So Halo 5's campaign wasn't perfect obviously. There were several stupid systems and it was built around coop that kinda ruined the single player experience. However there was a really cool verticality to the levels that we'd not seen before. Clambering up to get the drop on your enemies was awesome and it seems like they've run with that with Infinite because... well...

You're bloody fucking Spider-Man. It's so much fun flinging yourself around and grabbing weapons etc. That bit towards the end of the opening mission laid out on two levels was so much fun and I honestly can't see what else they've got in store for us.

I thought the open world would be the biggest new contribution to the series but it's clearly this wonderful, batshit grappling hook!

Yeah that but was ace, and gives an early glimpse of the more open nature of the levels and combat approaches. Feels

really fresh.

I posted about it in the console wars thread to take the piss, and some were saying "it's probably a stylistic choice, it's not even a problem".

If wasn't a problem, MS/343 would not have swiftly got in touch with Digital Foundry to say they're fixing it in a later patch.

I want to play this on PC, but apparently it's a bit of a dog's dinner on that too. I'll wait until it's had a patch or two.

FWIW so far so good on PC. Seems super smooth and looks great.

Downloaded lightning quick for me.

First impressions after an hour or so:

- Grappleshot is a game-changer and completely transforms the way you navigate the combat bowls/arenas. Grabbing weapons and noob cubes from afar, pinging up to ledges and hurtling towards Brutes to deliver a smack to the chops. Great stuff.

- All those many hours of multiplayer this past month have turned me into a rampaging headshot monster. Playing on Heroic (of course) and although it’s very early days I feel every inch the 7-foot space marine annihilating enemy forces. Combat is so slick and polished.

- Graphically much nicer than I was expecting, cutscene quibbles aside. The multiplayer gave us a good idea of what to expect of course but it’s beautifully clean and there’s some really great art direction in the first couple of stages.

- I already have absolutely no idea what’s going on, who these gorillas with terrible teeth are or what the hell they’re yammering on about. But I don’t really care because I’m here for the shooting and it’s fantastic.

- Finally found a use for the Pulse Carbine. It’s fucking useless in multiplayer but melts Jackals and Elites in the campaign.

Very promising start and seems like the year long delay has got it into fine shape. Just hope the open-world aspects hold the attention and maintain the quality but so far it’s very much:

Are you mad? It absolutely MUNCHES through shields in multi. It's basically a plasma pistol you don't have to charge.

To be fair I used it early days and couldn’t get on with it so now will always choose a Battle Rifle or something else over it given the choice. I think it’s mainly because it’s not hitscan and I mostly play BTB on the larger maps where most of my engagements are mid- to long-range where its slowass projectiles are a hindrance. Might give it a whirl again in multiplayer now I’m much better at the game but one thing’s for sure it’s an absolute beast in the campaign.

Just made it to the surface. Have been very impressed by everything I’ve seen so far. Not a huge fan of the grapple yet (I’m rubbish at using it), but had a great time with it all the same.

It feels a lot easier on Heroic than a lot of the previous games. Maybe to encourage more creative play in the open environments, rather than getting bogged down behind some cover.

Pre-surface spoilers:

Spoiler

So, “The Weapon” said something about her impersonating Cortana. I’m guessing she’s either merged with her or that she’s Cortana pretending to be Weapon?

Well that was weird. Finally downloaded everything on PC, booted up the game, opening cutscene fine, then the screen had an on/off blinking effect for some reason, then Master Chief turned invisible whilst his gun was floating about in the cutscene, then cut to gameplay and was not able to move or do anything. Exited to menu, couldn't reload progress, quit game. Xbox app said update available, clicked on it, didn't do anything. Reboot PC, Windows needs an update. Back to Desktop, Xbox app, clicking on Halo Infinite now takes me to Microsoft Store and to Gaming Services.

Edge 10

Tried troubleshooting the issue and gave up. Now downloading 60gb again. :seanr:

I really like the way the Brutes take gunshots like boxers taking punches in the 10th round. Is the 10th round late? I don't know boxing, more of a Halo guy. They take shots hard is what I'm saying.

This is what has struck me on my first play. Every gunshot feels like it hits, which is fantastic. I'm not sure I've seen such dynamic enemy reactions.

The other thing is how good it looks on Series S, very sharp and smooth.

This didn't download in time for me tonight, which is a shame. Ah well. I did the multiplayer tutorial, at least.

Heroic and performance mode is the way to go when I play it tomorrow, right?

If you want 120 fps - quality mode runs at 60.
