Well done! Rupture does proc off combust and brutality. Both cards are -1 health.... but the tungsten rod cancels the -1 health, so you arent actually losing health, so rupture wont proc!

Thanks! I did have a single Offering to pair with that Rupture, though. I guess +1 Strength is better than no Strength. Good enough to beat the heart at least.

  • 2 weeks later...

Did my first ascension run tonight which had an interesting end. I was at almost full health going towards the Act 3 boss. I could see I could get there without having to fight again, so when the option appeared to upgrade all cards for no more healing it was appealing!

Spoiler

Didn't think that there'd be more after the Act 3 boss. I lasted about 4 turns on the Heart, which was better than I expected!

Well, I was bummed out when I got to the heart on A11 and my Innate killed me one turn before I could kill the heart. But it's not all bad news: on my very next run on A12 I killed the heart with 1 HP left. Something of a crazy run. My max HP was 36 nearly the entire time, but I had five upgraded Apparitions -- six if I used Exhume to pull one out of my exhaust pile -- and managed to keep myself alive long enough, which is kind of surprising since nearly every boss could one shot me with such low HP,  to build my strength up. Probably never going to have another run like it.

I just got the speed run achievement without even trying.

I got immolate from Neow, which destroys most act 1 enemies in 1 or 2 turns. I got a bottle relic and put immolate in it. Then I got Necronomicon, so basically 56 damage to all enemies on turn 1.

Are any of the achievements particularly fun to get? I havent focused on them at all.

This is killing me. I'm on ascension 19 with the The Defect, yet cannot seem to get past 5 with The Silent. Just keep dying, barely reaching the final boss most of the time. Any Silent pros have any tips for me please?

Yeah I got it last week. It’s very good and the first Spirealike to even come close to the source material imo, but after ten hours or so I lost the itch and haven’t been back to it for a few days.

It does some very interesting things with the formula. You defend across three floors, with surviving enemies moving up a floor at the end of the turn. And bad guys attack first each turn, so you really have to think about defence and survivability. To stave off repetition, fights have modifiers attached. And there’s a nice mechanic that lets you bet on yourself, making the fight harder (say, giving enemies thorns, or a fixed amount of armour) in exchange for a bigger reward (gold, maybe, or a card draw).

Stores are much more frequent, and you can reroll the stock once for 50 gold, which I like a lot. And after bosses you get a fixed reward, choosing between an extra energy, card draw or unit space on a certain floor, plus stat bonuses. The card upgrade system is really clever too, as is the class setup — you choose a primary and secondary, mixing up two decks. There’s a lot of smart, creative stuff in there.

But yeah, it hasn’t quite got under my skin in the way I thought it would during the first few hours. I think one of its main problems is that artifacts, the game’s name for relics, are much rarer than in Slay The Spire. You barely have half a dozen of them by the time the final boss goes down. They’re all very strong, yes, but it just means the game has fewer interesting directions for a run to go in. I’ve still got tons to unlock so it’s not fair to write it off just yet but it does all feel a bit samey quite quickly.

I'm with you - I find Silent the hardest class, at least in late game. Scaling poison takes too long and I always struggle to scale shivs much.

I had loads of help when I posted here a few weeks ago and I think I am a little better but I’m still struggling to complete a run! I can get to the third level relatively often but the third I just can’t seem to do enough damage or block enough and a few fights in I’m dead. I like playing as Silent as I love poisoning stuff but on loads of runs I’m getting bigger all cards that actually help that!

I wonder if I should focus on ironclad and staying alive to at least try and get through it? I seem to better playing the mad daily challenges. Feel like that’s good practice!

Ironclad is a good way to learn the game and improve but you can do it with Silent too. She’s still my favourite class after 1000 hours. :D

Could you screenshot some of your losing decks? Can be good to see where you died and what your build looked like to give some tips.

Some very broad advice:

Ironclad - Cycling strength (e.g. Demon Form) or block (e.g. Barricade + Entrench) works well. Corruption + Dead Branch is pretty much an instant win.

Silent - Poison (as many Catalysts as you can get) or Shiv decks work well.

Defect - More options here but lightning or frost based decks work well. Core Surge + Biased Cognition is a great combo.

Watcher - Bouncing between Calm and Wrath works well. Calm to soak damage and then switching to Wrath at the right time for big damage.

General advice - Try to improve your deck on every floor, don't take cards just because they are available (sometimes the best thing to do is not to take a card) and try to get rid of your weak cards (strikes and defends) if you can.

But there are so many combinations that can work, it's difficult to give specific advice. Even with 400+ hours invested I still feel like I'm learning new things.

Man, just had an epic battle against Clock Bastard, playing as The Watcher. He got me down to 3pts while he was still on 170 or something like that, because I mistimed a stance switch with the number of cards left to play before his thing kicked in.

And I still beat the slug! I had two Perseverance+ which I just left building up in my hand, one of which had hit 36pts defence and which saved my bacon.

In the end I fired off my Blasphemy and threw all my attack cards at him, couple of 'Reach Heaven/Through Violence' combos landing that turn helping immensely.

Just got an A17 Heart kill with Ironclad, BOOM! Im so, so close to being able to move on with my life. It was a Dead Branch/Corruption/Fiend Fire/Feel No Pain run, but at the higher ascension levels its still not a guaranteed win. It pretty much is though, when you draw Corruption and Feel No Pain on turn 1 against the Heart :)

Was worried this would be too fiddly to play on an iPhone and yeah, it's not ideal. Could at least have thrown in some UI scaling options to offset the tiny text but nope. Really needs a pinch-to-zoom on the map too. I can coast along well enough because I know the game already but even then some stuff is just really awkward. Using potions especially.

on the iPad I’ve found it’s fine, but I’m missing the shortcuts and the ability to just hammer a button to hit.

on the other hand, three goes, three wins. Which is better than I’ve managed when starting on PC, Xbox or Switch.

Have they never played a game on a phone before?

Or used an iPhone X/XS/11?

It seems generally very good so far though.

I was afraid this would happen. The Switch version isn’t scaled up enough UI-wise as well.

Still getting it tho’.

there is a bigger text option in settings. I just turned it on immediately though, so not sure what difference it makes
