If you wanted something a bit more off-beat, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE is brilliant and ridiculous.

Good man. I knew I’d played at least one more genuinely superb JRPG this year but the name was evading me.

Final Fantasy XII and Seiken Densetsu 3 (original) are very strong too but maybe a little obvious for someone into the genre.

Collection of Mana is a good suggestion. I never played SD3 more than a few hours and SoM has been so long I can't really remember anything about it.

FF XII too, it's been on my wish list for ages but I never get around to buying it. Maybe now is the time...

I’ve literally just bought FFXII after waiting for ages and then read this post. It’s a sign. Get it done.

I guess then I have to. I actually bought the game at launch, played it for a few hours but really wasn't in the right mood for it back then. Time to head back to Ivalice!

Oh yeah, FFXII is an easy answer. It's superb. On sale for about £15 or something, too.

I've bought Wulverblade

Flashback

Carrion.

Cuphead

Flashback really is frustrating and dated.

Cuphead is aesthetically stunning but after 2 minutes it can fuck off. I don't have much free time and found it nothing but frustrating. I assume I'm stuck with it?

Carrion is amazing. Completed it.

About to play Wulverblade.

Bug fables anyone? Tempted by it as all the reviews harp on about it being great and a spiritual successor to paper Mario TYD. Not much chatter on here about it though.

I bought it earlier in the year and started it, but was too tied up with a couple of other games to continue - but it’s one I plan to get to soon. The battle system is pure Paper Mario 2, and much better than the Paper Mario we got on the Switch this year. Visually it’s no where near as charming as Paper Mario of course, as it’s filled with ugly-looking insects and characters you don’t recognise. It’s a shame they didn’t theme it around something a little prettier and more colourful. But as you say, the reviews are top notch, so I am looking forward to getting stuck in.

I just bought Hypercharge Unboxed as I was after a multiplayer shooter that was child friendly.
On the plus side the kids love it. We can play 3 or 4 split screen and the maps are all around a house and a toy shop - novel and fun.
On the down side, the maps are too small, it takes just a little too long to load each map, there’s no environmental interaction at all other than pick ups so you can shoot hell out of a window or something to no effect and well, it just feels a bit cheap.
So my contribution to this thread is if was a fiver, get involved, for 20 sovs I’d steer clear.

Took a punt on Active Soccer 2019 for £3.59.

After a few plays I’m quietly impressed. It feels good, feels right. A good mix of simple controls with a high degree of depth. There’s plenty of options, like auto-dribble, for novices like me and an unfussy, optional tutorial. There’s tons of different tournaments, cups and a career mode with a tactics and name editor.

On the downside, the menus and presentation are incredibly basic and clunky. Plus it’s a little buggy, although not in the match from my experience.

It’s early days but for that price I think it’s well worth a try for anyone wanting an arcade football game with depth.

Also, I’ve finally gotten frustrated with the lack of an Etrian Odyssey successor on the Switch so I’ve bought Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk in an attempt to scratch that dungeon crawling itch and fill up the long, long days of lockdown 3.0.

Sadly, the battle system has none of the depth of the EO series, swapping interesting systems and mechanics for an overload of stats. It’s all so flat and dull. And exploring a sewer isn’t as magical as exploring an ancient tree of life.

I’m going to persevere with it because I may as well, I literally haven’t got anything better to do, but I’ve also dug out my 3DS and put in on charge for another go at EO5.

Thanks for the impressions! I had an eye on this but I think I’ll steer clear (I already have enough to play tbh).

Are there really no others worth looking at on Switch? What’s Mary Skelter 2 like?

It's a different type of dungeon crawler (hearkening back to Dungeon Master's pseudo-realtime approach), but I've seen a lot of praise for Vaporum, in case that might scratch the dungeon crawling itch for you.

(alternatively, aside from the EO games on 3DS, there's always Persona Q 1&2, Shin Megami Tensei IV and Soul Hackers, if you've not played any of those previously. A damned good handheld for the genre, particularly when you add in DS compatibility)

Yeah, I'm very much looking forward to that. Though I should really finish SMT IV first!

Incidentally, of the games I mentioned above, Persona Q 1 & 2, plus Soul Hackers are on sale on the eshop for sub-£10 at the moment, and all are variations on a theme of great.* Should probably flag up that Soul Hackers is pretty old school (being, as it is, a remake of a Saturn game), but for me that's half the appeal.

*well, I've not played Q 2 yet, but I've heard good things

Picked this up last night for about a fiver and I was pleasantly surprised! Not the aesthetic I normally go for (which tends to be Japanese, cute, and colourful), and the fighting is real-time too, which again, isn’t usually my bag, but it seems very well made and the environment is nice to explore. Not sure how long I’ll last, but I’m sure I’ll get my money’s worth.

Has anyone played the ports of Baldur's Gate/2 or Planescape Torment/Icewind Dale on Switch?

They are in the sale but reviews suggest they can be a bit clunky...

They are defintely playable (and fully featured - I have them all on Switch, as well as all the PC big box originals) but the screen size makes handheld play a little compromised, especially on the lite. Having said that, if you told me 20 years ago that I could play Baldurs Gate on a handheld I wouldn't have believed you....

It all works well enough, but I also have Pillar's of Eternity and Divinity: Original Sin II installed so it tends to sit in my nostalgia pile with the PS1 Final Fantasy games.

How is Pillars these days? Heard it was riddled with issues on release and the devs weren't exactly forthcoming with fixes.

I find most things I've played which are ports of heavily pc-centric games like that really are a bit shit on the handheld screen. Either the interface is too small, or they make up for that but then it's too big and clutters up the screen. Civ 6 is just too fiddly for example.

Would you recommend them to someone who plays docked almost 100% of the time?

I want to play Soul Hackers but nothing coming up on search. Is this in another region?
