I never played SD3 more than a few hours and SoM has been so long I can't really remember anything about it. FF XII too, it's been on my wish list for ages but I never get around to buying it. Cuphead is aesthetically stunning but after 2 minutes it can fuck off. I don't have much free time and found it nothing but frustrating. I assume I'm stuck with it? Carrion is amazing. Completed it. I bought it earlier in the year and started it, but was too tied up with a couple of other games to continue - but it’s one I plan to get to soon. The battle system is pure Paper Mario 2, and much better than the Paper Mario we got on the Switch this year. Visually it’s no where near as charming as Paper Mario of course, as it’s filled with ugly-looking insects and characters you don’t recognise. It’s a shame they didn’t theme it around something a little prettier and more colourful. But as you say, the reviews are top notch, so I am looking forward to getting stuck in. Dr Nookie Posted December 27, 2020 Share Posted December 27, 2020 I just bought Hypercharge Unboxed as I was after a multiplayer shooter that was child friendly. On the plus side the kids love it. We can play 3 or 4 split screen and the maps are all around a house and a toy shop - novel and fun. On the down side, the maps are too small, it takes just a little too long to load each map, there’s no environmental interaction at all other than pick ups so you can shoot hell out of a window or something to no effect and well, it just feels a bit cheap. DukeOfEarlsfield Posted December 27, 2020 Share Posted December 27, 2020 Took a punt on Active Soccer 2019 for £3.59. After a few plays I’m quietly impressed. It feels good, feels right. A good mix of simple controls with a high degree of depth. There’s plenty of options, like auto-dribble, for novices like me and an unfussy, optional tutorial. There’s tons of different tournaments, cups and a career mode with a tactics and name editor. On the downside, the menus and presentation are incredibly basic and clunky. Plus it’s a little buggy, although not in the match from my experience. Sadly, the battle system has none of the depth of the EO series, swapping interesting systems and mechanics for an overload of stats. It’s all so flat and dull. And exploring a sewer isn’t as magical as exploring an ancient tree of life. I’m going to persevere with it because I may as well, I literally haven’t got anything better to do, but I’ve also dug out my 3DS and put in on charge for another go at EO5. It's a different type of dungeon crawler (hearkening back to Dungeon Master's pseudo-realtime approach), but I've seen a lot of praise for Vaporum, in case that might scratch the dungeon crawling itch for you. (alternatively, aside from the EO games on 3DS, there's always Persona Q 1&2, Shin Megami Tensei IV and Soul Hackers, if you've not played any of those previously. Picked this up last night for about a fiver and I was pleasantly surprised! Not the aesthetic I normally go for (which tends to be Japanese, cute, and colourful), and the fighting is real-time too, which again, isn’t usually my bag, but it seems very well made and the environment is nice to explore. They are defintely playable (and fully featured - I have them all on Switch, as well as all the PC big box originals) but the screen size makes handheld play a little compromised, especially on the lite. Either the interface is too small, or they make up for that but then it's too big and clutters up the screen.
