Hitman 2

A full-blown sequel then? I’d be happy with that after this amount of time. I naively thought that season 2 would follow immediately on from season 1 but that didn’t happen.

I had the impression that Hitman 1 didn't do so well even though it was highly praised? Actually I thought that team was laid off?

Anyway, super excited actually. I loved the idea of what they did with the previous game but for some reason never jumped on it. Then it felt like I was too late to catch up. So starting afresh sounds very appealing to me and will make sure I get onboard asap.

Square Enix got rid of them and they went independent, made a deal with WB to publish the complete season 1, and presumably, this sequel/second season.

They did downsize though, around 50% of the staff if I remember rightly.

Doesn't look like an episodic release this time, hence calling it Hitman 2  rather than season 2. I think that while the approach was well received by the gaming media it affected sales.

Taking out a formula 1 driver is a great set-up for a mission. I was hoping they'd pull back on the 'opulent mansion' set-ups from Season 1 so I'm optimistic now.

Travel the globe and track your targets across exotic sandbox locations in HITMAN 2. From sun-drenched streets to dark and dangerous rainforests, nowhere is safe from the world's most creative assassin, Agent 47.

I really wish they would do a reset, and make Hitman like the few games when it comes to plot. I dont want the storyline to involve anything other than getting paid to assassinate people.

Yeah, whoever at IO honestly believes people care about the overarching storyline is deluded. That said I don't feel like it negatively impacts my experience.

I wouldn't normally go in for an expensive special edition but I've gone for the digital Gold Edition of this. Includes Expansion 1 and 2, Sniper Challenge available now (though I don't know how to download it) and the full game unlocks four days early. I trust IO to deliver after the last game.

Few tidbits:

- The briefcase is back

- You can now hide in shrubbery

- You can now blend into crowds, I'm assuming like Assassin's Creed

And some screenshots of the F1 Level:

Nice Sean Bean soundalike on the trailer.

I think it is actually Sean Bean. Gives me hope they might’ve upped the voice acting budget this time!

This is such an awesome announcement. I had no idea they were going for a full sequel or that is would be so close. Clearly it’s stuff intended for season 2 wrapped up as a new game, but that’s fine. Gives them a chance to make a clean break and build on the mechanics, AI and systems that could maybe not be simply added on to the last Hitman gam.

The current team at IO had it totally nailed by the time the last episode was out so I’ve very high hopes for this. Who’d have thought after the risible Absolution a few years back and Square Enix suddenly dumping IO after such a brilliant return to form, that the series would be in the strongest place it’s ever been.

Looks like proper weapon upgrading might return from Blood Money (this is such an obvious progression system for a live Hitman game I can’t believe it wasn’t in the last one):

As I'm clearly going to be buying all the DLC I'll almost certainly get the Gold edition, but £80 is pretty bloody pricey. That's £15 each for the DLC (each of which includes one new location), which is quite steep. I'll definitely wait to see if it gets cheaper nearer to release.

Is this one not episodic? I was really gutted to miss out on that aspect of the first - replaying the same level again and again when everyone else is seemed like a brilliant idea. Disappointing if they're moving away from that model.

Yes it worked very well but it didn’t pan out as well commercially. Any subsequent DLC packs after the main game will feel episodic, so you’d be able to recapture the feeling with the post-launch content.

Paid episodic and AAA don't really go together. You could argue Hitman is more of an AA game but it clearly still has a pretty decent budget way above most indie games.

The problem is the drop off from episode to episode. I remember playing Hokkaido a few weeks after it was released and the trophy stats on PS4 indicated less than 10% of people who bought the intro pack bought Hokkaido. Completion rates are always crap when it comes to games but it's better to get $60 up front even if you lose a player by mission 3 than only get $30 for three purchased missions but you're budgeted to produce six.

While the media loved it, maintaining a casual players interest in a single player game across an entire year and extracting money each release is a pretty tall order. It works for narrative driven games like Walking Dead where you want to see what happens next, but less so other genres.

The other day I was thinking 'It'd be great if somehow the missions for the first one were playable in this, shame there's no way that will ever happen'.

BUT I WAS WRONG.

They're all coming as DLC taking advantage of the stuff that's been improved/updated in the new game and free to owners of season 1.

Amazing.
