Doom Patrol

Greg Berlanti and DC Universe (DC's upcoming streaming service) are making a live action Doom Patrol series. It's ordered direct-to-series, with 13 episodes. Apparently it also gives Berlanti a new record of 14 shows airing.

Quote

The series Doom Patrol is a re-imagining of the beloved group of outcast Super Heroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol’s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities — but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence — and to protect Earth from what they find. Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them.

Picking up after the events of Titans, Doom Patrol will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with a warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same.

Oh man, I hope they do some of the Gran Morrison stories. Bring on The Sex Men! Say hello to Shadowy Mister Evans!

That would be awesome but sadly its being made by the guys who make the CW shows,  I think Morrison's crazy stories will just go over the heads of most of their target audience.

I haven't watched the first episode yet but this extended trailer is fucking screaming Grant Morrison at me

Not sure why it needs Cyborg mind you. Plenty of real Doom Patrol members they could have used. Hopeing for an appearance by Danny the Street

Cyborg has no place in this, but DC do love to shoe him-in in always everything, even though outside of Teen Titans Go, he is a pretty boring character.

I like him in the comics. He's certainly earned his place in the Justice League over the years and become a very heavy hitter. Doom Patrol though? Nah. Totally out of place. Especially when you have Cliff to provide the "I'm not human anymore" plotlines.

Saw this last night.

Robotman is growing on me, although I thought Fraser's take on Steele was a little too broad. And the 'generous' t'n'a throughout felt a little at odds with Morrison's more progressive take. Which the show is clearly leveraging with it's Mr.Nobody and farting donkeys.

The comic is beloved cos of Morrison's run, isn't it? That's why I'm watching it. So I'm a little unsure about Rita Farr, who seems to be a goodie or baddie depending on what the script needs to happen at any given point.

Liked the revisionism on Larry Trainor's backstory.

Anyway, I'll keep watching to see how they butcher Brotherhood of Dada.

Morrison certainly wrote the greatest Doom Patrol comics, but the recent run by Gerard Way was pretty good - though clearly very influenced by  Morrison, but then they are good friends.  ]

I also have a soft spot for the Silver Age comics too and all their wacky 1950's weirdness.

There have been good Doom Patrol runs, some bad ones and some amazing ones. Like Charliemouse says. The Morrison run is the best but the recent one was also excellent. Even the more basic super hero tales that they used to do with the DP can be fun.

I just watched the first episode and loved it. I hope Rita gets a handle on her powers fairly soon or she's not going to be even slightly effective :) Might be a bit much for the effects budget though.

I was a bit confused at first with Rita saying the chief was a nice guy. He's not a nice guy. He's a manipulative bastard. Glad to see they addressed that fairly quickly :)

Fingers crossed for Danny the Street
