm not sure how JJ will nail it.
