Die less, idiot.

I only played it on PC and PS5, I could see it getting annoying if it was much longer.

Load times aren't a problem on Series X, and I assume the other current consoles.

I like the game's setting and ideas, but find it a bit of a chore to actually play. I tend to look for appropriate moments to stop,  so if I die or watch a cutscene or whatever, I turn it off for the day.

Mine frequently hung for 45 seconds on a PS4 pro while loading.

Like "Background stops animating" hung. I reset the game the first couple of times before one where I walked back in while it was doing it and it unfroze as i went for the controller.

Its actually a really good game for playing in small chunks as the save system is very generous.

I love this. Done the main story and the Foundation DLC and found very little to dislike.

Finding myself holding off on the AWE DLC though. I sort of liked Alan Wake, and part of me wishes there was a middle point between looking up the DLC on YouTube and actually playing it. I want to have played it without going through the bother.

How long is it, and should I bother? I've only seen people saying it's a bit pants.

I stopped halfway through AWE. It was spoiling the good impression the main game left on me. I was gagging for more Control after finishing it but playing AWE made me think that I'm good thanks.

The AW easter eggs in the main game are way way cooler and more entertaining than anything in AWE. I youtubed the ending of AWE and even that wasn't really worth it tbh.

Surely the middle point is turning on a load of assists.

And if you do that you might as well run through it.

The AWE DLC is disappointing, but essentially more of the same. I definitely wouldn't do it just after you've finished the main game, but I came back to it after a long-ish break and quite enjoyed it. It squanders its potential, but I thought some of the light/dark setpieces were fun.

If they'd ditched the Alan Wake connection (or at least made it less prominent), I suspect people would think of it more highly. They tease the Bright Falls bit all the way through, and its such a colossal letdown when you finally get to it but without that weight of expectation I think it might have been better received.

I have the ultimate edition. Is the DLC playable at the end or does it bake it into the game somewhere?

The one thing I am struggling with is doing the side stuff as its appearing and I think I would prefer to just do it at the end like Alan Wake.

So did anyone else with a Series X buy the Ultimate Edition in a sale, and then wait for the SX enhanced version to come out, and THEN play the standard edition with no enhancements to completion? No? I did! I had an inkling as I couldn't find the toggle between performance and graphics mode, but to be honest I was enjoying the game so much I didn't really care when I was playing. Even the standard edition is a great looking game. Kind of miffed now though, as I can't play the DLC and tidy up the side missions on the fancy edition. I think I might wait a while and go through it again, I don't really replay games much but this might be worth another go, it's a lot of fun. Maybe i'll understand the ending the second time around.

I did start the fancy one to try the graphics. I found the 60fps a bit unsettling after finishing it in 30. I'm sure i'd get used to it though.

I think you can leave the side stuff until the end? I am, seeing as I've restarted this.

I played through the ultimate edition recently, and the game lets you start the Alan Wake DLC (quite seamlessly) before you reach the end game, but you don't have to do it as soon as it's available. TBH, I quite liked doing it before the end of the game and before the other DLC, as it slotted in quite nicely, aside from the minor bump in difficulty. Sounds like I came away with much better impressions of it than people who played it as it came out, well after finishing the main game and the other DLC. I don't blame them, I'd probably feel similarly if I'd done it in that order.

Yeah the wake DLC doesn't even tell you its DLC I accidentally did it assuming it was story.  I was playing it at the same time as a friend who was playing non-ultimate and I had no idea why she didn't know the bits with the light!

The other DLC spawns post game.

After not claiming this on Plus (don't ask), I finally managed to justify a PS5 purchase of this with it in the sale. After 3 minutes playing on quality mode I switched to performance and have just blasted through it. I had it on PS4 but it's another level with how smooth it is and how great it looks. One of the games of the generation for me.

I don't have high hopes for the DLC but I'm looking forward to it anyway.

For my PS5 play through I blasted straight through the main missions, sticking right to the critical path and the pacing felt just perfect and brilliant. I enjoyed it about 10 times more doing it that way with the new silky smooth frame rate. I loved it enough to platinum it.
It felt best doing all side content in the endgame even if a lot of it was easy

I had the same issue about 14 hours in. Then at hour 16 and making no progress I found the accessibility options that allowed me to change damage and recharge times. It did warn me that the game was balanced for the default settings and that changing them might change the intended experience of playing the game but I tweaked it until I found it fun but still challenging. I'd recommend anyone stuck to do this, it might be the "wrong" way to play the game but I found it a lot more fun.

Holy shit man, thanks! I had absolutely no idea this existed and I'm not a huge shooter man but I was really enjoying the genuinely unsettling and strange atmosphere of this game.

Life saver.

If you're after an easy time the legit way, upgrade launch over anything else, and use your personal mods to boost health. Launch is stupidly powerful at higher levels. For enemies that dodge out of the way of it, Pierce destroys them.

Or just lobbing two items at them, I found you rarely miss twice.

An upgrade to your health regeneration by collecting the little fragments enemies also helps lots

Yeah, hiding these behind what seems like a "You're hacking the game" prompt is a dumb move.

About 10 hours in to this now and it's becoming a bit of a classic. I was a bit non-plussed for the first few hours. The gunplay was fine, the visuals were OK if a bit samey and washed out and the story hinted at being weird for weirds sake nonsense.

Pretty wrong on all accounts there. As you gain all your fancy powers and upgrade your guns and mods, the action becomes incredibly fun and I only wish there was more of it. I've maxed out my Launch abilities and stacked energy mods so I'm now pretty much an Emperor Palpatine level motherfucker.

I love the weirdness of the story now and the many (many!) collectibles flesh out the story nicely and the side missions introduce some barmy concepts. I just fought what appeared to be a

Spoiler

possessed SMEG fridge that manifested as a gigantic worm with laser eyes

:blink2:

The fairly boring office block environments give way to some great visuals as you progress. I've just done the level in the

Spoiler

quarry and gained my levitating powers.

and that was some great environmental design.

If you picked this up on PS Plus, please don't forget to play it, especially if you have a PS5 as it's slick as fuck at 60fps.

I’m loving this too, played it already on PlayStation and now I’m going through it on Xbox. They’re a developer that’s easy to overlook but really they are top tier imo, I love the combat and physics in their games and this is perhaps the best one in that regard. Also the presentation is awesome - the titles and voice overs, the weirdness of it - pitch perfect, and the sound design is absolutely brilliant.

Can’t wait to see what they do next as it must be some way into development by now I’d guess.

They're doing many things: the single player campaign for Crossfire X, a game published by Epic (likely to be Alan Wake 2), a smaller game for Epic, a co-op game called Vanguard and there are rumors of a PlayStation exclusive.

Remedy is eating.

Foundation is pretty good. I wasn't so keen on AWE.

  • 3 weeks later...

Have they added a shitload of Control Points in this to facilitate better fast travel? I've gone back to mop shit up and there's new ones in places I'd abandoned.

Also not that I really want to give 505 more money but the ultimate edition is on sale on Xbox. The saves aren't transferable are they?
