The Division 2

Recommended Posts

It's funny how these live service games seesaw between being 'the game the first one should have been' and then turn into 'totally missing everything I loved about the original'. Their fortunes change so wildly. When D2 came out D superfans like SkillUp were saying it was the perfect looter shooter. Division 1 was considered something of a long-term failure, only getting it 'right' very late in its life.

I agree with @Len - bring back more interesting repeatable game-types like Survival and I'll get back into it. It amazes me that these games focus on re-doing canned story content so much instead of more free-flowing and unpredictable game modes that never get old. People play battle royale games over and over again because every session is exciting and fresh - let's get some more of that feeling into PvPvE loot games.

There are parts of D2 that are like that though - control points at Alert 4, dark zone raids, bounties on Heroic, etc. It's not just replaying story missions in the end game.

Yeah, for $3 you'll get some great solo fun!

I did D1 co-op and D2 solo story wise... after that I've tended towards co-op and/or PvP in the endgame stuff but you can do that solo to a certain extent if you enjoy it too (it's just way harder).

It is absolutely playable fully solo but personally I found it more fun when matchmaking in the missions.

The matchmaking is well integrated. You can start the mission and the game will continue to invite players in the background so you aren't waiting around for people. There's never any chat needed or anything, the missions are pretty straightforward.

The number of enemies scales with more people and it also means you can get a rez if you die which makes it much less frustrating. At higher difficulties, you'll definitely need to matchmake though.

What? Ubisoft are one of the best publishers at continuously providing new content and updates for old games.

Their season passes often fall into the pattern of one good, but short DLC, other lacklustre DLCs, and assorted fluff. You can put Watch Dogs; Assassins Creed: Syndicate; Far Cry 4 and Far Cry 5 into that bracket. Can’t speak to ones I haven’t played, but I’m sure there are others.

If we’re talking free content, some of that is admittedly very good. Far Cry: Arcade was excellent.

Lot of understandably pissed off ultimate edition owners on reddit who starved on a thin gruel of exclusive content in year one and are now seeing the meaty expansions planned for year two.

But we got everything they said we would get!?

You are technically correct (the best kind of correct.) The new specialisations were largely awful, though, so having a leg-up on people who didn’t want to grind for them was rendered moot. Plus, I think some were expecting content like the ‘classified’ missions to be a little more substantial, whereas they were bite-sized. Tbh, I never considered it an appealing package, but I can understand why folk could feel let down.

Completed the first Coney Island mission in the dark and the rain. The map is full of gorgeous neon effects :), but the mission itself isn't very exciting. Hopefully the second one is a bit more interesting considering what it's about.

The Warlords of New York DLC is on the XBox store for £24.99 now.

Who the fuck does marketing for these guys??

Who in the right mind thinks it would be a good idea to so a movie's worth of content of a bunch of guys sitting around a fucking table!?!?!?

14gb download for episode 3 on PC. Looking forward to having a play later tonight.

Does seem kind of weird to release the final year 1 DLC months after the last content drop and then release a massive new expansion 3 weeks later

Episode 3 is essentially a prelude to Warlords of New York though. Presumably the idea is that it'll act as a teaser to get people to buy the DLC.

Plus they need to get it in before end of Ubiosft FY2019   :sherlock:

Been reading up on a lot more detail and an interesting tidbit is the introduction of a Global difficulty setting where you can set the entire open world to one of the higher difficulties like heroic or legendary. They went on to say that at the highest difficulty the AI is designed to never miss a clear headshot. Should make it horrifyingly tense...or just horrifyingly not fun, we'll see.

To be fair that's not really marketing material; it's the long running weekly chat about future content and community stuff.

That's still marketing I'm afraid to say. I get there are people massively invested but the smart play would be to create condensed versions of the videos with key info because most people don't have 2 hours to watch something like that.

I picked this up for $3 and have just unlocked World Levels - is it just me or are there only 2 skills in the entire game worth using as a solo player? The drone which flies about shooting enemies and distracting them from immediately rushing/flanking you and the hive one which automatically revives you when you get put down. Everything else is "yeah, that's pretty cool but compared to these two..."

Ubisofty Shooty Openish World Map games are the only ones which give me ludonarrative dissonance. The story is played so straight and serious and everyone treats my agent like he's the Goodest Ever Guy, but he's just casually and single-handedly gunned down a genocidal number of human beings!

For solo players survivability is really important but when you're playing in a matchmade group, reviving is much easier so you don't need the medical skills as much. You can see what skills other players have in the UI so I tend to  mix it up if everyone has a revive hive.

What you're looking for is synergy with weapon talents. If you pick up an AR with 'deals extra damage to bleeding enemies' use the stinger hive. Obviously you can't use the revive hive at the same time so use the chem launcher which heals you or the repair drone. Likewise, use the flame turret if you have 'extra damage to burning enemies' or seeker mine to 'extra explosive damage'. The'extra damage' can be anywhere between 30% and 50% so it makes a big difference.

Currently high skill power builds seem to be built around the seeker mine which are seriously powerful but a lot of the armour and weapon talents are getting changed for the expansion although there are also some new skills coming and new skill tier system which should make skill builds more interesting

A great price for at least 30hrs of solo play action and you'd also get the endgame loot changes coming in next week's update if it clicks - a great time to jump in.

Kenly College expeditions are back at tomorrow's reset too. Not the best missions but completing the 3 of them (which have previously been time limited) guarantees the Exotic Diamondback rifle.

I use cluster seeker mines because I have about 300% skill haste and 6 additional mines between the 3 mod slots. That gives me ~250000 damage and the cool down is only 13s. When I'm solo'ing missions it means I can just keep chucking them out and focus on the named enemies.

I also rock a repair drone because not dying is better than dying and getting revived. Especially once you get the survivor perk that gives you bonus XP for not dying. The drone is useful because you can make it repair other players and skill proxies. :)
