Tetris Effect - Mizuguchi does Tetris

Recommended Posts

This looks brilliant. I was a bit concerned by the trailer that it might be hard to focus on the game with all the visual effects going on around you but watching that gameplay video just assuaged those fears. Day 1.

The actual Tetris board seems tiny though.

I thought that at first too but it’s as big as it needs to be really. And means they can fill the surrounding area with trippy shit. I’m all for it.

Pretty sure I once understood Tetris blocks to be known as Tetrads. Fuck knows where from. Perhaps a doss wee magazine that was once sent to me as a kid whenever I joined some sort of official Nintendo fanclub or something.

Watching someone else play Tetris is like nails on a chalkboard.

"Yes! OK. No. NO!

Not there! Yes, that one and then...

WHY!? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!

But you can get out of this mess by turning...

...

ARE YOU INSANE?!"

I will get this on PS4, because Tetris, but I much prefer playing in hanndheld, so hope it gets ported at some point.

After the bloody post-nuclear wasteland that was Tetris Ultimate, I simply need this on PS4. But yes, a Switch version would be appreciated as well.

Ultimate is the one I have on my 3DS, if you turn off all the new rules crap, I think it's OK. But my Gameboy VC version still rocks.

I know @bradigor will ignore me though until I get Puyo Puyo Tetris. Waiting to start a new job, it;s on the payday list.

And I still don't see the hype for this. It looks great, will be fun I'm sure, but I hate the shadow of the piece you will drop.

It's not the new rules that is the issue, I personally like variations of the rulesets.

It's the fact it is still a broken mess with frame-rate drops and massive loads of lag... IN A BLOODY TETRIS GAME!!!

Also, you sound exactly like my partner, who will not play anything other than Gameboy Tetris as that is the only real version! ;)

As I said I like the variations and rulesets, it all depends on how I am playing. So bring on MORE TET-ER-RIS!

It's part of my general bloody mindedness. Rotating when the block has dropped? Saving a block until later? Seeing where it will land? Just WRONG!

But thats just me and if you can turn them off, I'm happy. I think I spent so much time on Gameboy Tetris back in the day it's become the 'real' Tetris for me, but thats as daft as saying Super Mario Bros. is the 'real' Mario platformer and all others are wrong. I'm fickle. Some changes I embrace, some I will decry as the work of the devil. I'll be buying this, I've owned 4 versions of Lumines so far, so who am I trying to kid.

Really reminds me a lot of Lumines, the way the tracks/visuals build up is cool.

That second stage (the monochrome one) is sweet :D I'm really warming to the Rez magic as well - just tie random sound effects to your actions and layer more bits in as the stage continues.

How is 9 lines an "Octotris" and not a "Nonatris" though?

A more expensive than I was expecting but from what I played at EGX it'll be worth every single penny.

Hoping for a physical release as well.

You're in luck - there was actually a big blog update the other day mentioning a physical release:

Quote

So you already know from our E3 announcement that Tetris® Effect is coming to PS4 and (optionally) PSVR, right? And that it’s releasing on November 9th, right?

DIGITAL DISCOUNT
So, yes! First off, digital pre-orders are live on the PlayStation Store as of today (!!), with a special 10% off discount for all digital pre-orders via the U.S. PlayStation Store, and for PS+ members on the European PlayStation Store. (Note: Asia pre-orders start 10/16. Click this link to check your local PlayStation Store.)

LET’S GET PHYSICAL
More good news, for those of you who prefer tangible objects: Tetris Effect is getting a real-deal PS4 physical disc version! That’s right — thanks to our friends at PlayStation, Tetris Effect will be available on the November 9th launch date at retailers all over the world, in pretty much every region Sony covers (Americas, Europe, Asia, and Japan); check out the box art below (feel free to pre-order this as well if you want to make sure you get a copy day 1!)

PRE-ORDER GOODIES
And whether it’s the digital or physical version, everyone who pre-orders Tetris Effect in the Americas and European regions–up until the November 9th launch day, of course–will get codes to download the following goods, absolutely free:

SOUNDTRACK SAMPLER
Seven original .mp3 tracks from the game, including the fan-favorite song “Connected (Yours Forever)” featured in our announcement trailer. (Digital pre-orders via the US PlayStation Store can get and redeem this as soon as their pre-order is confirmed!)

AVATARS
Seven different avatars you can use for your PlayStation Network profile, all based on real in-game avatars you can earn in Tetris Effect by completing various challenges (more on those in the near future).

PS4 DYNAMIC THEME
A custom Tetris Effect PS4 Dynamic Theme that also features the oft-requested “Connected (Yours Forever)” song from our debut trailer, as well as a beautiful recreation of the initial “The Deep” stage from the Tetris Effect game.

WANT TO SEE MORE OF THE GAME FIRST?
Don’t worry, we have lots more to talk Tetris Effect to show and tell you about—over 30 stages and 10 unique modes worth! Keep an eye out for more info and media impressions coming at the end of October, and if you’re still not convinced, more details on where and how you can try the game for yourself as part of our public weekend trial demo…

What do we have here? Stayed tuned to find out...

CATCH US AT THE CLASSIC TETRIS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Speaking of public demos: We’ll be at the CTWC at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo October 20th and 21st with a playable version of Tetris Effect, and if you’re there or you watch our twitter account closely you might catch a livestream or two featuring pro players trying out a never-before-seen mode…
