Nightflyers - George RR Martin

New show based on a George RR Martin novella, which was previously adapted as a movie in 1987. Some scientists and a telepath travel on a spaceship, Nightflyer, to the edge of the solar system to try to contact alien life. Things go wrong.

Co-produced by SyFy and Netflix, with Netflix having international rights. GRRM isn't directly involved in the show (apart from appearing in the trailer below), keeping busy on other stuff, but does get credited as Executive Producer. Apparently filmed in Limerick, where I didn't even know they had studios.

I hope he said that ironically!

I'm struggling with this. The biggest problem I have with it is that the fiction presents multiple ways that the characters' perceptions of reality can be altered. On board (and this is all set up from episode 1 so hardly spoilers) they have:

An individual with psychic powers who can not only read minds but cause others to see things that aren't there.

Some kind of simulation device that allows you to experience past memories.

A holographic projection system that can create images indistinguishable from the real thing.

They are also on a mission to meet aliens, who apparently have the same properties that give psychics their powers. So there's no fewer than four ways by which reality can be bent. With so much going on that's false, the show relinquishes a lot of the tension whenever something bad happens.

I am not surprised, it's not that great.  I don't think it really knows what story to tell.  Is it about the Aliens, the Ship or the Crew?  So many good ideas but they shouldn't all be being told at the same time.

What has happened to Sci Fi and when are we going to get a solid show?
