It seems to me that the later in the movie, the more Mario-like he sounds. Maybe in the final battle he’ll get punched in the neck and they’ll switch over to Charles Martinet.

That's what is totally happening here. The film is about becoming Mario, Chris Pratt is a genius and playing a toned down version. Over the course of the movie his voice will transition, we've only seen the early bits of the movie so far. It's going to be like The Matrix, where the final shot is Mario jumping into the air shouting 'It's a me - Mario' in the mario voice we all know and love. This movie is just one long epilogue.

Beautifully animated, and about as faithful and affectionate as a corporate cash-in is possible to get — but it still doesn’t come close to the experience of actually playing the games.

SCORE: **

once the brothers have left planet Earth, the game dimension has to be repeatedly, cumbersomely and boringly crowbarred into the story itself. And unlike the brilliant Lego Movies, there is a fierce insistence on not being ironic or funny or self-referential about any of this – odd, as screenwriter Matthew Fogel worked on The Lego Movie 2. [...] Even Super Mario superfans might prefer the game.

Illumination and Nintendo set out to deliver a Mario movie that anyone could enjoy, and that anyone with even a passing knowledge of the games could get lost in - they’ve undeniably succeeded on both fronts.

SCORE: 8/10

Reading some of the reviews classified as "Rotten".

With a pixel-thin premise and a plot propelled by a candy-induced sugar rush, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an overstuffed 90 minutes of colorful, inoffensive fun.

Seems alright to me?

Looks like one of those "add an extra star if you're a fan" kind of films.

Also, yes please to more 90 minute movies.

Bearing in mind that the trailer itself features about 4 instances of the film being entirely self-referential, I'm not sure this Empire staffer has read their dictionary end to end.

I'm looking forward to it on a hangover couch day. My bar is low, but I'm just glad that some people on the team have very obviously played the games.

Critics got this wrong because that was a right romp. Exactly what I'd expect from a Mario film and any of them saying the 90s version is better are morons.

Yeah the story is simple and pretty much the bog standard Mario set up I.e. Browsers coming, Mario and co have to save the day, but it was still loads of fun.

It's chocked full of easter eggs & musical stings, plus the visuals and music are both amazing.

If you've spent the last 35 years playing and enjoying Mario games I don't see how you don't get a kick out of this film.

If you ain't a Mario fan and know nothing of the franchise then it's going to be the usual Illumination Studios shite isn't it?

Probably. Mario fandom is doing a lot of lifting but it always was going to, especially with some of the visuals they use in the film. There's still some great jokes in there too though and kids will love it. Both mine loved it and they've got a passing interest in Mario based purely on Mario Kart and Mario Party.

It may not mean much based on other Video Game films but make of this what you will...

I'm a huge Illumination Studios fan so this was always going to be a must see.

The boy and I thought we were being geeky wearing Mario tees but there were others in our 10am showing in FULL COSPLAY as Toad, Bowser and DK.

I really, really enjoyed it (as did my kids).

I gave up trying to spot Easter eggs after about 20 minutes.

It's amazing that they managed to make a fantastic Mario film at the first attempt...

EDIT: The music!! Oh my, the music!! 😍

Booked for Friday with the boy and missus. My 5 year old loved lots of things, but to his credit he is religious about only two of them… Sonic and Mario. My wife would rather go for a nap in the car but I have a feeling that even she is going rm enjoy this. Can’t wait!!

Illumination stuff is great for kids. My 3 year old has loved them for ages, one of the first things he laughed at was the cat opening the fridge gag in The Secret Life of Pets. He loves minions, Gru, and all the characters in Sing. Laughs his head off.

They provide pretty, loud, funny, and inoffensive entertainment. Like a dumb action flick for kids.

My 5yo is funny with loud noises but desperate to go and see this. How loud is this - plenty of loud explosions etc?

Many cinemas do sensory friendly screenings (lower volume, lights not completely off etc), usually once a week on weekends.  Might be worth looking up when these might be.

Nearly watched it in 3D but i wanted to see the earlier showing so didn't bother. I had seen the trailer in 3D which did look pretty nice though.

I thought it was a fairly enjoyable movie. The story was a little weak and I have to be honest, up until the

Spoiler

jungle/dk section i wasn't enjoying it as much as I thought.

After that, i quite enjoyed the rest of the movie. The music was fantastic and a lot of the action set pieces were good too.

I just wish the jokes were funnier - a few were a bit lame. I didn't really feel the beginning of the movie was very Nintendo like and felt more like watching any other illumination movie. I mean, sure it's a kids movie but still.

The 90 minutes was about right for the runtime IMO - overall i did enjoy it but i can see why some people wouldn't enjoy it as much.

I think Sonic was a better movie but that's not to say i didn't find joy in this.

Look forward to the sequel or whatever, hopefully they can improve on any issues! I'd give it a 7/10.
