Don't think I've ever pictured them wearing denim dungarees. I always thought they had these things on

I think they made them denim in Smash Bros a long old while back. Can't remember if that translated to the main games.

Argh that Brooklyn shot with the plumber van. Why do Mario movies insist on explaining the plumbing backstory. It's never ever mentioned in the games, it doesn't matter, it's boring.

What else do they have?

I'm pretty certain it featured in some of the old NES instruction manuals anyway. If you're going to make a 90+ minute film out of Super Mario Brothers you need all the material you can get.

I enjoyed the new trailer significantly less than the first one, although it seems like they’re taking the angle that all Mario’s deaths are cannon because he seems to be an absolutely useless, slapstick, Mr Bean type character which might be an amusing take on the franchise. Generally though it looks pretty bad, which I guess makes sense given the studios previous terrible movies and Nintendo’s general lack of interest in stories as anything beyond set dressing.

Pratt remains a laughably bad bit of casting and if you're feeling less generous to it it does seem to have the hallmarks of any generic modern animated movie. But it looks right and it looks like the team behind it has some love for the franchise given the gags, which always goes a long way for good will towards something.

Would there be a rights issue with Microsoft if they used Rare’s nineties redesign of Donkey Kong? I don’t hate the more classic look they’re going with, but it’s a little jarring. Especially as Cranky is sitting right there! Wait, answered my own question.

I guess I don’t like the choice to mess with it for the sake of it.

Nintendo would own the Donkey Kong design - they've used it as the basis for every DK appearance since Rare came up with it, they will be able to do what they want with the character.

I'd guess the more classic inspired look is pointedly to call back to the original game a bit.

Voices are all wrong and the language in the script is as generic as every other 3D animated Hollywood film this past 15 years or so.

Yep, Pratt as guy voice, woman as Peach voice. The script and gags are so standard they have ACME written on the side. Loads of deflation jokes and "well, THAT happened" shite.

A shame, as the design is very nice (apart from the weirdly tiny-eyed Mario and Luigi - just the sound of 'em makes me queasy).

Looks fine, I guess? Very Illumination and quite generic. I do think Mario was always going to be tricky to adapt, especially as Nintendo isn’t going to let anyone do anything interesting with the characters.

The visuals look good… except for Mario, especially the clothing. I don’t know why it bothers me so much but it looks “off” - it feels they’re trying to consciously make it more realistic and detailed, probably to contrast the visuals with the games, but it feels over-detailed, doesn’t fit with the rest of the cartoony world and stands out compared to everything else. A weird thing to nitpick, I know.

The voices sound iffy, but that's only because we've had 20 years of them being ingrained into our brains. I'm sure once you hear it in full motion rather than snippets it'll be fine.

I'm still on the side of doing this over 90+ minutes of an over the top Allo Allo style "it's a-me a-Maaaaarrrio". Works fine for games but in full conversation, no thanks.

However, it does sound like Pratt isn't putting enough pizzazz into that Wahooooo

I think it looks pretty good! I've done every kids film you can possibly imagine since covid, with every Friday finding a new film to watch as a family.

I've had to sit through utter trash multiple times, and this looks like something to look forward to rather than rely on alcohol to get through.

Also, kids don't give a shit about most of the issues that are being raised here. The film has been made for them.
