Pennyworth

Recommended Posts

With Gotham ending, Bruno Heller is doing another pre-Batman show, with Danny Cannon. Pennyworth is, of course, about Alfred. He's a former SAS soldier who forms a security company and goes to work for Thomas Wayne. Set in 60s London. Premium cable network Epix has ordered a 10-episode season.

Huh, Gotham is ending? Wonder what the logo will look like.

Trying to imagine the words 'Pennyworth' in huge embossed text with guns and explosions and CIA badges coming out the wazoo

Well I thought you couldn’t scrape the bottom of the barrel more than the adventures of Superman's granddad. They showed me.

A riveting ten-episode documentary about the life cycle of bats that’s actually a backdoor pilot for the origins of the Batcave.

They've got their villain. Paloma Faith.

I see she has acted before, but I've only seen one thing she was in and I don't remember if she was any good.

Jason Flemyng is in. Lord Harwood, "an upper-class English gentleman who is cultured, urbane, brilliant and supremely sure of himself. However, he also holds a sadistic, cruel nature with a veneer of charm".

Someone got the wrong message from the Teen Titans trailer.

I've only just seen this is a thing and this is exactly what I was thinking.

A swinging sixties spy show could be fun, but the license actually makes me less interested because we'll have to watch them cram in painful foreshadowing and bat imagery at every opportunity and like most of the projects the characters have no choice but to spin their wheels because ether have to end up where we know.

3 episodes out there. I’ve seen the first two. An incredible amount of faux-Cockney wideboy nonsense and suchlike. Which I’m finding enjoyable, but I’m not sure you guys would. Also very sweary.

Don't expect realism either. It’s even gone as far as (not particularly spoilery, apart from a world building sense)

Spoiler

live televised executions at the Tower, complete with sponsors. Hung, drawn and quartered.

This is on Starz and, like everything else on Starz, is OK and not terrible. It's weird a mixture of silly Michael Caine cockney gangster bullshit and a kitchen sink drama.

It isn't boring but I'm not sure that it's good. I haven't seen loads in the way of foreshadowing, rather it's just a bunch of ex-SAS men doing jobs after they leave the Army.

Caught a few episodes of this on my flight back from New York.

I liked what I saw, despite its best efforts to put me off, by being hilariously grimdark and throwing out swears like it has Tourette's.

I like Jack Bannon, he has an amiable quality about him. Baby-faced for sure, but he can certainly handle himself. The Michael Caine voice is obviously intentional, and Bannon has admitted as such, as Caine's version was a jumping off point for him, (and the producers, with regards to some of the plot points in the show).

Some of the best stuff for me, was when Alfred and his ex-army mates are together.

Paloma Faith can fuck right off, mind.

I hated Michael Caine Alfred so this just winds me up.

I keep thinking the guy was going to turn around and say, “I’m Michael Caine, and I’m a nosey neighbour”
