Cardiacs - the best/worst band in the world ever

The sustained vocal note from about 6:30 onwards? Mental innit. It's almost daring the listener to flinch first.

I haven't found a Cardiacs album, or indeed song, that I haven't liked yet. However, the pre-1991 band is a bit different in flavour. On Land and in The Sea is my favourite by the original line up, Sing to God seems to be the best by the Jon Poole on guitar line up.

Nah, it's ok. It just takes the shine off having Bastion's comments stinking up the thread. And my opening post was more eye-catching. But no, tis fine.

Good work Staplehead. The Tarred and Feathered video, and of course the song, is incredibly addictive. It cheers me up instantly whenever I watch it. I've even been trying to learn it on the keyboard. I can play about a tenth of the main riff, which is a ridiculous 17 bars long!

Edit: The live version is amazing too:

It's really good, my favourite stuff being the first 2 and last 2 tracks. I find myself playing bits of songs in my head when I'm not listening to it, which brings a unique atmosphere to Dark Souls, as I pick my way through Blighttown singing 'little glad laughing makes a prickly noise, but when with the boys he breaks his toyyyyyss.'

EDIT: Just listened to All Spectacular and realised that it's some sort of pirate/viking funeral song, but one of those joyful ones with huge foaming beer steins and campfires.

This is the best thread.

Sadly Tim Smith had a stroke in 2008 and is still recuperating. Hope he gets better and one day makes music again. It would be awful for him to only be recognised as the genius he is after it's too late.

Heart attack, wasn't it? At a MBV gig. I can't listen to them (MBV) now without a little South Park "oh my god, you killed Tim" moment.

Here's a Guns video for those who haven't got it yet.

And Fiery Gun Hand from the same show (and the OP). I love the duelling guitars opening.

Excellent. Maybe you should "Sing of his life!" every time you get killed in Dark Souls.

You should get the 'A Little Man and a House' and 'On Land and in The Sea' albums next for more of the same, then 'The Seaside' for a slightly rougher but still excellent group of songs in the same mould, then skip straight to 'Sing to God'.

Thing is, they rattle off some fairly complex tunes as well, songs like RES which has all sorts of stuff going on, different instrumentation etc, and it's just the four of them, and it doesn't sound lacking in any way. I suppose they had some of it on loops, but still.

And then when it gets to the stoppy bit they really show off!

old hiss poppy cassette tapes.

I'm surprised I still own something working on which to play my collection, but talk about format obsolescence. My first tape was made by a friend from some live gig ("This is called 'Too many irons in the fire'. Because there are too many irons in the fire." I wore out the tape around Gina Lollobrigida because it was such an ace track for getting ready to go out on a Saturday night). My copy of A Little Man And [...] is on vinyl, and served me well for many years by having an inner sleeve that you could blu-tak to a wall as a poster of the iconic b&w flower. My copy of On Land And In The Sea appears on newfangled CD and still works. I fully expect my next purchase to come on crystal shard, for playing in my Fortress of Solitude. And when Spotify appeared, I did my usual test by searching for "Cardiacs".

"Your search did not match anything in our catalogue. Please ensure all words are spelled correctly. You could also try different or simpler searches."

I think I need to take a break from Cardiacs now, as I've listened to nothing else since mid-September. It's just that every time I look for something else to play, I go "Nah, let's have Sing to God again".

The only album I've not been that impressed by is Heaven Born and Ever Bright. It just seems like a bit of a halfway house between On Land and Sing to God, and only Bodysbad and Day is Gone have really stuck in my head.
