I don't see what the big deal is. Mario has looked different in ALL of the 3d games. Why would the movie be any different?

3D renders of him have been fairly consistent since Sunshine. I can't find a decent image of just 3D renders to illustrate that, so this Hodge podge of images I nicked off Reddit will have to do.

I would include 64 in that, but images from that era weren't totally consistent, which is fine as it was still the early days of 3D.

@Alex W.'s suggestion of it looking like a costume pretty much nails it. I'm sure it will look fine in motion; it just looks unnecessarily different.

Recognisable as Mario (obvs), but as pointed out in this comparison it looks off (I don't know why that is marked as potentially sensitive). For me it's the eyes and the shape of the face.

"Can't tell what is off!"

<Goes on to list 5 differences>

God, I hate the design of Mario. The games are good but the character design is just so 'Mickey Mouse' with the white gloves and everything.

I much prefer the SMB sprite where he looks like a reasonable depiction of a sweaty arsed plumber.

It's because of his elbow isn't it? They've strayed a smidgen too far towards what an actual man with cylindrical arms would look like (ie, horrifying).

It's a tiny drop of unnecessary realism that's completely spoiling the rest of him.

I think I have cartoon character face blindness as it just looks like Mario to me.

Eyes are a different size and further apart. His face is a little wider and flatter - presumably to accommodate more expressiveness. And also to blanden him slightly like his skinjob voice actor.

His design also looks slightly off because of the more detailed clothing (the realistic denim texture and the little notch in his glove's wrist).

Which I think is perfectly fine to be honest considering its a big budget animation. They won't want it looking like a cut scene from a Switch.

At least its not Sonic levels of bad. He's just got a fatter head. Best we wait to see it in motion.

I think the problem is that because it has photorealistic textures and it's shot from the chest up, your brain naturally fills out the rest in photorealistic proportions. Once you see it in context with his traditionally curvy bod it'll be fine.

Today is the day gamers. The last four years have been truly difficult, with little to no information but here we are merely hours away from our first true glimpse of the Super Mario movie. Will Nintendo break our hearts again, if so will it be on purpose to appeal to those undeserving of a Mario movie or will it be by accident where they simply got the wrong people involved in this epic project?

Could this actually be a shock in a good way? Finally, they understand us and know what we gamers want in a sincere movie about our closest imaginary friend in times of need? Will Mario finally be cool in the mainstream? and if so is that something we are willing to sacrifice as a community?

The day is upon us my friends. It has all led to this very moment,  I truly believe this time the stars will align with us. See you on the other side. Good luck all.

his right arm looks far too short compared to the international standard Mario.

I watched about a half hour of the 90s Movie in the pub with the sound off and it was better than I remembered. They clearly built a shitload of sets and cars and weapons and costumes and whatnot and it all looked pretty great.
